BJP state president Ashok Parnami said that permission has been sought from the Election Commission (EC) for the foundation ceremony of the refinery and said he (Gehlot) do not have to worry.PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of the refinery in Barmer on January 14. During the last Ashok Gehlot government, Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for the same refinery. BJP has revoked the previous MoU and has made a new one of the refinery. This is the reason why politics is ‘hot’ on the centre point i.e. refinery. Refuting the tweet of Gehlot, BJP state president said that Gehlot Sahab or anyone should not worry about the code of conduct.BJP will not do any work in violation of the Code of Conduct. The refinery has been discussed with the EC for the foundation ceremony.Gehlot also tweeted about the refinery’s ‘twice’ foundation laying ceremony. In response, Parnami said that Gehlot himself did the refinery MoU in a hurry. In this MoU, people of the state were burdened with Rs40 thousand crore. If interest of 30 years of Rs40 thousand crore is added, then this figure becomes Rs1 lakh 54 thousand crore. Gehlot should thank CM Raje to free the state from this burden. The verbal turn During the last Ashok Gehlot government, Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for the same refinery. BJP has revoked the previous MoU and has made a new one of the refinery. This is the reason why politics is ‘hot’ on the centre point i.e. refinery. Jaish-e-Mohammad’s ‘commander’ Noor Tantray killed in Pulawama wanted to join BJP in 2003 to eliminate top brass

Noor Mohammad Tantray, the ‘midget’ terrorist killed in Pulwama encounter on Tuesday, wanted to join the BJP to eliminate its top leaders way back in 2003.Also known as Peer Baba, the four-feet-tall Kashmir chief of Jaish-e-Mohammad even went to the BJP headquarters at 11 Ashoka Raod in New Delhi. He managed to get a form to get himself registered as an active member, snoop on the leaders and attack them, a plan that never materialised. Before he could have succeed in his conspiracy, the Anti-Terror Unit of Delhi Police’s Special Cell, then headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand nabbed him and his associates from Delhi with huge cache of arms and ammunition.Tantray also went by the name Gulzar Ahmed Bhat or Uwais was a resident of Darganjgund in Pulwama’s Tral area and was arrested in Delhi in August, 2003.“Tantray was a member of JeM, a terrorist organisation banned under Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002 and was arrested for entering into a criminal conspiracy with four others (Rashid, Mohd Sahid, Habeeb and Khurshid Ahmed Butt, all said four others having since been killed in different encounters with security forces), to commit terrorist acts and wage war against India,” Chand told DNA.He was convicted in 2011 for life. He was languishing in Tihar Jail and was out on a parole since 2015 and thereafter started reviving the JeM in south and central Kashmir. In 2003, on August 29, the Special Cell received an intelligence inputs about Jaish terrorists being engaged in supply of arms, ammunition and explosive material transported in wooden boxes of fruits and vegetables by trucks from Kashmir to Delhi. The vehicles were also used to take back Hawala money from Delhi to Kashmir for being used for terrorist activities. On a specific information about a truck bearing registration number “153” of Jammu and Kashmir having reached Delhi with certain quantity of arms, ammunitions and explosives, efforts were made through a team headed by then Sub Inspector Govind Sharma, who is now Assistant Commissioner of Police, to locate the vehicle. It was learnt that truck bearing number JK-03-0153 had actually entered the fruit market in Delhi’s Azadpur at 10:55 pm on August 28, 2003. Since the truck could not be located in the market, extensive search was launched in surrounding areas. On August 30, 2003, at about 2.00 pm, then Sub Inspector Umesh Barthwal is said to have located the said truck parked in Qutub Road parking lot. A police officers comprising, amongst others, of then Inspector Hriday Bhushan was deployed to keep a watch over the truck in secrecy. At about 7.45 pm a short statured person later identified as accused Noor Mohd Tantray was seen approaching the truck and having a talk with the driver who was later identified as accused Parvez Ahmed Mir and cleaner later identified as accused Farooz Ahmed respectively of the truck.Tantray along with other two boarded the truck, thereafter three wooden boxes kept in the tool box were taken out. Race for next CS begins in power corridor

