<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>In a bid to promote waste processing at the source, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has written to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to ensure the charge for the usage of waste composting machine is set at the residential rate — for consumption of electricity — for both housing societies and hotels or restaurants. According to the civic body, a reduction in electricity bill will encourage housing societies to set up waste composting units at their premises.Since the BMC is pushing bulk waste generators to set up waste processing at their source, electricity bills at commercial rates could hamper the civic body’s plan.”We have written to the MREC to consider our proposal to lower the charge for composting machine as this will benefit the whole city. It will encourage housing societies as well as commercial units to set up the system,” said Nidhi Choudhary, deputy municipal commissioner (special). All the BMC markets will be equipped with composting machines to process wet waste at the source. “Waste at vegetable and fruits market will be composted at the market premises with the help of a composting unit which will be set up,” she said.”We are exploring possibilities to allow housing societies who can not process waste at their premises to use the market composting unit,” said Chaudhary.Of the 4,749 bulk generators identified across the city, more than 3,000 bulk generators are yet to start waste processing. The civic administration has, however, reiterated that it would not spare bulk generators for not starting waste processing at their premises. “As majority of the bulk generators have not started waste processing, the civic body is planning to take action against them,” said an official from the Solid Waste Management (SWM). Among the bulk generators, government establishments and premium hotels are yet to start waste processing at their end.WASTE MATTERS7,500metric tonnes of garbage generated every day4,749bulk generators in the city3,000bulk generators yet to start waste processing91markets to be equipped with composting units
