‘Thalaiva’ takes the poll plunge

Ending nearly two decades of speculation over his political fate, superstar Rajinikanth on Sunday announced the launch of a party, just in time to contest the next Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.”I am surely coming to politics. In the next Assembly election, I will launch a political party and contest from all 234 seats,” he said amid thunderous applause by fans, who have been waiting for this day for over two decades now. He promised people that he would usher in an era of secular and “spiritual” politics.Tamil Nadu politics seems to have taken an interesting turn. Last month, actor Kamal Haasan announced his political plunge after the death of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa.Significantly, the actor’s announcement came in the wake of both the ruling AIADMK and DMK suffering shocking defeat in the bypoll to Jayalalithaa’s RK Nagar Assembly seat. The buzz over Rajinikanth’s political entry has been doing rounds since 1996, when he backed DMK-Tamil Manila Congress alliance to unseat late Jayalalithaa from power. The next state polls are due in May 2021, if the ruling AIADMK government survives its full five-year term.Rajini said he would not contest the Local Body polls, to be held next year, since he has little time for preparations. He, however, said that he would take a call on the Lok Sabha polls, which are due in 2019 at the time of elections.Rajinikanth also urged his fans to focus on expanding their associations to every nook and corner of the state, enrolling all people, including youths and women in large numbers, until the launch of the party.”I will start a political party before the state Assembly elections. Till then, I request fans to not speak about politics or speak ill of any political party,” he said.He added: “I don’t want cadres. I want saviours who will not work for their own benefit but question the wrongdoings. I will be a representative who will watch over this.” He said his party would seek the people’s support based on promises made to them. “If we are not able to fulfill the promises, we will resign from the government in three years,” he assured.Stating that he has decided to take the political plunge considering the degeneration of politics in the state, the 68-year-old actor said the developments in the last one year have made the people hang their heads in shame. “Politics has become very tainted. Democracy has become battered. The political climate in Tamil Nadu has made us hang our heads in shame. If I don’t act now, I will feel guilty. I want to change the entire political system. We need politics devoid of caste and religion. We need spiritual politics,” he said.Stating that what he intended to do was not an easy task, Rajinikanth said: “I know it is like diving in the ocean to find a pearl. I am confident that I will have god’s blessings and support of the people.”Accusing the state political parties of looting the people, the actor said: “Earlier, kings looted the country and the people. Now in the name of democracy, politicians coming to power are looting their own people. It is time for a change.”

All ears for Rajinikanth’s announcement

All eyes are set on Rajinikanth for the announcement he is set to make on Sunday declaring whether or not he would take a political plunge. Many of his fans believe that the actor has taken a decision, after decades of waiting, to finally enter the world of politics.Rajinikanth, who commands a huge fan base across the country, has been hinting for quite some time that he may join politics, but stopped short of announcing it. Rajini, while addressing his fans on Tuesday, said that he would announce his final decision on politics on December 31.His fans and well-wishers see a huge opportunity for the 67-year-old actor to fill the political vacuum created by the death of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa and ailing DMK president M Karunanidhi. “There is no better time to enter politics than now. No leader in the state can match the charisma and support enjoyed by our thalaivar (leader). Without any further delay, he should launch his own party,” said an office bearer of All India Rajinikanth Fans Association from Coimbatore. He said that they have made all the arrangements for welcoming the superstar’s announcement on Sunday by bursting crackers.AXW Douglas, Tuticorin district secretary of the fans association said that he has no expectation of him announcing a political plunge. “After his speech in the first day of the meet, he has been asking the fans to take care of the family first. He also stressed on the patience and to bide one’s time. We don’t know what is in his mind,” he said, adding that the actor still enjoys the biggest fan following among the Tamil actors.Veteran film producer and story writer Kalaignanam who introduced Rajinikanth as here in the 1978 movie Bairavi told a Tamil news channel that the actor would announce his political entry on December 31 in front of his fans.”He will launch his own political party. Earlier when he made up his mind on entering politics, several obstacles were created to prevent his entry. Now he has taken a firm decision to enter politics and he will not go back on it,” he said. The success of film personalities starting from DMK chief M Karunanidhi to AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran and her successor J Jayalalithaa in the politics has prompted several actors to nurture political ambitions.Rajinikanth’s contemporary Kamal Haasan has announced his political entry last month. “Both the actors – Kamal and Rajini – are aspiring to fill up the political vacuum. But they had failed to take into account that MGR and Jayalalithaa did not come to power by making a sudden political entry,” said writer and political commentator Prof Arunan. MGR was in politics since the 1950s and had parallel film and political career before floating his own party in 1972 after he was expelled from the DMK, he said, adding that while Jayalalithaa was brought to politics by MGR in the 1980s and was nominated to Rajya Sabha and then made party’s propaganda secretary. “After MGR’s death, Jayalalithaa claimed his political legacy and his party AIADMK to come to power in 1991,” he said, adding that it would not be easy to launch a new political party and aspiring to come to power in the ensuing elections.

Post oath, TTV Dhinakaran rails against AIADMK

Sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran, who won the RK Nagar Assembly bypoll as an independent candidate, on Friday warned that the fate of the AIADMK government will be sealed in the budget session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly in two to three months. After taking oath as a member of the Assembly before Tamil Nadu Speaker P Dhanapal, Dhinakaran said the Madras High Court verdict in the case against disqualification of 18 MLAs supporting him would be out by January-end and a trial of strength would be held in February or March.Hitting out at Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy CM O Panneerselvam and some other Ministers, Dhinakaran, who was flanked by the disqualified MLAs, said that five-six “self serving” people who had committed “betrayal” were now ruling the roost with support from “north”, an apparent reference to BJP.Meanwhile, Palaniswami responded and said that some people were making false charges against the AIADMK due to political vendetta. “AIADMK party will remain unaffected even if a thousand Dhinakarans stood against it,” he said. Panneerselvam dismissed Dhinakaran’s claims and said that he would not reply to those speaking from the dream world.

Won’t align with ‘communal’ BJP, says Tamil Nadu minister

Days after losing late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s RK Nagar Assembly seat to their arch-rival TTV Dhinakaran, a senior AIADMK leader and Tamil Nadu minister, Sellur K Raju, on Thursday asserted that his party would never align with the “communal” BJP.Raju’s comments come in the wake of political observers crediting Dhinakaran’s victory to the AIADMK’s increasing proximity to the BJP since after Jayalalithaa’s death last year.”After Amma’s death, we continued our amicable relationship with the BJP government at the Centre. But the Centre’s policies like GST earned the wrath of the people. During the by-election campaign, Dhinakaran criticised the BJP government and it helped him get votes of minority Muslims who constitute 30 percent of the voters in RK Nagar. Hence, he won the bypoll,” Raju said while addressing a meeting of his party’s office bearers in Madurai.Raju, considered to be a close Dhinakaran aide, claimed that Jayalalithaa had told party leaders that she had made the mistake of joining an alliance with the BJP once, and that she would never want to repeat it. “Amma was very clear on not joining an alliance with communal forces. We will not deviate from her path. We will not align with communal forces again,” he said.Political observers felt that Dhinakaran, the nephew of jailed AIADMK leader VK Sasikala, was targeted by the Centre after his fallout with the ruling AIADMK. “He was arrested and imprisoned in Tihar for allegedly attempting to bride an unnamed Election Commission official. It was followed by IT raids. All these got him the sympathy of the party cadres, even as the AIADMK was getting closer with the BJP,” said Prof Ramu Manivannan, HoD, Political Science at University of MadrasMeanwhile, Tamil Nadu Assembly session will begin on January 8; the first time the Assembly meets after the disqualification of the 18 MLAs owing allegiance to Dhinakaran who will be sworn in by Speaker P Dhanapal on Friday.

Declare missing fishermen as dead: Fr Churchill

Representatives of fishermen in Kanyakumari and families of missing fishermen have urged the Central team, deputed by the Union Home Ministry to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Ockhi, to declare 237 missing fishermen as ‘dead’ if they fail to return by December 31. This will enable the fishermen’s families to claim compensation and relief. After their hopes of seeing the breadwinners during Christmas were dashed, the families are now conducting Holy Mass in memory of the missing fishermen as there was no information on them since the devastating cyclone hit on November 30.Of the 237 missing fishermen feared dead, 170 are from eight fishing villages of Kanyakumari, while 67 are from other districts and states. “Most of these fishermen could have been rescued if the Indian Coast Guard and Navy commenced the rescue operation immediately after the cyclone passed the district on November 30. But our distress call was ignored,” alleges Fr Churchill, general secretary of South Asian Fishermen Fraternity, who submitted a memorandum to the centre’s team on Thursday.“There is a very remote chance of survival of the missing fishermen. Hence they should be declared dead on December 31 as it will enable the families to get the compensation of Rs 20 lakh and a government job,” he said. He demanded that the Central team take steps to declare Kanyakumari district as a disaster-affected district.State Relief Commissioner K Satyagopal said the government hoping that some more fishermen would return to the shore before New Year.

