Periya Pandi, a police inspector from Chennai, was shot dead by robbers early today morning in Jaitaran of Pali district. He was shot by the robbers by his own service revolver. Pandi was reportedly in Pali to nab a gang of burglars who had stolen gold from a jewellery shop in Chennai in November. Periya Pandi was from the Maduravoli police station. The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday at Ramavas village in Jaitaran area of Pali district. The Chennai police had information that the accused were hiding in a closed down brick kiln. The team of Chennai police had seven members. Two waited in their vehicle while five went into the klim. The police had a scuffle with the familiy of the robbers. They managed to nab the accused and were taking him out towards their vehicle when the accused pulled out Paandi’s revolver from the hostler and shot at him and managed to get away. The injured inspector of Chennai was taken to the hospital at Jaitaran, but he died on the way. As per reports from police sources, the team from Chennai had not informed the local police and not asked for any reinforcements. The burglary had taken place in Kolathur Jewellery shop 3.5 kg gold was burgled by the robbers after drilling a hole in the ceiling of the jewellery shop. The accused Nathuram Jat and his accomplices had been traced to be the residents of Ramavas village of Pali district in Rajasthan. Pali SP Deepak Bhargav has reached the spot and is taking stock of the situation. Blocades have beeen ordered in the district to nab the accused. Body of the deceased officer has been taken to the mortuary at the local government hospital.