Hunt for new chief secretary has intensified as Ashok Jain is left to serve only a week the topmost post until December 31. The power corridor in chief minister office (CMO) is mulling ACS (forest) NC Goel, ACS (Finance) DB Gupta, ACS (Administrative Reforms) Vipin Chandra Sharma and ACS and director general (HCM, RIPA) Gurjot Kaur, the second senior most IAS, for the coveted post.A Hamlet-like situation of ‘To be or Not to be’ is posed before the state government, seriously, this time in the selection of the bureaucrat for chief secretary post. Goel, an 82 batch officer, who was considered for the top office twice, emerges a sublime choice in the race. Albeit, his selection comes with a question- why the government would appoint a bureaucrat who will get retired just four months in April end. This question fades in the light of the appointment of current Jain who served the post merely for six months, though. In terms of tenure, efficiency and proximity to the power center of the CMO, an 83 batch officer Gupta come up in the list of probables with more strength. With ample time as his service would terminate by September 2020, Gupta is currently looking affairs of the state’s finance under CM Vasundhara Raje. In last four years of Raje government, he held most important offices- UDH, PWD, Infrastructure, Energy and PHED which reflects his CV stamped with the trust of Raje. Despite being a top choice for important assignments, a but is quite obvious- why he was not preferred when Raje appointed Jain and OP Mina as CS in last one and half year.If the track of Raje government is seen in the appointment of chief secretary, it is quite clear not superseding the seniority unlike the selection for DGP. OP Mina and current CS Jain had grabbed the post to this seniority parameter along with caste equation. So, if the parameter is adhered then Kaur may be emerged as the dark horse. She, an 81 batch office, stands at second place in the seniority (excluding CS Jain), much ahead to Gupta and Goel, both. Ashok Shekhar, currently posted as chairman of Indira Gandhi Nahar Board, is at the top in the seniority, though. Both top senior-most officers may be in the race with fewer chances until a theory is answered- why they were kept out of the secretariat. Generally, it is a trend that some senior officer occupy berths in the power corridors of the secretariat. In a sudden development, the Raje government recently gave entry to Vipin Chandra Sharma, an 82 batch officer, in the secretariat while appointing him ACS (administrative reforms). He was given poor portfolios like Rajasthan foundation, minority affairs in past four years so far but his entry in the Secretariat once again has fueled speculation. He is at six position in the seniority tally and a batch junior to Rajhans Upadhyay, who is currently ACS (education). Sharma will get retired in March 2018, though. PROBABLESThe power corridor in chief minister office (CMO) is mulling ACS (forest) NC Goel, ACS (Finance) DB Gupta, ACS (Administrative Reforms) Vipin Chandra Sharma and ACS and director general (HCM, RIPA) Gurjot Kaur, the second senior most IAS, for the coveted post.

2 held for Robert Vadra-linked Bikaner land scam case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) took into custody two persons, one of them with connections to Skylight Hospitality, a company linked to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra, in the Bikaner 374 hectare land scam case on Friday. The two persons — Jaiprakash Bagarwa and Ashok Kumar — were arrested from Kolayat in Bikaner late on Thursday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The land scam case was registered in 2015. Confirming the arrests, sources in the ED said Ashok Kumar is a close associate of Mahesh Nagar the authorised representative of Skylight Hospitality that purchased 69.55 hectares of land for Rs 72 lakh.It then sold it for Rs 5.15 crore to Allegeny Finlease, earning massive profits. Bagarwa and Kumar allegedly knew about the fraudulent nature of the land deals. Kumar is also an accused in cases filed by the Rajasthan government. The duo were first taken to the PMLA court where the judge was absent and hence were further referred to a special court. The ED told the court that the two had not been cooperating with the investigators despite being served with several notices. It sought a 10-day remand, but the court granted them eight days’ custody, till December 30.The ED also told the court that the two have the power of attorney of many lands whose ownership is being investigated. Many lands have been transferred several times to many fictitious persons. Many people who have supposedly bought the lands do not have the financial status to do so, the agency informed the court. It also said that in many cases, money had been transferred many months and, in some cases, several years before the transfer of titles. In 2015, the ED registered a case under the PMLA after taking cognizance of an FIR lodged by a local tehsildar on alleged forgery. The agency also attached assets worth Rs 1.18 crore belonging to government employees. The ED had issued notices to the firm associated with Vadra, but had not mentioned Vadra or any company associated with him in the FIR.The Rajasthan government had in January 2015 cancelled the mutation (transfer of land) of 374.44 hectares of land, after the revenue department claimed to have found fraudulent allotments in the name of illegal persons. The case filed by the Rajasthan government relates to the land across 34 villages of Bikaner that was to be given to persons whose land was acquired for the expansion of Army’s firing range. Instead of the beneficiaries, the land was grabbed by illegal persons through forged documents. This was then purchased by firms linked to Vadra and later sold at huge profit.