Sibling rivalry: MK Alagir blames MK Stalin for the RK Nagar defeat

After the DMK’s humiliating loss in the RK Nagar Assembly seat bypoll, party chief M Karunanidhi’s elder son and former union minister MK Alagir blamed his younger sibling MK Stalin’s for the loss saying that he did not do enough field work.Alagiri who was expelled from the party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 for anti-party activities said leave alone the RK Nagar bypoll, the party would not win any election as long as Stalin leads the party. His comments have come ahead of the party’s high-level executive committee meeting to be held here on Friday.Rejecting the Stalin’s statement blaming money power for the election defeat, Alagiri, in an interview to a Tamil magazine, said, “There is a strong resentment against both the ruling party and the main opposition party in RK Nagar. Otherwise, how come an independent candidate Dhinakaran, placed 33rd on the ballot box list, got a resounding victory?””See, you should get down to the ground and do fieldwork. Merely going around in a jeep cannot fetch you votes,” Alagiri said, recalling how his dad Karunanidhi used to call him several times in a day to keep a tab of bypoll campaigning works when he used to oversee such elections.Alagiri, the Madurai-based strongman, had helped the DMK win successive by-elections in 2006-11 when his party was in power in the state. He was then accused by opposition parties of masterminding money distribution to voters in the Thirumangalam Assembly bypoll which was infamously called as “Thirumangalam formula”.The ruling AIADMK latched onto Alagiri’s comments to take potshots at Stalin. “Alagiri has said DMK cannot win (under Stalin’s leadership)… His (Stalin’s) own brother has said so,” senior AIADMK leader and Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said, without elaborating. After the Alagiri’s expulsion in 2014, Stalin was appointed as party’s working president in January this year.POWER PLAYAlagiri and Stalin had been involved in a long-running feud in the DMK’s first family with both contending to be their father’s political heir. A former Union minister, Alagiri had once famously asked if the DMK was a ‘mutt’ where a senior pontiff could appoint his successor, indicating that he was always in the reckoning.

Will Rajinikanth enter politics? Thalaiva to make announcement on December 31st

Amid speculations over his entry into politics, superstar Rajinikanth on Tuesday said that that he would make the announcement on the issue on December 31.The 67-year-old, while speaking on the Day 1 of the ‘Fan Fest’, said that he was not saying that he would announce his political entry on December 31st, but his decision on politics.Rajinikanth’s comments came after National Award winning actor Kamal Haasan announced last month about his decision to enter politics and float his own party after touring the state. Haasan took to Twitter to blast the ruling AIADMK government after the demise of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa last year.Addressing his fans, Thalaiva said that the media seems to be more interested in his political entry than the people, he said that he was in the politics since 1996, referring to his support to DMK-Tamil Maanila Congress to unseat AIADMK government led by the then chief minister J Jayalalithaa in the state polls.”I know the pros and cons of the politics. That’s why I am hesitating. Otherwise I would have been already in it,” he said.Recalling his statement that ‘let us see when the war comes,’ he asked did war means election? “If it is war, you have to win it. To emerge victorious in the war, one not only require courage but also strategy. I will tell my decision on politics on December 31,” he said.During his meeting with fans in May earlier this year, the actor triggered speculation on his political entry with his “the system is rotten in Tamil Nadu” comment. “We have good leaders but the system is rotten. This system needs to be changed and a change has to be brought in the minds of people, then only will the country flourish. Let us all work together to bring about a change,” he had said.On the criticism that he is an outsider and not a Tamilian, Rajinikanth had said: “I lived in Karnataka for 23 years and Tamil Nadu for 43 years. Although I came as a Marathi from Karnataka, you people nurtured me, made me true Tamilian. I am a pure Tamil. My forefathers were from Krishnagiri district.” He added that if some in Tamil Nadu were to ask him to leave the state, he would rather go to the Himalayas than settle down in any other state.Following the death of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa and ailing DMK chief M Karunanidhi, there is more pressure from his fans to take a political plunge considering the political vacuum.Tamil Nadu has a history of film personalities succeeding in politics. The film script writer – DMK founder CN Annadurai and his successor M Karunanidhi – went to become chief ministers while matinee idols – AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, and his successor J Jayalalithaa – also occupied the CM chair.

Ockhi-hit Tamil Nadu villages to give Xmas a miss

Fishing villages of Thoothoor in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari are giving this Christmas a miss as over 305 fishermen and their boats are still missing after being hit by Ockhi cyclone on November 30.”There won’t be any celebration of Christmas. We are going to hold prayers on Sunday night in the memory of those missing fishermen. Other than church activities, there will not be any function or celebration outside,” Fr Bebinson, parish priest of St Thomas Forane Church, Thoothoor.Of the 305 missing fishermen, 157 are from eight fishing villages in Thoothoor region while 98 are from other districts of Tamil Nadu and about 50 are from Assam, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. As of now, only seven dead bodies of Kanyakumari fishermen were recovered.Fishermen from Thoothoor region are known for deep-sea fishing, venturing up to 1600 nautical miles, staying in the sea for 30-40 days. The families of missing fishermen are hoping that they would return before the Christmas but the hope is fading with each passing day, said Fr Bebinson. In last few days, as many as 60 fishermen hit by the cyclone were rescued by local fishermen who went on a search mission and brought to shore along with their damaged boats, he said, adding that fishermen set out in 200 boats in search of their missing brethren in the sea. “We will wait until this month end for the missing fishermen to return. After which we will hold memorial service for them,” he said. The case of migrant workers from Andhra Pradesh, Assam and West Bengal who go along with the fishermen in the deep sea fishing vessels as helpers are tragic. The migrant works who were basically working in the hotels started venturing along with fishermen as they got good pay, said Fr Churchill, general secretary of South Asian Fishermen Fraternity.”Sadly, there is no exact number of migrant workers went into the sea. We compiled the missing fishermen list from the survivor’s account. In some boats, none of them survived so we don’t know how many migrant workers were there in it,” he said.Fr Churchill said the fishermen suffered worst in the cyclone Ockhi than 2004 tsunami. “In five minutes, everything was over in tsunami whereas the fishermen caught in the cyclone were stranded and faced a traumatic death after swimming endlessly with the hope of being rescued,” he said.

A Raja, Kanimozhi receive grand welcome at home

Two days after the CBI special court in New Delhi acquitted all accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, a grand reception was given to DMK leaders – former Telecom Minister A Raja and to Rajya Sabha MP and youngest child of party chief M Karunanidhi, Kanimozhi, when they arrived at the airport on Saturday.DMK working president MK Stalin, along with senior party leaders received Raja and Kanimozhi, presenting shawls at the airport where the passengers faced a hard time with a large number of party cadres gathered to greet their leaders, affecting the movement of vehicles. The highlight of the grand reception was the hug initiated by Kanimozhi and reciprocated by Stalin. Stalin then hugged Raja too.Wading through the crowd, Kanimozhi and Raja assembled at a designated place and received shawls presented by the party cadre. Folk artists of varied disciplines performed at the airport as part of the welcome party. From the airport, Raja and Kanimozhi left to Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence where they were given another round of reception by the cadres. When Kanimozhi met her father Karunanidhi, who is recovering from a prolonged illness, he pinched her cheeks and planted a kiss. Raja, who fell at the DMK patriarch’s feet and presented him a shawl, told the leader that they were all acquitted.”My father was very happy to see me and welcome me after the verdict,” Kanimozhi told reporters after her homecoming. When asked about her political plans, she said that she was very happy with the present role as women wing’s head. “Now I need not go to court and sit for the hearing. I have more time to work for the party’s growth,” she said, amid the rumours of her being given a prime role in the party.Raja said that he had a very emotional meeting with party chief Karunanidhi. “He was very happy to hear when I told him that all were acquitted in the 2G case,” he said.In the DMK patriarch’s family, Stalin has succeeded in side-lining and expelling his elder brother Alagiri, who was controlling the southern districts when Karunanidhi was active. Kanimozhi maintained a low profile with the 2G case but her acquittal would change equations within the party and its first family.

Madras High Court notice to Tamil Nadu government

Madras high court on Friday issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government and the Chennai Corporation after admitting the plea filed by S Amrutha, who claims to be the biological daughter of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and sought permission to exhume her mother’s body .Hearing the petition on Friday, Justice S Vidyanathan also impleaded Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepak and Deepa as party respondents to the petition. The judge wanted the authorities to file their replies by January 5.The judge also asked Amrutha as to why she did not claim Sobhan Babu as her father in the petition. He also wanted to know whether Apollo Hospitals, where late Jayalalithaa was hospitalised, has kept any of her blood samples in its possession. When Amrutha’s counsel moved the high court on Thursday, Advocate General Vijay Narayan opposed her petition strongly saying that without any authority, her claim was not maintainable and was a publicity stunt.Pointing out that several people were claiming that they were legal heirs of Jayalalithaa, the judge had said that to put a quietus to the issue, a DNA test may be ordered. If the claim comes out to be false, the petitioner has to face the consequences, the judge added.Earlier in November, the Supreme Court had refused to hear a similar petition filed by her. In her petition, Amrutha had said that she knew Jayalalithaa as her aunt and it was only in March, three months after Jayalalithaa’s demise that it was revealed to her that she was, in fact, Jayalalithaa’s daughter.

