The first phase of polling is scheduled for December 9.As per the election schedule announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the gazette notification, which marks formal commencement of the election process in 93 Assembly constituencies going to polls in the second round, will be issued on November 20.A senior official said that the process for conducting the Assembly elections in 93 constituencies of central and north Gujarat will begin with issuance of the notification on Monday.Incidentally, the last day for submission of nominations for 89 seats going to polls in the first phase is November 21. The BJP has declared candidates for 60 of the 89 seats, while Congress is yet to announce any candidate. The BJP has also announced names of 46 candidates, who will contest in the second phase. The Congress’s initial list is expected to be announced by Sunday night, according to party insiders.In addition to BJP, which has won five straight Assembly elections in Gujarat since 1995, and Congress, which is looking to end its 22-year-old drought in the state, a number of other parties are also in the fray.These include Aam Aadmi Party, Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and Sharad Yadav-led Janata Dal (U).