BJP toes Congress line of caste-niti

Accusing Congress of resorting to caste politics in recently concluded assembly elections at Gujarat, the BJP itself seems to have learned lesson of the same. Ahead of by-elections scheduled at Rajasthan BJP has begun to strengthen its caste cadre and focus on the new voters at the state. Party’s organisation secretary, P Chandrashekhar on Thursday took a session at party state headquarters at Jaipur on its proposed ‘Nav- Matdata Abhiyan’ aimed to increase association of young voters.A day earlier Chandrashekhar along with party state president Ashok Parnami has held a session of the Dalit public representatives of the party. The party at Rajasthan has divided its legislators into caste base categories and tends to assign them a responsibility to ensure support from their respective community. “The meeting of Dalit MLA’s was first in the sequence, we will be soon holding similar meetings of public representatives of other castes,” BJP state president Ashok Parnami briefed on the party plans. BJP at Gujarat was unable to keep intact the ‘Hindu’ votes as several caste swung towards Congress, it also suffered a decline in the share of young voters below 25 years of age. Thus as the responsibility of caste votes is handed over to MLAs of the respective caste, the task to associate young voters has been assigned to the party’s youth wing, Yuva Morcha. On Thursday, BJP’s state organising secretary Chandrashekhar attended a workshop of the Yuva Morcha along with state general secretary Bhajanlal Sharma and state Yuva Morcha president Ashok Saini. Here the participants were briefed on the campaign by a trainer from Delhi. “The nav-metadata program is being launched on instructions of the central leadership and will cover all universities and colleges of the state,” said Bhajanalal Sharma. It is, however, the backward caste votes that remain a major concern for the party. Vote bank Dalits are estimated around 20% of total voters were traditionally Congress supporters but switched sides in the last y elections. Ajmer and Alwar where by-elections where dalit voters hold the key, which is why BJP has given prominence place to their leaders in party like Kalisah Meghwal.

Amar Singh for action against Jet Airways

In the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament on Tuesday, Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh raised the issue of aircraft safety, especially in Jet Airways, and sought answers from Union Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju. At about 5 pm, Singh called the issue to attention and said, “I would like to draw the attention of the House to the functioning of Jet Airways aircraft. Lately, they have been involved in several incidents of ground collision, tail strike, reports of pilots coming in late for duty, inordinate delays in flights, and in general, causing great inconvenience to passengers.” He added that these instances had often been reported in press, but no action had been taken against the management. “Attention is also invited to the audit report of United Nations aviation watchdog, which has placed our country’s aviation sector in the list of its 13 worst performing nations. This has been ruinous to the country’s aviation sector image, so I request the minister to inform the House about the remedial steps taken in the matter against Jet Airways and their management.”

Gujarat ki goonj Rajasthan mein..

Gujarat touches 6 districts in Rajasthan. But it’s poll results will have impact on the entire state. A slim win in Modi’s bastion has sent warning bells ringing for BJP in Rajasthan. As the Raje government enters into the fifth year, Congress, post ‘moral victory’ in Gujarat, will go all out to oust the ruling party.Raje, on the other hand, has a tough task to counter anti incumbency factor while setting off on last minute development work for the public. Her immediate challenge is to win three byelections – one for assembly and the other two for parliament- which would disturb the tempo of Congress after its fighting performance in Gujarat.“If she is able to register wins in these elections, Congress will lose the edge which it has got after Gujarat elections. Also, it will send a message to high command that Raje holds the key for BJP in Rajasthan,” said a senior BJP leader. After facing tough fight in Gujarat, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah may change their strategy in coming state polls. They are said to keep complete control over ticket distribution in elections.“Now the duo may consider feedback of chief ministers and party chiefs of respective states in assembly elections lined up in 2018. This imminent flexibility may work well for BJP,” he said. For Congress, it is the golden chance to revive its fortune. The growing confidence and stature of Rahul Gandhi will imbibe confidence in his close aide Sachin Pilot also. After Ashok Gehlot proving his mettle in Gujarat elections, it is now up to Pilot to outsmart the strategies of the former chief minister, which foxed BJP in Gujarat.“Gujarat victory is morale booster for Congress, but Pilot will be under pressure. He is yet to showcase his leadership capabilities. With Gehlot winning crucial brownie points from Congress President, victory in by elections is the least Pilot needs to prove his point,” said a Congress leader.