The Justice Arumughasamy Commission that is probing the circumstances leading to the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, on Friday summoned her aide VK Sasikala, Apollo Hospital’s Chairman Pratap Reddy and executive vice chairperson Preetha Reddy two days after a video of the late AIADMK chief sitting in the hospital bed sipping tea was released to the media. The commission has given a 15-day period for Sasikala, who is serving a four-year imprisonment in a Bengaluru prison in a corruption case, to submit her response within 15 days while the top executives of the Apollo hospitals were asked to reply within 10 days.Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospital on September 22 last year and passed away on December 5, 2016. Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, who rebelled against the Sasikala-led AIADMK, raised doubts over the circumstances leading to Jayalaltihaa’s hospitalisation and alleged that none of the AIADMK leaders and ministers including him were allowed to see her during the 75-day long stay in the hospital. After Panneerselvam merged his faction with the ruling AIADMK, the Edappadi K Palanisami government constituted an one-man commission headed by retired judge Arumughasamy. The commission, whose three months term was extended by another six months on Friday, began its hearing on November 22. Several people, including IAS officials, doctors, Jayalalithaa’s niece J Deepa and nephew J Deepak and Madurai- based DMK functionary P Saravanan have deposed before it so far.

2G spectrum case verdict helps boost morale of resurgent DMK in Tamil Nadu

For the resurgent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the acquittal of its leaders A Raja and Kanimozhi by the CBI special court in Delhi in the 2G spectrum allocation scam cases is a morale-boosting victory for the party to get rid of the “corruption” tag which haunted it in three successive elections since 2011.The CBI court’s verdict has come at a favourable time for the DMK when the opposition parties in the Tamil Nadu are consolidating towards it and the ruling AIADMK is in shambles following the demise of Jayalalithaa last year. Free from corruption stain, the DMK under the leadership of its working president MK Stalin would launch an effective offensive against AIADMK government which is reduced to a minority government after the disqualification of its 18 rebel MLAs owing allegiance to VK Sasikala-TTV Dinakaran faction. Once the Madras High Court decides on the petitions filed by the disqualified MLAs, the Edappadi K Palaniswami government would be asked to prove its majority on the floor of the House. The ruling AIADMK’s proximity with the BJP has helped the DMK to rally opposition parties together. Apart from its allies Congress, IUML and MMK, DMK has got the support of MDMK, CPI (M), CPI and VCK in the RK Nagar bypoll. A senior DMK leader said that there is a good possibility of this grouping emerging as an electoral alliance for the subsequent polls. “Palaniswami government will certainly fail the floor test and the assembly election may come at any time next year. We will win the election whenever it is held,” he said. Also read2G scam verdict: Court pulls up then SG for dithering in caseWhen asked about the prospects of DMK joining hands with BJP, the DMK leader dismissed it saying, “There is no chance of joining hands with BJP. We are very clear on it.” He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling on party chief Karunanidhi last month triggered talks of such an alliance. “This verdict is a moral victory for the DMK. It will improve the prospects of the DMK. DMK will be a much sought after ally and more parties will join its alliance,” political commentator Gnani Sankaran told DNA. On the prospects of DMK ditching Congress and joining BJP alliance, he said that the saffron party would be more interested to woo the DMK whose prospect is bright in the election. “You cannot rule out an alliance between BJP and DMK,” he said. Also read2G scam verdict: DMK and allies welcome verdict, AIADMK favours appeal in caseThe corruption had become a major political plank for opposition parties, except for AIADMK and DMK, in the 2016 assembly election with both the major Dravidian parties caught in the corruption charges. After defeating DMK in the state assembly in 2011 and Lok Sabha polls in 2014 using the 2G scam, late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa found herself targeted by opposition parties on corruption charges after her conviction and subsequent acquittal in the disproportionate assets case in 2014-15. After Jayalalithaa’s death last year, the Supreme Court in February this year upheld the conviction in the assets case and jailed her close aide VK Sasikala and two others.

RK Nagar campaign ends dirty

The campaigning for the contentious RK Nagar Assembly seat, vacated by late Tamil Nadu chief J Jayalalithaa, came to an end on Tuesday evening, amid allegations of free-flowing money and freebies to voters. The bypolls are scheduled to be held on December 21.Even as there are 59 candidates in the fray for the crucial bypoll, the major front-runners are AIADMK’s E Madhusudhanan, DMK’s N Marudhu Ganesh and sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dinakaran, who is contesting as an independent candidate. To ensure a smooth election, the Election Commission of India has deployed nine observers, the highest ever for an election in one Assembly constituency. However, despite heightened security and monitoring, allegations of distribution of money and freebies for voters were flung back and forth. On Sunday, DMK working president MK Stalin wrote to the ECI, alleging that the ruling AIADMK distributed over Rs 100 crore to the voters and asked the commission to ensure free and fair election. The AIADMK on its part accused the DMK of bribing voters and complained against Dinakaran that he was distributing free pressure cookers — his symbol — to the voters. The flying squads have also seized around Rs 30 lakh from several people during the campaign. The police have arrested as many as 20 persons in connection to the money distribution to voters.Although the poll was first scheduled to be held in April this year, it was cancelled due to complaints of large-scale voter bribing by a candidate. The crucial bypoll is considered to be a litmus test for the ruling AIADMK, which underwent a split and then a patch-up within the last year. The victory in the bypoll would help the 11-month-old Edappadi K Palaniswami government to claim Jayalalithaa’s political legacy.

Is sexual violence due to moral curbs, asks Madras High Court

Madras High Court has asked the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government to explore the possibility of providing gadgets to women to prevent sexual violence which is on the rise even after stringent laws were brought in after the Nirbhaya incident.Seeking urgent measures to stop crime against women and girls, Justice N Kirubakaran has raised several queries to be answered by the Union and the state governments as well as the National Commission for Women (NCW).”Sexual assault is a violation of privacy, dignity, and honour causing a permanent scar and continuous agony in the mind of the victim,” Justice Kirubakaran said while dismissing a bail plea of a duo accused in the rape-and-murder of a 60-year-old woman. He involved the Centre and NCW in the case and directed them to file response to his queries. He has asked whether the spurt in sexual violence against women is a result of a fall in sex ratio or due to ‘sex starvation’ among Indian men in view of various cultural and moral curbs. He has also asked whether alcoholism has any role to play in this.Noting that sexual assaults on women continued unabated despite stringent laws brought in after the December 16 Delhi gangrape incident, he said the offences have to be analysed and examined from psychological and sociological angles. The judge sought the response of the governments on his queries by January 10, 2018.He also asked if the rise in sex crimes was due to easy accessibility of pornographic content through internet. The judge said culprits in sexual violence could neither be termed as ‘human beings’ nor as ‘animals’ as even animals were noble in their own way.SEEKING ANSWERSMadras HC asked the Centre, state, and NCW to cite reasons behind rise in crime against women. Response to be submitted by January 10, 2018.

Sankar murder: Six sentenced to death in honour killing case, Kausalya welcomes verdict

In a sensational case of honour killing, Tamil Nadu’s Tirupur Principal District and Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced six persons to double death penalty for the daylight murder of 23-year-old dalit V Sankar who had married an upper caste woman. The murder took place in a busy marketplace and was caught on CCTV cameras. Of the 11 accused, six including girl’s father Chinnasamy received death penalty, one person was awarded double life sentence, one person got at a five-year sentence and three including girl’s mother Annalakshmi were acquitted.Judge Alamelu Natarajan pronounced the verdict on Tuesday. Sankar’s wife Kausalya was accompanying him when three bike-borne men hired by her parents attacked them in full public view near a busy bus stand in Udumalpet on March 13, 2016. Sankar died on way to the hospital, while Kausalya survived with head injuries. Saukalya’s parents were against their marriage as Sankar was a dalit. Both Sankar and Kausalya studied in a private engineering college in Pollachi when they got married against her parent’s wish. Kausalya, hailing from Dindigul, belongs to politically powerful Thevar caste.Kausalya who lives with Sankar’s family welcomed the court’s verdict. “Though I am against death penalty, the severest punishment given in this case would create fear among perpetrators of such heinous crimes. Our wait for the verdict did not go waste as the verdict given in my case was first of its kind in the country. The punishment like the double death penalty and double life sentence were given to prevent the convicts from escaping through the holes in the law. Hence I welcome the verdict as a whole,” she said, adding that however, she would appeal against the acquittal of her mother Annalakshmi, maternal uncle Pandithurai and her another relative in the Madras High Court.“If other convicts appeals against the verdict, I will fight them in the court,” she said, adding that she would continue her fight for justice in the court as well as in the public domain.“Justice for Sankar’s murder does not end with this court’s verdict alone. Only the enactment of a law against caste-based honour killing is the real justice for the murder of Sankar. I hope this verdict would help achieve this goal,” she said, sought police protection for Sankar’s family and herself following the acquittal of the three accused and tension prevailed in the court premises after the verdict.Special Public Prosecutor U Sankaranarayanan said that judge wanted the punishment given in the case to act as a deterrent in future against such honour killings. The court also ordered a total compensation of Rs 11.95 lakh to the girl and Shankar’s family, he said. After the investigation, the police arrested 11 persons including Kausalya’s parents in connection with the case and registered cases under seven different sections in the Indian Penal Code and under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police had filed a 1500 page charge sheet against the accused.

