The roof leakage of Asiatic Library would be done away with permanently since state Government has decided to seal the issue forever.BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar had raised the issue of water leakage leading to damage of hundreds of books in Central Library Asiatic Society. While raising the issue through a starred question Bhatkhalkar asked whether there would be any action against the contractor who undertook maintenance work of the roof last year after leakage. He also demanded blacklisting the contractor for repeated leakage of the roof. PWD Minister Chandrakant Patil informed the House that there was leakage five years ago and the repair work was carried out then. He informed that last year there was roof leakage but since any repair contract can not be guaranteed for more than five years, it was not possible to take action against the contractor. Ashish Shelar pointed out that the Asiatic Library is a construction of British Era and the lowest step of the Library is at sea level and the British construction ensured that water should not enter from below during high tide and heavy rains. Shelar criticised Government saying, “British ensured that water would not come in from steps and that is the reason our Government is allowing the water inside the library from the roof.”Bhatkhalkar asked how was it possible to have leakage again this year if the contractor had repaired it last year. He also questioned as to who was responsible for faulty tender which did not ensured maintenance after repair. Chandrakant Patil informed that he would take action against the contractor and hold a meeting soon after the winter session to sort out all the issues pertaining to repair and maintenance of Asiatic library for ever.