SC suggests series of measures to remove hurdles for disabled at public places

The Supreme Court today suggested a series of measures required to be taken by the state authorities for removing obstacles which prevent differently- abled persons from accessing public places in the country.A bench comprising justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan referred to the provisions of the Disability Act, 1995 and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and noted the measures which were needed for its effective implementation. The apex court said that gates to public places should be made by incorporating necessary accessible standards and they must be made wide enough to allow wheelchairs to pass or turn around easily.”At places like airports, railway stations etc passengers must be clearly informed about the details of their flight/train such as the gate number for boarding etc via public announcement systems (this practice is, surprisingly, gradually declining),” the bench noted in its verdict. It said that a minimum of three to five parking spaces near the entrance of a public place must be reserved for persons with disabilities and should be clearly indicated by showing the international symbol for disability — the wheelchair symbol.”All unnecessary obstructions must be removed, and all access ways must be well lit. Moreover, clear signposts, along with their Braille equivalents should be put up,” it said, adding, “Elevators must have clear Braille signs and auditory feedback. The buttons of elevators must be accessible from a wheelchair.” The bench said that pictograms must be put up near elevators and other important places such as toilets and employees working at public places must be provided necessary training to enable them to understand the unique set of challenges that persons with disabilities face.”Wheelchairs and mobility scooters should be available at every public place,” the court said. The top court emphasised on the need to provide proper and safe access to roads, transport, buildings and public places to differently abled persons. “It is a well-known fact that persons with visually impaired disability, with which we are concerned, represent far more ‘vulnerable section of society’ and ‘at-risk cases’ vis-a-vis their present surroundings which also becomes evident from the well-known fact that insurance companies charge a higher premium on insurance policies extended to the visually disabled as compared to the other persons,” it said.

Big Q on sarkari schemes raises brows

One may find controversy in everything if the intent is inquisitive. And that is what happened on Thursday after questions regarding various plans of the Centre and the state government were asked to students in an examination regarding “Samajopyogi Yojnain”(Social beneficiary Schemes). This question paper was meant for the half-yearly examinations which is currently underway in government schools across the state. Fifteen out of 17 questions were related to the plans of the Central and State Government in the paper.Questions related to the Modi government’s flagship scheme Swachh Bharat Mission, Make in India, Prime Minister Skill Development Scheme were asked. Similarly, the state government’s flagship scheme were also included in the question of Chief Minister’s Jal Swavalamban Scheme and Bhamashah Yojana. In this paper, only questions related to the plans of Modi and the Raje government were put forth. The paper did not include questions related to any scheme of the UPA government and the Ashok Gehlot government. After the examination, the question paper was posted on social media for the usual banters and barbs.Congress stood in opposition to this paper. Expressing concern over the move of the Education Department, Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, President of Jaipur District Congress Committee, said, “There is no achievement of the State Government. Education is being politicised. This is how the government wants the students to ‘know’ about the current schemes.”Congress, he said, will take every possible step against this “Bhajpaikarn” of education.Several teahcers who spoke on condition of anonymity also condemned such a move but could not come out in the open due to occupational hazards. It may be noted that this question paper was made available to the DNA by one such teahcer.“The name of the subject itself is social schemes. Hence the questions of the Central and State Government schemes were included in it. This will enable students to get an overview of the schemes when they study about it and hence be capable of utilising the same to their own benefits,” Daya Shankar, District Education Officer(Secondary), Bikaner. Tough nut to crack? This question paper was meant for the half-yearly examinations which is currently underway in government schools across the state. Fifteen out of 17 questions were related to the plans of the Central and State Government. The state government’s flagship scheme were also included in the question paper.

The flight also had minister for civil aviation P Ashok Gajapat Raju as one of the passengers. As per reports, the Air India flight AI459 from Delhi to Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh with over 100 passengers, including minister of civil aviation P Ashok Gajapat Raju, was delayed by 90 minutes after four staff members, including the pilot were delayed in arriving to Delhi airport.According to Air India spokesperson GP Rao, the passengers protested and questioned the minister over the delay. “The Minister then asked Air India CMD Pradeep Kharola for the reason behind the delay,” Rao added. Also readDGCA probing flying of Air India aircraft with dent, 3 derosteredThe three staff members have been suspended, while the captain, who arrived 15 minutes late, was issued a warning, a spokesperson for the national carrier informed the media.According to media reports, poor visibility also played a role in delaying the flight. The airline’s operational team then decided to wait for the weather to improve, but failed to inform the ground staff that had already begun the boarding procedure for passengers. Also readNew Air India chief likely to assume charge this weekThe flight was delayed even more when the pilot was reportedly stopped at the security check over a problem with his airport pass, according to an NDTV report.Interestingly, Kharola, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, took charge as Air India’s Chairman and Managing Director on Monday. He is helming the airline at a time the government has started the process for its strategic disinvestment. The delay in flight has not been the ideal start to the new job.Battling multiple headwinds, the disinvestment-bound airline has been working on ways to reduce its debt, including by way of selling non-core assets and expanding operations. The source said the airline has received Rs 1,500 crore loan from Bank of India after the tender for the amount was floated last month in order to meet “urgent” working capital needs.A tender was issued by the carrier on October 18 in which it had sought government guarantee-backed short-term loans totalling up to Rs 1,500 crore to meet “its urgent working capital requirements”.Prior to that, the airline had borrowed around Rs 3,250 crore as short tenure loans from two lenders — IndusInd Bank and Punjab National Bank, sources had said. Supreme Court to pass orders on disable friendly educational institutes