OTA Chennai trains lady officers of Afghan army

In a first, Officers Training Academy, Chennai, is training a group of 20 lady officers of the Afghan army and air force to enhance their skills and help train cadets in Afghanistan.”Though training sessions have been held in the past to enhance the skills of officers in other areas, this is the first time lady Afghan officers are here for military training,” said Captain Samriti, who is acting as an interpreter of Pashto, the official language of Afghanistan, and the coordinator of the programme. In the 20-day rigorous training module, the officers will be acquainted with basic military orientation including physical training, tactics, communication skills, logistics and leadership. Apart from training them on how to use hand grenades, AK-47s, INSAS (Assault rifle), they also handled ambush situations in mountainous terrain in classroom simulation exercises.Major Sanjana JR, the instructor for the programme, said it is a capsule programme, which encompasses major features of a one-year training. The training would end on December 23, and the Afghan officers will depart the next day.The lady officers in the age group of 20 to 45 are determined to fight the repressive Taliban terrorists. Hasina Hakimi, a-21-year-old, said that women in her country were keen to fight the Taliban and all they need is the support. “Even today, Taliban want women to be locked inside their homes and impose all kind of repressive measures on them,” she said, speaking in fluent Hindi which she learned from watching Bollywood movies of Amitabh Bachan and Shah Rukh Khan.Dr Rebia Gharshin, who works as an anaesthetist in the army hospital of Afghan Army, said the hold of Taliban has diminished in the urban areas, but is still strong in the rural parts. She said she studied medicine after the Taliban were ousted from power.Unlike lady officers in the Indian Army, women in the Afghan army take part in combats.”Yes. Why not? We should be given a chance in the combat. If Afghan lady officers are serving their nation in the combat, so why not the Indian Army, one of the largest armies in the world, gives us a chance. There are officers who are now flying fighters and inducted as pilots in the Navy and the Air Force. So why not is Indian army taking us in?” Major Sanjana said when asked whether Indian Army should allow women officers in the combat role.On being allowed to take part in combat, Captain Samriti said the debate has been going on for ages. “It has been the wish of women officers to engage in combat to serve the nation,” she said, adding that even though they were directly not involved in the combat roles, they actively engaged in the supportive roles such as intelligence and signals supporting personnel involved in the combat.

Actor Vishal meets CEO over nomination

A day after his nomination as an independent candidate for the December 21 RK Nagar bypoll was rejected, actor Vishal Krishna on Wednesday complained to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajesh Lakhoni. Vishal sought a reversal of the decision by the Returning Officer (RO) of RK Nagar Assembly Constituency who rejected his papers after accepting it initially. In a written complaint submitted to the CEO, the actor detailed on Tuesday’s events that led to the ultimate rejection of his nomination papers. “People know what happened yesterday. They know how a rejected application was reconsidered before being rejected again. I have submitted a complaint to him (Lakhoni) on all that happened,” Vishal told reporters at the Secretariat after the meeting.Interestingly, the actor has wrongly addressed the complaint to the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission who is the authority to hold local body polls instead of the CEO.On Tuesday, the RO’s office saw a dramatic situation when RO K Velusamy rejected Vishal’s nomination, prompting the actor to stage a dharna. Vishal had later claimed his nomination was accepted, and ‘thanked’ the EC for the same. However, the RO, late in the night, said Vishal’s nomination was rejected after a summary enquiry. The actor also sought to raise the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind’s office through their twitter handles. He also said that he planned to meet Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to lodge a ‘complaint’.Chief Minister Edapadi K Palanisami, while addressing his party workers in RK Nagar, denied any role of his party in the rejection of the actor’s nomination. He said that the election authorities would not have rejected the nomination if the papers found to be in order.

A year after Jayalalithaa’s death, AIADMK suffers without a strong leader

One year after the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, AIADMK and its state government are yet to overcome the political vacuum caused by her sudden demise. On Tuesday, the first death anniversary of Jayalalithaa would be observed in the state which has plunged into political instability because of her failure to name a successor for her in the party as well as in the government. After her death, the ruling AIADMK has witnessed splits and mergers in the last one year. Tamil Nadu also saw two Chief Ministers – O Panneerselvam and Edappadi K Palanisami – since her death.Jayalalithaa’s aide VK Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran are sidelined from the ruling party. AIADMK is also the only party to have its symbol frozen by the Election Commission of India twice and also to get back it. The Palanisami and Panneerselvam led unified AIADMK might have succeeded in getting back the party’s symbol but the symbol alone would not help succeed in the elections in absence of a strong leader in the stature of MGR and Jayalalithaa. However, the AIADMK government is constantly facing the flak of the opposition parties led by resurgent DMK which is accusing the ruling party succumbing to the pressure of the BJP government at the centre.”Before the French revolution, France King Louis XV told his successor that “after me the deluge”. An exactly same thing happened in Tamil Nadu after Jayalalithaa’s death. It is a deluge. It is a disaster as far as politics is concerned. She was a colossal figure in the state politics. When she was removed, there was such a vacuum that Tamil Nadu is yet to overcome the political vacuum and instability caused by her death,” Prof Bernard D’Sami, a political analyst and professor of History at Loyola College, Chennai told DNA.In a way, he also blamed Jayalalithaa for the present crisis faced by the AIADMK and its government. Jayalalithaa who was known for running the party and the government with iron hand often changing the party office bearers and the Cabinet Ministers to ensure that no one ever raised to the level to question her. “It is a lesson for everyone. A good leader has to prepare a second line of leaders but she has not done it. That is the reason for the political crisis in Tamil Nadu,” said Prof Bernard. The succession battle is not something new in the AIADMK. When AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran died, the AIADMK split into two factions with his wife Janaki and Jayalalithaa bothclaiming his political legacy. “Jayalalithaa who was groomed by MGR as a political heir. She was made a Rajya Sabha member and also appointed as party’s propaganda secretary. She proved herself in the stateassembly election and took the reins of the party,” he said.A senior AIADMK leader who doesn’t want to be named said that AIADMK would survive if both EPS and OPS works together without any ego.”Already the leaders of two groups are fighting against each other. It is not going to help anyone but the DMK,” he said. The AIADMK which has won all the elections since 2011 would be tested in the December 21 bye-election to the RK Nagar Assembly constituency which was twice represented by Jayalalithaa. “RK Nagar election is areferendum for the AIADMK since it was a seat held by Jayalalithaa. The election results will tell whether the people are going to accept the AIADMK as they have accepted Jayalalithaa. If they win, they will survive. If they are going to lose, the party will not survive at all,” said another political observer.

The announcement marks the continuation of the trend of film personalities entering politics in Tamil Nadu. DMK founder CN Annadurai and his successor M Karunanidhi were successful film scriptwriters who went on to become the chief ministers, AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran and party supremo Jayalalithaa were successful film stars.Vishal also openly took on BJP’s national secretary H Raja during the controversy involving Tamil movie Mersal and he also took on the ruling AIADMK in the recent case of a Tamil producer committing suicide following harassment by a financier.Political analyst Gnani felt that it was too early to talk about the impact of actor Vishal’s entering the fray in the RK Nagar. “We don’t know why he is contesting, what kind of politics is he going to pursue and who will he oppose? We can only know if there will be an impact if we had answers to these questions, ” he said.

Techie death: Madras HC orders removal of hoardings

The Madras high court on Thursday ordered the removal of all hoardings and cut-outs kept by the ruling AIADMK for the December 3 MGR centenary celebration in Coimbatore, days after a techie died after hitting a roadside hoarding.Hearing a public interest litigation filed by DMK’s Singanallur MLA N Karthik alleging that techie K Raghunath’s death was a result of his crashing into the illegal hoarding, the first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar, said that even though they don’t want to go into the factual aspects of the accident, the death could have indeed been caused as a result of the hoarding. The court wondered why the cost of damage caused to the roads be recovered from those who erected the cut-outs, hoardings and banners and asked the officials how they had permitted erection of such hoardings on roads.Raghunath, a techie, was back home in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore from the US to meet his prospective bride. He died on Saturday morning after he reportedly crashed his bike into the illegal wooden hoarding. As Ragupathy’s bike hit the structure and he fell from his bike, a truck ran him over. He was supposed to return to the US over the weekend and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. The tragic accident hit headlines after some painted a graffiti “Who killed Ragu?” at the spot. However, the Coimbatore police said that Raghunath died because a truck ran over him and claimed to be in possession of a CCTV footage to prove the same. The police have arrested truck driver Mohan in connection with the accident.