The Supreme Court today said it will pass order on a plea seeking to make higher education institutions physically accessible for disabled students.A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said that it will pass certain directions on the issue and give some time for its compliance. The bench was hearing a plea filed by an organisation Disabled Rights Group in 2006, espousing the cause of a disabled girl who is 100 per cent wheelchair bound. The girl, who wanted to study law, could not study at the National Law University and managed to gain admission in a private university.Counsel for the petitioner organisation said the college at the private university does not have facilities for disabled students despite a law which mandates provision of facilities to such students.”She was made to stay in a hostel in a shared room with two other normal students, the bathroom did not have a ramp and there was no escort facility in the hostel for such students,” he said.He said Persons for Disabilities(Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995, provided certain guidelines to be followed, which were not adhered to by higher education institutes. The bench said three per cent reservation provided under the law is now being followed by the educational institutions.”There is no tracking or monitoring whether these institutes are providing reservation or not to the disabled students. There is no reporting mechanism for the institutes,” the counsel said. The bench then outlined three issues– provision of reservation in higher educational institutions for disabled, all educational institutions being made physically accessible for disabled students and the scope of several provisions of the Act.”We will pass order with regard to these issues,” the bench said.

DNA THEME: Rajasthan Goonj in Gujarat

Gujarat polls will soon come to an end; phase one of the polls is over and as dates for the second phase draw closer, there is a mad scramble among the politicians of Rajasthan to reach the neighbouring state and be seen campaigning. This urge to temporarily move westwards is equally palpable in Congress and the BJP. This is probably the first time that Rajasthani politicians have descended in such large numbers to campaign in Gujarat. If one were to think that the khadi brigade is going all out to ensure victory for their respective parties; reconsider it. Gujarat elections are the easy and timely means Rajasthan politicians can use to pave smoother paths for themselves in the Assembly polls slated to be held next year. What makes Gujarat elections more important for the politicos of Rajasthan is the spiced up fight due to the presence of Rahul Gandhi and first time not having Narendra Modi as rallying point. Claims to contributing towards a win would surely go a long way. From BJP, ministers from the centre and state along with MPs, MLAs and party functionaries are keen to walk the extra mile to escort candidates filing nominations, for campaigning in rallies and are even going door-to-door to distribute voter slips. According to a BJP leader who did not wish to be named, “These elections are vital and party president Amit Shah is closely monitoring them. His is the best opportunity to mark one’s presence.”For Congress, the Rajasthan connect gets stronger as former CM Ashok Gehlot, a maverick politician is the closest aide Rahul Gandhi has kept all through the campaign. Rajasthan PCC chief Sachin Pilot too pitched his weight in the campaign. The grand old party has sent present and former MLAs, former MPs and senior functionaries. Also they have focused on calling leaders from Bikaner, Jodhpur and tribal districts of Mewar to tap the locals settled in Gujarat.WHAT THEY HOPE TO REAPIt would not be incorrect to say that political battles of Rajasthan are being fought on Gujarat turf. The battles are for supremacy over rivals, gaining favour of party supremos and most importantly to use the time and effort invested to reap political security and favours for themselves next year. Winning has its own pleasures, but irrespective of which party wins or loses Gujarat, the Rajasthanis are fighting a totally different battle.POLITICIANS FROM BJPOm Mathur Ashok Parnami Gulab Chand Kataria Kiran Maheshwari Om Birla CP Joshi Gajendra Singh PP Choudhry CR Choudhry Ramcharan Bohra Arun Chaturvedi Devji Patel Rajendra Rathore Mohanlal Gupta Bhajan Lal Sharma POLITICIANS FROM CONGRESSAshok Gehlot- Former CM Sachin Pilot – PCC chief Rameshwar Dudi- Leader of Opposition Govind Dotasra – chief whip Rajkumar Sharma – Former minister B D Kalla – Former minister & PCC Chief Dr Chandrabhan- Former minister & PCC Chief Mahendra Jeet Malviya – Former minister Rajendra Pareek- Former minister Ashok Chandna- MLA Dheeraj Gurjar- MLA Bhanwar Singh Bhati- MLA Darshan Singh- MLA Mevaram Jain- MLA Jakir Hussain- Former MLA

Gujarat Elections 2017 | Congress confident of repeating Nanded victory

While opinion polls have predicted a down to the wire fight, Congress leaders in Gujarat are confident of repeating the Nanded victory by getting the anti-incumbency votes to them rather than fragmenting those votes amongst independent candidatesSenior Congress leader Ashok Chavan, who is also the president of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, said the BJP wants to divide the anti-incumbency votes amongst smaller parties and independent candidates. “Voters are shrewd. The BJP had used the same pattern in Nanded, but people voted Congress and rejected the MIM, NCP and the Shiv Sena. As a result, we won 71 out of 81 seats,” he told DNA.Atul Londe, MPCC spokesperson who is also in-charge of Surat district for Gujarat elections said that out of 14 seats in Surat, they are hopeful of getting at least eight seats this time. Londe has been camped in Gujarat for last two months. Also readGujarat Elections 2017 | Unlike PM Modi, I can err, says Rahul GandhiHe said that there is dissatisfaction across the sections against the BJP government in Gujarat. “People had already made up their mind to ouster the BJP. Congress is credible options for them therefore we are expecting the total seats not less than 120 out of 182. One thing we have to understand, Gujarat is mainly business community and demonetization and GST had hampered their business. Many people are become bankrupt and jobless. So these people will never vote BJP,” said Londe confidently.

Beed residents crowd-fund for constable’s sex-change surgery

Residents of Beed have come together to crowd fund for Beed constable Lalita Salve’s sex reassignment surgery (SRS). According to Salve’s relatives, they are yet to receive the medical test report from the hospital but the residents of Beed have already started pouring help for her.In order to reduce her financial burden for the SRS operation she is aiming to undergo, the community members, relatives, neighbors, and local political workers have came forward to help her financially.Arjun Ujgire, uncle of Salve, said, “We don’t know what will be the cost of the surgery but as per our knowledge it will be in lakhs of rupees. Approximately Rs 40,000-50,000 cash has been crowd-funded so far without the family asking for any financial help from anybody.”While Salve underwent medical test on Monday, the medical reports were submitted to the dean of JJ Hospital on Tuesday which will later be forwarded to the state’s home department. Doctors at JJ Hospital opine that she should undergo a corrective surgery.Salve’s ultrasound revealed absence of ovaries, fallopian tube, breasts and mammary glands. Dr Ashok Anand, head of Gynecology Department at JJ Hospital, said, “She had undergone a test earlier in 2016. Genetically she was a male but she was behaving like a female. If she wants to be a male, there is no harm in it.”“We are happy to see the support from Beed residents. The operation will be done in Mumbai and preferably at the state government’s JJ Hospital,” said Salve’s uncle.

Party time for young turks in the Grand Old Party

Young turks of Congress are waiting with bated breath as Vice President Rahul Gandhi readies for the much awaited elevation to helm the grand old party. Rajasthan state Congress chief Sachin Pilot and Guna MP Jyotiraditya Scindia (nephew of CM Vasundhara Raje), both believed to be close friends of Rahul Gandhi are likely to gain the most. Other bright young leaders of ‘Rahul gang’- RPN Singh, Ramya, Jitin Prasada and Milind Deora – too would be gainfully placed in the scheme of things. But all eyes will be on the turn of event in Rajasthan state Congress post Rahul’s coronation. The new Congress president may have to take a decision soon on leadership of Rajasthan state Congress before the state goes for polls. He will have to pick between his close aide and young party face Sachin Pilot and the tried and tested political acumen of former chief minister Ashok Gehlot who wields considerable clout cutting across the castes and community in Rajasthan. Keeping in mind Rahul’s new found chemistry with Ashok Gehlot in Gujarat, it will be one of the toughest calls for him.Sachin Pilot, who is at the helm in state for close to four years have mobilised the party and infused enthusiasm and new energy after the severe drubbing in the last assembly elections.Situation would have been easier for Rahul had Gehlot been not given the responsibility of Gujarat elections. The Gandhi scion is making ‘meaningful noise’ in his election campaign in Gujarat. His change in stand to include ‘Soft Hindutva’ in electoral strategy is countering BJP’s age-old stance on Hindu and Hindutva. And the credit for weaving the web goes to the old war horse Ashok Gehlot, who is believed to be close to his mother Sonia Gandhi. On his electoral campaign, Rahul, who is not known to back Gehlot, have gelled well with the old guard. The duo is now giving tough fight to incumbent BJP which is riding on the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Strategies and working style of Gehlot has impressed the young Gandhi and the former chief minister is back in the reckoning. While young faces are likely to get more prominence in the Congress’ organisational line-up post Rahul’s elevation, the old guard is unlikely to be dismissed entirely.“Most of the old timers are Sonia’s loyalists who have supported the family when Rahul was not in the political scene. It won’t be easy for him to complete ignore their contribution when Sonia Gandhi is believed to take up a ‘margdarshak’ role in the party,” says a senior Congress leader. This also looks certain as Congress posed its trust in old timers like Capt. Amarinder Singh in Punjab elections and later on Virbhadra Singh in Himachal despite the non-concurrence from its vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Time for Ashok Parnami to attend to his home turf