AIADMK fields its presidium chairman E Madhusudhanan for RK Nagar bypoll

Amid the talks of differences, the ruling AIADMK named its presidium chairman E Madhusudhanan as its candidate for the December 21 bye-election to the crucial RK Nagar Assembly constituency which was held by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.Madhusudhanan was the candidate of the O Panneerselvam faction in RK Nagar bypoll in April which was later cancelled by the Election Commission following allegations of malpractices.Madhusudhanan would take on resurgent DMK’s candidate Maruthu Ganesh, sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran, a nephew of jailed VK Sasikala, Jayalalithaa’s niece J Deepa. All the four were in the fray for the previously cancelled bypoll to the seat on April 12.Madhusudhanan’s candidature was announced on Thursday by the party’s Governing Council amid talks of differences in the ruling AIADMK between Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy CM Panneerselvam.Madhusudhanan, a veteran AIADMK leader, was a well-known leader in the RK Nagar constituency which he represented in 1991-96, the first tenure of Jayalalithaa as CM. He was also a member of her cabinet then. The December 21 bye-election to the RK Nagar was necessitated following the sudden demise of Jayalalithaa on December 5 last year.Dhinakaran who had lost the claim for the AIADMK and its election symbol two leaves after the Election Commission ruled in the favour of the EPS-OPS led faction last week. Deepa who is claiming to be the political heir of late AIADMK supremo also announced that she would contest the by-poll. Though the RK Nagar constituency is a traditional stronghold of the AIADMK, it would be an interesting contest with the three groups claiming the legacy of the Jayalalithaa fighting against each other.DMK seems to be confident of emerging victorious in the by-poll as it has got the support of opposition parties CPI (M), CPI and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, a Dalit party besides its allies Congress and IUML.

Madras HC orders closure of all sand quarries in Tamil Nadu to protect rivers

In a major setback for the Tamil Nadu government’s plans to open 70 new river sand quarries, the Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Wednesday ordered the closure of all sand quarries in Tamil Nadu within the next 6 months. The court also said that no new sand quarry should come up in the state. The court asked the state government to consider the import of sand through the state-owned corporation to meet the shortfall.Stating that the order has been passed in the public interest considering the need to protect rivers, environment, and farmers in the state, Justice R Mahadevan also directed the government to monitor illegal transporting of the river sand.Hearing a petition filed by M R M Ramaiya Enterprises Private Limited managing director M R M Ramaiya, seeking court’s intervention to sell sand imported from Malaysia, the judge also directed the Tamil Nadu government to release the Malaysian sand from the Tuticorin port. The court observed that the Tamil Nadu Minor Minerals Concession Rules, 1959 and the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Illegal Mining, Transportation and Storage of Minerals and Mineral Dealers Rules, 2011 cannot be imposed on imported sand since the importer had paid the appropriate tax (GST) on the consignment. The petitioner said she made an agreement with All Works Trading Limited, Singapore, on September 9 last to import one lakh tonne of sand. Accordingly, the petitioner’s company imported sand of the Sungai Pahang river in Kauntan city, Malaysia, to an extent of 55,443 metric tonnes through proper channels and also paid the GST. The sand is at present at the Tuticorin port. When the company wanted to sell the same in the state, the government did not give permission and registered an FIR against it. Hence, the petitioner sought a direction to the Tamil Nadu government not to insist the company to get the licence and to transport and sell the imported sand in the state. The Tamil Nadu government said in their petition that the state police had registered an FIR as the firm had transported the sand without the permit and it could not allow the Malaysian sand either to be sold in Tamil Nadu without the permit or to be transported to Kerala on road.In the order, Justice Mahadevan further directed quarries of granite and other minerals, except jelly, must be closed periodically to maintain ecological balance. The State shall also depute a team of experts from the Geological Department to identify and process the import of sands and minerals from countries which permit export. The government take a decision on the import of the river sand by state-owned corporations to meet out short supply, the court observed. The court also directed the Centre to issue appropriate guidelines specifying the type of sand and its usage so as to enable the importers to get appropriate certificates from the exporter authorities in other countries.Interestingly, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami last week chaired a high-level meeting with eight district collectors and superintendent of police and decided to open 70 new sand quarries to meet the requirement of sand for the construction sector. However, the environmentalists strongly opposed the move to open new sand quarries as it would affect the flow of the river and cause irreparable damage to the environment.

Girls made to clean toilets in Tamil Nadu govt school

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>A new controversy has erupted over a government school in Thiruvallur district where girl students were forced to clean toilets. The event came days after four girl students committed suicide in Vellore after being scolded by teachers for poor performance.A video of a weeping girl student cleaning the toilets with a piece of cloth was widely circulated via WhatsApp. In the video, a girl student in uniform scrubbing a toilet floor can be heard asking another girl to fetch some water and pour it on the floor. After the suicide of four girl students on Friday, this is the third incident of teachers allegedly abusing the students that has come to light. The toilet-cleaning incident happened at the RM Jain Government Girls Higher Secondary School which has over 1,000 students. “The headmistress of the school has forced girls to clean the toilets with bare hands. If the students refuse to clean, they were asked to kneel down and were hit on the head. Most of the students were under severe stress because of the humiliation meted out to them by the headmistress,” N Dinesh, Thiruvallur district secretary of Students Federation of India who had complained to the district collector in this regard. The chief educational officer of the Thiruvallur district told DNA that his officials conducted an enquiry on the complaint and forwarded the report to the higher authorities to initiate action against the school. “We spoke to the girl students who appeared in the video. They told us that HM asked them to clean the toilets,” the official said.

30 dolphins washed ashore in Thoothukudi coast in TN; 4 dead

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>As many as 30 Dolphins washed ashore near Punnaikayal village in Thoothukudi district on Monday evening while four of them found dead. This is the first incident of dolphins washing ashore in such large numbers in the state. The dolphins were spotted on the shallow waters of the sea struggling for their life by fishermen at around 6 pm on Monday.S Loga Sundaranathan, Forest Range Officer of Tiruchendur in Thoothukudi district said that out of the 30 dolphins, about 15 of them were too close to the shore and they were struggling for their life. “With the help of the local fishermen, we tried to drag them into the deeper part of the sea but some of them kept coming back to the shore. We continued the rescue operation till early hours of the day. Except for the four female dolphins that washed ashore dead, the rest of them pushed back into the sea,” he said. The forest official said that dolphins which normally found in the deeper water might have accidentally entered the coastal water where the depth ranges from five to six meters. “We don’t know what the reason for the dolphins to wash ashore is. Only after the post-mortem, we will know the cause of the death and washing ashore,” the official told DNA.This is the second major incident of big sea mammals being washed ashore in the district in less than two years and the first involving the dolphins. On January 11 last year, 83 pilot whales had washed ashore in the same village but were taken back to the sea. However, they have washed ashore again leaving all of them dead the following day. In January 1974, around 70 pilot whales had washed ashore at Manapad in Tuticorin district.

Madras High Court frees 35-member crew of US anti-piracy vessel

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Madras High Court on Monday set free the 35 crew members including 23 foreign nationals of a private US anti-piracy ship MV Seaman Guard Ohio after the prosecution failed to prove its charge that the ship and its crew were in the Indian waters with unlicensed arms.Justice Basheer Ahamed has set aside the 2016 sentence of a Tuticorin court that awarded five-year jail terms to 10 crew and 25 security guards aboard an American ship that was seized by authorities in Indian waters in 2013. The Madurai Bench of the High Court held that the charges against them had not been proved. The lower court in Tuticorin had found the crew of US company owned ship ‘Seaman Guard Ohio’ guilty of violating Indian laws by possessing weapons. It had also slapped a fine of Rs 3,000 on each of them.Justice Ahamed also directed that the fine amount paid by the crew members be returned.’Q’ branch police had filed the case against the crew members for illegally entering Indian waters with weapons.Flying West African country Sierra Leone’s flag, Seaman Guard Ohio, owned by US company AdvanFort, was found in Indian waters on an October 2013 night, around 15 nautical miles from Tuticorin port. The Indian Coast Guard escorted the ship to Tuticorin port, around 600 km from Chennai. The Coast Guard said the crew included eight Indians and two Ukrainians while six British, 14 Estonians, a Ukrainian and four Indians were among the security guards on the ship and all were arrested after arms and ammunition without valid authorisation or documents was found aboard. The Q branch of the Tamil Nadu police had also alleged that the ship had obtained 1,500 litres of diesel illegally from private sources. The police had said that the entry of the ship was a threat to internal security. The ship’s crew had claimed that the ship had run out of fuel and was stranded. However, the prosecution submitted that had there been an emergency, the Captain could have alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) seeking assistance from the Indian Coast Guard. The Captain chose to lay anchor in Indian waters and buy about 1,500 litres of fuel clandestinely with the help of agents, the police charged. The ship’s owners AdvanFort specialise in providing maritime security against pirates. After the Indian Coast Guard escorted the ship to Tuticorin port, those aboard were questioned by officials of different security departments and agencies. In 2014, the Madras High Court dismissed the charges against the crew and armed guards but reaffirmed charges against the ship’s captain and the fuel vendors. On an appeal by the Tamil Nadu Police, the Supreme Court in 2015 set aside the high court judgment and ordered a trial by the Tuticorin sessions court.