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>With just one year left for the assembly election, state BJP president Ashok Parnami is now keen to put his house in order. Of late, he is paying more attention to his constituency, Adarsh Nagar.Apart from attending people’s problems and trying to resolve them, Parnami has started ‘chai pe charcha’.From the beginning, Adarsh Nagar has been a tough constituency for the candidates particularly for the BJP, as it has a sizeable number of minority voters. After delimitation, the Congress was convinced of winning this seat.Considering it an easy seat, Congress stalwart Mahir Azad put his foot down to contest from here. However, it turned out to be a huge miscalculation by Azad who had won from Jhunjhunu in the past. The BJP fielded Parnami who was contesting his maiden assembly election. Parnami belongs to Punjabi community and was mayor of Jaipur yet no one had thought that he would win. The betting market gave him no ‘bhav’. His party leaders were even less confident. However, Parnami contrary to popular belief, turned out to be a giant killer. Not just that, he retained the seat in the next assembly election in 2013 but this also raised his political stock as he was chosen to head the party. But, since then he has been unable to give proper time to his constituency, which has been the key factor in his victories. Therefore, Parnami is now taking no chances and testing himself on the tasks he had assigned to other MLAs. Ashok Parnami is active in Jaipur politics for the last 25 years. It wasn’t an easy journey from a ward councillor to the MLA. He got MLA’s ticket on the basis of his splendid work as the mayor and now as a state president he is playing a successful political innings. Solanki described Parsottam Solanki as an elder brother, and attributed his decision to return to the BJP to Congress’s plan to divide the Koli community votes.”The Congress wanted to pit me against Parsottam Solanki, who is a top leader of our community, and also like my elder brother. I have rejected the offer. I have been working with him for 20 years, and it was natural that I would not be ready to fight against him,” Solanki said.Solanki also claimed that he had taken the decision to join Congress in an impulsive manner, and had been convinced by community leaders to rejoin the BJP. The move, seen as a blow to Congress, once again changes equations in Bhavnagar, which sends key political figures such as Parsottam Solanki, state BJP chief Jitu Vaghani and senior Congress MLA Shaktisinh Gohil to the assembly.

Global citizen Priyanka Chopra eligible to vote in upcoming UP civic polls

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>She might have left this town some 17 years ago after winning the Miss World title, but Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra is still a voter in Bareilly and eligible to exercise her franchise for the upcoming urban local body polls. The names of Priyanka Chopra and her mother Madhu Chopra are present in the voters list and recently a complaint in this regard was filed by a resident of Kuwarpur here. When the names of the actor and her mother were included in the voters list of Mumbai, where the family shifted, her father late Col Ashok Chopra had informed the district administration about it through a letter in 2012, but their names were not deleted, officials said.Additional district election officer Abhijit Mukherji said that since the actor no longer lived in the city and her house near the city railway station has been locked for long, a report was sought from the block level officer. Mukherji said that a survey is conducted before each election to check for duplication of names of voters who have shifted elsewhere.”It was perhaps by mistake on the part of the block level officer concerned, who prepared the fresh electoral rolls for this election. We will take action against those responsible for this error,” he said. District election officer R Vikram Singh said the names of persons not living in the town for long should not be in the voters list. It is also a matter of investigation as to how her name appeared in the list, he said.

Churchgate taxi traffic issue solved

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The taxi menace outside Churchgate station has been taken care of by traffic police. They have regulated the movement of taxis and even BEST buses, which, for long, has been causing congestion outside the rail premises. Over the last few days, there have been red colour barricades placed on the road, meant to segregate flow of traffic. The presence of barricades might sound negligible, but in the morning and evening, when people rush to Churchgate station, this has brought respite. There is proper segregation of vehicular traffic unlike previously when traffic jams and chaos prevailed. The black and yellow taxis would park haphazardly on road, creating two or three parking lines. These cabs don’t move until they get a passenger, which causes a traffic nightmare. There is also a share-a-taxi stand which augments the problem on road. Drivers queue up till the bus stops, which make it difficult for the BEST buses.”We have been doing whatever possible to ease traffic on the roads,” said Ashok Dudhe, DCP Traffic (City). Now, ever since these barricades have been placed, the black and yellow taxis have been asked to drop passengers and move ahead without stopping. Buses find it easier to come all the way till the bus stops there and move forward towards Marine Lines.Sources from Western Railways said that this is part of the whole plan to ease congestion outside railway stations. The multi-disciplinary audit teams have suggested this to create space outside stations for free movement of people. “It has been found that people are forced to unnecessarily wait at bus stops, which creates more crowd at station premises,” said a WR official.NEW FOBMeanwhile, the Army and Railway authorities began preliminary work at Elphinstone Road. They began taking measurements for the new foot over-bridge (FOB) that will be extended from the existing Parel FOB. This 3.5-m wide FOB will have to cross seven rail lines and is expected to be ready by January 31.