Talks of fissures in AIADMK as OPS skips party event

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Days after the Election Commission recognised the ruling unified faction under Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and his Deputy CM O Panneerselvam as the AIADMK and allocated them the Two Leaves symbol, fissures seem to have now emerged in the party with Panneerselvam supposedly skipping a party event. The conspicuous absence of Panneerselvam in an event in Madurai to celebrate the retrieval of the symbol has triggered talks of growing differences in the ruling party.OPS loyalist Aspire Swaminathan, member of the AIADMK’s IT wing, expressed his displeasure at the event organised on Saturday to celebrate the retrieval of the symbol, pointing out that no invite was sent out to anyone. “Minister has announced success meet to celebrate retrieval of the symbol today. They will hoist party flag in a grand manner. There is no invite or information about these celebrations to anyone,” he tweeted. The banners and posters erected across the city did not mention the name of Panneerselvam. Besides, Palanisami, after hoisting the party flag, unveiled a plaque that did not have Panneerselvam’s name. His supporters saw this as an attempt to sideline him.Swaminathan’s post came in the wake of another OPS loyalist and Rajya Sabha MP V Maitreyan expressing his concern over the differences in the unified party. “It has been three months since the EPS, OPS factions merged. Months have gone, but have the hearts synced,” he asked in a Facebook post.On Saturday, Maitreyan who made a sudden visit to Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Banwarilal Purohit, said there was no information about the event to celebrate the retrieval of the symbol to the OPS supporters. “I don’t know whether Panneerselvam or party deputy coordinator KP Munnusamy were invited or not. But I can tell you Madurai MP Gopalakrishnan and Madurai South MLA SS Saravanan were not informed about the event. Both of them are OPS supporters,” he told reporters. He expressed hope that OPS and EPS would ensure that no such incidents happen in the future. The growing differences in the ruling AIADMK might impact the outcome of the December 21 RK Nagar bypoll. Already, the principal opposition party DMK has begun electioneering retaining Marudhu Ganesh as its candidate.DMK working president MK Stalin also wrote to opposition parties including Left and VCK seeking their support. VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan immediately announced his party support the DMK.

EPS-OPS win AIADMK party symbol battle

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The faction led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami (EPS) and his deputy O Panneerselvam (OPS) is the real AIADMK and is entitled to use the party symbol ‘two leaves’, the Election Commission ruled on Thursday. The order ends almost a year-long battle and deals a blow to the other group led by jailed VK Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dinakaran.”The petitioners group led by E Madhusudhanan, O Panneerselvam and S Semmalai, and also supported presently by the impleading applicant EK Palaniswami, the present Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, enjoys support of majority members in the legislative and organisational wings,” the EC said.AIADMK is the only party whose symbol was frozen and restored twice.Sasikala is currently serving a four-year sentence in a Bengaluru jail in a disproportionate assets case.”The order proved that their faction was the real one and they have the support of the cadre,” Panneerselvam said dedicating the EC order to Jayalalithaa.CM Palanisami said that the EC has rendered justice to the AIADMK cadres by its order.”The EC order has come as a bolt from blue to those who had attempted to ruin the party and bring down the government,” he said taking a jibe at Sasikala’s faction.Dismissing allegations of BJP’s support, he said that they got the symbol as they enjoyed the real support of the party cadres and the elected representatives. After announcing victory at party’s meeting even before EC’s official declaration, Palanisami retracted his announcement blaming the media for misquoting.”Chief Minister had expressed happiness over the ‘two leaves’ symbol verdict based on the information given by the media,” an official release clarified. However, Dhinakaran alleged that the EC did not give a fair decision and said that he will challenge the order in the Supreme Court.”Even though the EC is an independent body it is headed by a former Gujarat chief secretary. It is obvious that the commission’s decision is influenced by the Centre, which was backing Panneerselvam earlier and now supports Palanisami,” he alleged. The commission, in its order, noted that Jayalalithaa’s niece J Deepa who also claimed the AIADMK’s symbol was not even a primary member of the party. After the demise of Jayalalithaa on December 5 last year, a power struggle had broken out between newly appointed party general secretary Sasikala and the then Chief Minister Panneerselvam.Panneerselvam rebelled against Sasikala after the AIADMK legislature party unanimously elected her as its leader to replace him on February 5. But, the Supreme Court’s order convicting Sasikala in the Jayalalithaa’s disproportionate assets case prevented her from occupying the CM chair and she handpicked Palanisami for the job.Panneerselvam, with the support of 11 MLAs, unsuccessfully voted against the trust motion moved by Palanisami in the state assembly. The commission froze the symbol on March 22, disallowing its use in the RK Nagar by-election in Chennai. The decision came after the EC heard both sides, Panneerselvam and Sasikala factions, which staked their claim to the party symbol. After cancellation of RK Nagar by-poll, Sasikala and Dinakaran found themselves sidelined in their own faction. Even as the dispute was pending with the Commission, OPS and EPS joined hand on August 21 and ousted Sasikala and Dinakaran from the party. The Commission resumed the hearing on October 6, concluded it on November 8 and reserved its order. However, it could not meet the November 10 deadline set by the Supreme Court for deciding the dispute.

Rajya Sabha MP’s post hints at differences in ‘unified’ AIADMK

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Three months after the merger of the rival AIADMK factions led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami and his now deputy O Panneerselvam, all is not well within the unified AIADMK. A hint has been dropped by senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP, V Maitreyan, in a social media post.“It has been three months since the EPS-OPS faction merged. Months have gone, but have the hearts synced,” Maitreyan wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning. Maitreyan was the first AIADMK leader to join Panneerselvam’s rebellion against then party general secretary VK Sasikala on February 7, days after she tried to replace him as chief minister. When asked what prompted him to write such a post, Maitreyan declined to comment, saying he has nothing more to say about it. His Tuesday’s post was his second hint at the discontent in the ruling AIADMK in this month. On November 6, he complained that he has been ignored in the relief works in the rain-hit areas. When asked about Maitreyan’s remark, senior AIADMK leader and minister, D Jayakumar, said he was against discussing the party’s internal issues in public. He also denied any issues within the party.Maitreyan, whose political roots can be traced to the RSS and BJP before joining the AIADMK, was supposed to have played a major role in the merger in which PM Narendra Modi had shown keen interest.

TN Minister threatens to take action against actor Kamal Haasan

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Tamil Nadu Minister D Jayakumar on Monday threatened to initiate action against actor Kamal Haasan for levelling false charges against the AIADMK government.“We cannot accept levelling of false charges against the government. We will not hesitate to take action against actor Kamal Haasan for making baseless charges. We can see clearly Kamal Haasan is acting at whose behest,” senior AIADMK leader and fisheries minister Jayakumar told reporters responding to the actor’s latest twitter take on the AIADMK government.Haasan who is set to launch his political party has attacked the ruling AIADMK over last week’s Income Tax raids targeting jailed party leader VK Sasikala and her family members at properties including the Chennai residence of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. “Theft by a government is a crime. Not proving after unravelling, isn’t it a crime too? The bell for justice has been rung. Criminals should not rule…People should turn judges. Let’s wake up and arise. People should act. People should get the republic (state) function,” he tweeted on Sunday night.Jayakumar accused Haasan of making unsubstantiated charges on the government. “I asked him to provide pointed charges of corruption against the government three months ago. He is yet to provide those details. But he is going on making false charges against the government,” he said, adding that in a democracy, no need to ring the bells like in the era of the monarchy. “There are several ways to file corruption complaints. One can file a complaint with Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption offices in all the districts. If no action was taken, they can approach, the courts,” he said.Haasan has become an outspoken critic of the AIADMK government taking it over on various issues, particularly, on corruption. Amid the expectation of launch of his political party on his 63rd birthday two weeks ago, the actor announced the soon-to-be-launched whistle-blower app “maiamwhistle” which could be used by the public and his fans to expose corruption and failures of the government.

Nirmala Sitharaman seeks inquiry in firing on fishermen

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced that a detailed inquiry would be conducted into the incident of firing at Tamil Nadu fishermen to determine who shot at them.Fishermen from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu alleged that Indian Coast Guard (ICG) opened fire at them, but the ICG has denied the accusation against them.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an interaction with members of the CII here, Sitharaman said that she would order an inquiry into the firing. “After I came know about the incident, I inquired with ICG, but they have denied firing. As the media continued to report on the incident and a even fishermen showed the injury sustained by him, I asked the ICG chief about it the next day again. He has said that we don’t use such bullets,” she said.Taking exception to the narrative of “our force attacking our own fishermen”, she went on to appeal to this langauge not be used to decribe the event. “If some wrong has been committed, we will definitely punish the wrongdoers, but don’t accuse or point fingers at the ICG. We don’t use such bullets at all. We don’t know from where that bullet came. It does not mean that the fishermen are wrong. However, we can come to a conclusion only after a detailed inquiry,” she said.In his complaint, fishermen Arokiyadass said that he, along with five other fishermen, was fishing on the high seas about four nautical miles from Olaikuda at around 3.15 pm on Monday when personnel from the ICG vessel-77 asked them to stop. When they kept moving, stating that they had laid the net and could not stop, the coast guard personnel opened fire at them, they alleged.

No end to woes of Sasikala and her extended kin

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The death of former former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa last year has sent her close aide Sasikala’s fortunes on a downward spiral. From her conviction along with two relatives in the disproportionate assets case to losing control over the AIADMK government, Sasikala’s family has hit a rough patch. It’s also facing the heat with more court cases and raids.Key members of her family include Sasikala’s husband M Natarajan, nephews T TV Dinakaran and V N Sudhagaran, her brother Divakaran, and her deceased brother’s wife J Ilavarasi. So far, seven of her family members are facing a jail sentence and court cases against other family members are in the advanced stages of hearing. Sasikala, her sister-in-law Ilavarasi and her nephew VN Sudhakaran were sentenced to four-year imprisonment in the Jayalalithaa’s disproportionate assets case in February when the Supreme Court upheld the trial court verdict. The apex court ruling coincided with the rebellion led by her one-time loyalist O Panneerselvam. This saw her being sidelined in the party and the government, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi actively backing it.On Friday, Sasikala’s ailing husband M Natarajan, who underwent a dual-organ transplant last month, was sentenced to two years in jail along with his nephew V Bhaskaran and three others in a luxury car import case. The Central Bureau of Investigation charged Natarajan and four others for importing a Lexus car in 1994 by declaring it as a used car to evade an import duty of Rs 1.6 crore.Sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dinakaran’s sister Sreedaladevi and her husband Bhaskaran were also convicted in a disproportionate assets case.Dinakaran has been asked by the ED to pay a fine of Rs 28 crore for violation of rules governing foreign exchanges. The move has now been confirmed by Madras HC.To compound their woes, the Sasikala family is facing a new trouble through the Income Tax searches that were conducted on 187 premises across the country, unearthing documents showing undisclosed investments to the tune of Rs 1,430 crore.

J Jayalalithaa’s kin slam Centre, Sasi

Now, he visits Karunanidhi,” he said, hours after the I-T officials completed the four-hour-long search at Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence “Veda Nilayam”.Sasikala, a trusted aide of Jayalalithaa, had lived at the late CM’s residence with her sister-in-law Ilavarassi and three children for over two decades. On Friday night, I-T officials recovered a laptop, a desktop and four pen drives from two rooms used by Sasikala, said a senior official. “We received input that some important electronic storage devices are going to be removed from the two rooms,” an I-T official said. According to him, it was a “limited mission”.Meanwhile, Palaniswami blamed Sasikala’s family for the search and said that the state government has nothing to do with it. “I came to know through news reports that the search at Poes Garden was a continuation of the raids conducted in the premises connected to Sasikala and her relatives. No search was done in Amma’s (Jayalalithaa) room,” he said.Jayalalithaa’s niece J Deepa, who made vain attempts to enter the Poes Garden residence on Friday night, also slammed Sasikala’s family. “This property was earned by Amma with her blood and sweat (as an actor in the) film industry. This raid is being carried out to defame Amma and was done with the cooperation of the family of Sasikala,” she said.ALLEGATIONS ABOUNDDinakaran alleged that CM Palaniswami and deputy CM would go to any extent to safeguard their position.

Tamil Nadu Governor in political storm over admin meet

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit has stirred a new political controversy in the state by holding a discussion with Coimbatore district officials, as the Opposition parties — led by the DMK — have termed it a gross interference in the state’s rights. The ruling AIADMK, however, did not see any threat to the state’s autonomy. In spite of the opposition parties flaying him for holding the meeting on Tuesday, Purohit swept a bus bay as part of a cleanliness drive under the Swachh Bharat initiative on Wednesday and also held a discussion with NGOs and resident welfare associations working on solid waste management. In a strong message to the opposition, the governor declared that he would visit the district as well as the other districts every year. He also expressed hope that Coimbatore would soon become the cleanest city in the country. The governor’s meeting evoked comparison with neighbouring Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi who has earned the wrath of the ruling Congress government for interfering in its administration.Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said that the disease of governor interfering in the elected government’s administration has spread to Tamil Nadu too. He alleged Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the governors and lieutenant governors to undermine the opposition party run governments in the state and the union territories.

I-T officials likely to question Sasikala in prison

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>After detecting undisclosed income of Rs1,430 crore from the simultaneous searches at 187 premises connected to jailed AIADMK leader VK Sasikala’s kin and their associates, Income Tax department officials are planning to question her and her sister-in-law Ilavarassi in Bengaluru prison. Both Sasikala and Ilavarassi are undergoing a four-year imprisonment in Bengaluru jail after being convicted in former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s disproportionate assets case in February this year by the Supreme Court. In the massive multi-city search operation that lasted for five days till Monday, the IT officials unearthed incriminating documents revealing undisclosed investments to the tune of Rs 1,430 crore, Rs 7 crore cash, Rs five crore worth gold and diamonds from the premises connected the AIADMK leader’s kin and their associates. The I-T officials said that they were planning to approach the appropriate court to get its permission to question Sasikala and Ilavarassi on the tax evasion. “In the course of our investigation, we will question them,” the official said.I-T officials questioned Ilavarassi’s son Vivek Jayaraman who is MD of Jaya TV and CEO of Jazz Cinemas and her daughters Krishnapriya and Shakila on the documents seized from their premises and their source of income for the investments made by them.Sasikala, a long-time aide of late Jayalalithaa, was enjoying enormous power in the AIADMK government. After the electrocution of her husband Jayaraman in Jayalalithaa’s farm in Hyderabad in 1990, Ilavarassi along with her three children were brought to stay in late Chief Minister’s Poes Garden residence.Sources said that Vivek was supposedly taking care of all the business dealings of Sasikala’s family. Vivek rose to prominence in November 2015 when his Jazz Cinemas acquired Luke Cinemas, the 11screen multiplex owned by SPI Cinemas in the Phoenix Mall in Velacherry here. It was alleged that SPI Cinemas popularly known as Sathyam Cinemas was coerced into selling their multiplex at the mall to Vivek who later renamed it as Jazz Cinemas. TN governor discusses development work in Coimbatore; opposition calls it interference by Centre

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>In a first, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Tuesday held a meeting with Coimbatore district administration officials to discuss the developmental works undertaken in the district even as the opposition parties dub it as a yet another attempt of the Centre’s interference. On Wednesday, Purohit inspected the Gandhipuram bus stand in the textile city and took part in a cleaning drive as part of the Swachch Bharat Initiative. He also inspected e-toilets in the bus stand and also visited a residential society – Sunnyside Residency in the city. He also held a discussion with NGOs and resident welfare associations working on solid waste management. “I have carried out visits in Maharashtra and I felt they (people in that state) were the best in maintaining toilets and waste management. Now when I visit cities in Tamil Nadu I have changed my opinion,” Purohit said addressing the discussion.Breaking the convention of maintaining a distance in the state administration followed by the past Governors in Tamil Nadu, Purohit has chosen to hold a meeting with the Coimbatore district administration, civic body officials and police officers on the ongoing developmental works. What raised many eyebrows was the fact that even Municipal Administration Minister and senior AIADMK leader SP Velumani who hails from Coimbatore was not invited to the Tuesday’s meeting. The Governor’s meeting was held amid the accusations from the opposition that Narendra Modi government at the centre is interfering in the administration of the state government led by the faction-ridden AIADMK.Governor’s meeting evoked comparison with Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi who is known for making spot visits and holding review meetings with the officials. But the Congress government in Puducherry is strongly opposed to Bedi’s style of functioning calling it as gross interference in the day-to-day functioning of the elected government. Strangely, AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu seems to have no problem with the Governor’s meeting the state officials as several State Ministers supported Purohit.State Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan and Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani on Tuesday said that the autonomy of the State would not be affected by such a meeting. “Such review meeting by the Governor will help improve the relationship with the Centre which would help in the progress of the state,” said Velumani.Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said that the disease of Governor interfering in the elected government’s administration has spread to Tamil Nadu too. “There is nothing wrong with Governor visiting various places but taking unilateral decisions is wrong. The centre is trying to control the state government through the Governors and Lt Governors,” he said.Asking the Governor from conducting any further such review meetings, Leader of Opposition and DMK working president MK Stalin said if the Governor was really interested in good administration, he should ask the Edappadi K Palanisami government to prove his majority in the floor of the House.DMK’s Rajya Sabha MP and organizing secretary RS Bharathi accused the Modi government of trying to play a dirty game using Governor as a tool. He said the BJP wanted to undermine the elected government in Tamil Nadu like how they were doing in Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh. “When there is an elected government, as per the constitution, the Governor cannot act independently and he should act according to the state cabinet’s advice,” he noted.Senior DMK leader said when the Governor planned such a meeting, Chief Minister should have condemned it right away and instructed the officials to stay away from it. “Chief Minister should have either condemned the Governor’s meeting or he should have resigned. But they don’t have the gut to oppose it as they are afraid of income tax raids,” he said, wondering whether Governor would have held such a meeting if former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was alive.Meanwhile, a section of Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) opposed the ‘unprecedented’ meeting chaired by the Governor with the officials and attempted to stage a black flag demonstration on Tuesday in front of Circuit House, where the meeting was in progress. However, police removed the activists, led by its General Secretary, K Ramakrishnan. The choice of Coimbatore district for the first meeting itself shows that it was a political ploy by the BJP, said Ramakrishnan. In the BJP’s political scheme of thing, Coimbatore and Tirupur districts are their prime targets for their electoral growth in the state, he said, pointing to several visits of senior BJP leaders to Coimbatore in the recent times. “Governor is trying to politically help the BJP in the two districts by trying to create an impression that the developmental works are happening at the behest of him who is a representative of the union government,” he said.

No politics in Modi calling on Karunanidhi, says MK Stalin

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>DMK working president MK Stalin on Wednesday clarified that there was no politics involved in Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting his father and party chief M Karunanidhi as it was only a courtesy call.Leading a demonstration against the Modi’s demonetization move on its first anniversary in Madurai, Stalin said that some wanted to create confusion over Modi calling on Karunanidhi who is recovering from illness but it would not succeed.Modi’s unscheduled visit to Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence on November 6 when he arrived here to attend a couple of private function set off speculation of a political realignment ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.Stalin said that he had clarified on Monday itself that Modi had met Karunanidhi as the DMK president was a senior Dravidian leader and that he was taking rest after recovering from old age illness.”When the reporters asked me whether the meeting had any political importance, I told them clearly that Modi did not come for politics, we are also not ready to use him anytime for politics,” he explained to put to rest all the speculation of the political realignment. He noted that Modi was here to attend private events and expressed his wish to meet “our leader”. He said that he returned early from Sharjah in Dubai when he was informed about the PM’s visit.DMK leader said that Modi invited the 93-year-old Karunanidhi to stay at his Delhi residence. “He (Modi) said they won’t allow you (Karunanidhi) to take rest here as there would be a stream of visitors. He also invited (Karunanidhi) to come to his Delhi residence for treatment,” Stalin said.”Therefore this is humanitarian, and beyond politics,” he said.Stalin said his party announced deferring the ‘Black -Day’ protests in eight districts including Chennai only because of rains.

I also need to find myself. The dates will be announced later,” Kamal Haasan said announcing the launch of his app “Maiam Whistle” (Maiam in Tamil means centre), a digital platform where people will be able to complain and interact with him. He said he will go around the state as “citizen K”.”I am already here,” Haasan said when asked when he will make a debut in politics. He said he was “working on the structural part” of his new outfit.”People say I am going to launch a political party. I am waiting because I need a strong foundation. I am discussing with experts…I have started preliminary work. Don’t ask me when I will launch it and what will be its name. It is like asking a pregnant lady what is the name of the baby. It’s not the time for me to talk about this now,” the veteran actor said, noting that he would normally take six months to even to prepare for a film.Explaining why he was not in a position to give details of his political plans, Haasan said he was looking at larger goals and a longer time. “My dream is to create a good Tamil Nadu. You have to give me time to come up with a manifesto, a name. I am working on the structural part of it. I am in no hurry, there is no need to hurry, I need your support,” he said.Asked about the perceptions that he was anti-Hindu, Kamal said that he was only talking about Hindu extremism and not Hindu terrorism. “I am not starting a party to hurt Hindus. I come from a Hindu family and I do not want to lose the affection of my family first. But when there are mistakes, I will speak about it.”I am only talking reality when I speak of violence. All Hindus should understand and discuss. Nobody should indulge in such violence. It applies to Hindus and Muslims. When I say extreme, it doesn’t mean terror. But there is violence and no one can deny it,” he said. When asked about Hindutva elements attacking him, Kamal said: “I only spoke the truth. If punishment is meted out for that, I am ready to accept it.” He was apparently referring to threats to his life from some Hindutva organisations after his recent statement slamming Hindu extremism. The actor’s announcement for his impending party launch has evoked strong response from the ruling AIADMK, with which he had several run-ins in the recent past. Senior AIAMDK leader and Minister D Jayakumar said that his party would not be affected by Kamal’s proposed party. “AIADMK is like a Himalayan mountain. We will not be frightened by small hills,” he said, adding that AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa still lived in the hearts of people.Talking about the app, he said the name was derived from the Ashoka Chakra which is a virtuous cycle that has become a vicious circle. He wanted people to be whistleblowers. “Tomorrow, I may also get some political responsibility and the whistle should be blown against me too if I do something wrong,” he asserted.Asked how he would keep away tainted people and money from his organisation, Kamal said that he has taken a conscious decision of not admitting anyone with the record of taint in his organisation. He added that even in his film career, there has been no black money.

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on ailing DMK president M Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence, DMK on Monday asked its district units except eight rain-affected districts to hold a massive demonstration to observe November 8 – the first anniversary of demonetization as ‘Black Day’.”Condemning the BJP government at the Centre, all the DMK cadres wearing black clothes would take part in the demonstration to be led by the district secretaries at their respective district headquarters on November 8 marking the first anniversary of the demonetization,” the DMK statement said. The party, however, exempted the eight districts that are hit by the heavy rains and floods to allow the cadres to carry out the relief works. The timing of the party announcement has raised several eyebrows as it comes hours after Modi visited the party chief. In fact, Modi’s visit to Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram home was announced at the last minute.Modi who was in the city to attend a Tamil daily’s 75 years celebration made a brief visit to inquire about the health condition of the-93-year-old Karunanidhi who is recovering from a long illness and recently made his first public appearance in months at an exhibition. Kamal Haasan will soon float political party

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Popular actor Kamal Haasan on Sunday announced that he would launch a political party soon, putting an end to speculation over his political ambitions.”The launch of the political party will happen in a calm manner and launch of a mobile app on November 7 is the first step,” the actor announced at a function to mark the 39th anniversary of his welfare association at Kelambakkam near Chennai.Haasan said his fans would contribute funds for the party and the app will facilitate keeping proper accounts of funds collected.According to the actor, there is no shame in stretching out one’s hands for welfare of the people and if only the rich pay their taxes properly, the country would be on the right path. “I will not deposit the funds in Swiss banks. Instead, I will try to bring back our money lodged in the Swiss banks,” Haasan said. The actor also hit back at detractors who had issued death threats to him over his comments on terrorism spreading its wings into Hindu right-wing groups. He said jail or murder is the fate meant for those who speak out against the present establishment. “If we question them, they call us anti-nationals and want us jailed. Now, since there is no space in jails, they want to shoot us and kill us,” he said. “Terrorism is different from extremism. I don’t preach my ideology to others. I am a rationalist,” he added.

Chennaities suffer as TN govt fails to learn lesson from 2015 deluge

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>It is only a week since the North East monsoon has set in, but Chennai and neighbouring districts of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur have come to a standstill with heavy downpour. South Chennai and its suburbs — which bore the brunt of the devastating December 2015 deluge — are the ones that are affected by the floods once again. Tamil Nadu government seems to have learnt little from the massive floods. So far, Chennai has received 93 percent more rainfall from the NE Monsoon even as the Met department forecast more downpour due to a low pressure persisting in the Bay of Bengal. Schools and colleges continued to remain shut from October 31 and several universities have postponed semester exams. The state government started mobile medical camp in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts to prevent the spread of diseases. The precarious flood situation in Mudichur, Varadharajapuram, Adhanur, Urapakkam, Kovilambakkam, Madipakkam and Velachery raises the questions over the flood mitigation works undertaken by the government administration. The public works department spent Rs 19 crore to widen and deepen the Adyar River in September as part of the NE Monsoon flood mitigation works. “We complained to the district collector and PWD officials that the widening work was taken up without marking boundaries of the river. We also wanted the height of the bund to be raised to the level of 10 feet. Our pleas were not heard. Now we are flooded once again,” said president of Federation of Varadharajapuram Welfare Associations, V Rajasekaran.Professor S Janakarajan, water resource expert and retired professor of Madras Institute of Development Studies, finds fault with the government’s flood management policy. “Main problem is that the government acts only after the monsoon starts. For them, preparedness means keeping the earthmover and oil engine to pump out the water ready. They don’t have a long-term plan on flood management,” he said.Janakarajan asks the government to stop looking at the rainfall as a burden. “We should have a dual policy of conserving water and flood management,” he said, urging the government to think along the lines of conserving water.None of the lakes that are overflowing in the Chennai suburbs were neither desilted nor deepened by the government. “There are 30 lakes in Tambaram taluk which is severely hit by floods. If those lakes are freed from encroachments, desilted and deepened, the floods could have been prevented,” said V Subramanian, founder secretary of Sabari Green Foundation in Chennai. Another reason for the widespread flooding in the South Chennai and its suburbs was the destruction of Pallikaranai Marshland which would earlier act as buffer zone absorbing overflowing waters from these lakes, he said. However, a senior PWD official claimed that the flood was mainly because of the heavy downpour. “In the first week of the monsoon, we have got over 74 percent of the average rainfall during the entire monsoon. If not for the pre-monsoon works, the flood impact might have been more in Mudichur and Varadharajapuram areas,” the official claimed.Over 10k shiftedAt least 12 people killed in rains in Tamil Nadu this week.Over 10,000 people shifted to 105 state-run relief camps in Chennai.Schools in Chennai, other coastal towns continue to remain closed. The northeast monsoon expected to last until early December.