Mayor ‘gets it Right’ as groups hail

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Members of several right wing groups joined chorus with mayor Ashok Lahoti at the recital of Vande Matram at Jaipur Municipal Corporation on Wednesday evening. Holding the Tricolour and raising slogans these had arrived at the municipal corporation headquarters to commemorate the saffron party mayor for his recent ‘nationalistic’ dictate. It is on orders of mayor Ashok Lahoti, that from Tuesday work at JMC offices commences with recital of National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana and concludes with singing National Song, Vande Matram. His order has arrived as a delight for the right wing groups and they registered their support in person by joining in tunes at JMC on Wednesday evening. However, as they decked him with garlands and flowers, mayor Ashok Lahoti said it was not an objective of his decision. “No, I am not looking for political mileage on the issue, it was just meant to promote nationalistic sentiment,” Lahoti told DNA surrounded amid the supporters greeting him over the decision.“I have stepped out of the JMC building to accept their greetings as I do not wish their celebrations to create a political fuss at the corporation,” he added. The issue though has already attracted a lot of political attention, much also due to his ‘go to Pakistan’ jibe for those reluctant to recite “Vande Matram”. “I have been misquoted by those seeking to build controversy out of nothing, it was meant to answer a specific question and was not to target any specific group or community,” Lahoti clarifies.

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Talking of Smart City, the municipal corporation and development authority at Jaipur are busy outsmarting each other. Development of city remains at collateral as the two civic bodies indulge in a long drawn discussion on pending dues. The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has rolled out huge outstanding against the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) pertaining to several transactions. An outstanding of more than Rs 1,350 crore make JDA the biggest defaulter at municipal audit books.According to the municipal corporation a part of the amount is relatively new while part of it has piled over past several decades.“The JDA is liable to pay JMC a percentage in royalty on all revenue generated from auction of property within the urban areas. However, this has never been paid by JDA and the total due amount under this head stands to Rs 536 crore,” says mayor Ashok Lahoti. “In addition the authority has also transferred over 700 colonies to JMC this year and is liable to pay JMC for development works at these,” he adds.An impact of these unpaid dues on JMC performance can be assessed from the fact that the outstanding is nearly equal to total annual revenue receipt of the corporation. Amazingly the issue continues despite BJP being in power, both, at state government and municipal corporation. The present mayor has raised the issue at various levels and even written to the urban development minister nearly six months ago. Progress in the direction, however, has been negligible.“A meeting presided by the urban development minister decided upon the issue being solved by mutual discussions between the two bodies, if the JMC wants they must take initiative for the talks being held,” a senior officer at Urban Development Department, puts the ball in JMC’s court. The municipal corporation though refutes the charge. “It has been decided that JDA will pay Rs 70 crore to JMC against the fire cess collected from developers, despite orders from the urban development minister, JDA continues to delay the payment,” says a JMC official. There also exist differences in log books of the two sides, the JDA claims to have spent a couple of hundred crores in development works on behalf of JMC, this also is unacceptable to the latter. The corporation denies to have issued any consent for these claimed expenses made by JDA. “Our audit department has rejected the accounts submitted by JDA, we have now asked them to come up with a detailed balance sheet for the same,” says a JMC officer. The last meeting between the JDA and JMC was held more than a month ago and since the talks have been on hold.Liability BytesThe JDA is collecting Rs 100 per sq meter as fire cess on buildings taller than 15ft and not paying it to JMCThe JMC is entitled to receive 15 per cent revenue from auction of government properties in the urban limits of Jaipur. Nitin Gadkari urges automobile makers to use coastal shipping to transport vehicles

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday flagged off export of Ashok Leyland trucks by coastal route to Bangladesh, and appealed to automobile manufacturers to opt for coastal shipping mode to transport vehicles.Transportation by road was costly and would pollute the environment even as there was the risk of accidents, the Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways said.”That is the reason that we have decided to use waterways and coastal transport. This is going to reduce the cost, save time and at the same time will be very good for environment.” “I appeal to all automobile manufacturers to use waterways for transporting their automobiles,” he said over video conferencing from Nagpur.Earlier, he flagged off auto major Ashok Leyland’s consignment of 185 trucks transported through the roll-on roll-off (RoRo) coastal movement from Chennai Port to Mongla Port in Bangladesh. He recalled that India had signed a coastal shipping agreement with Bangladesh during Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s 2015 visit there.RoRo service was already happening between Chennai and Kochi and Kochi to Kandla and “this is a great example which is going to inspire and motivate all automobile manufacturers,” Gadkari added.Minister for State for Shipping and Road Transport, Pon Radhakrishnan said export of trucks by Ashok Leyland by sea route to Bangladesh would reduce the time by about 15-20 days as it takes only five days to reach the destination by sea.The benefits include avoiding pollution and possible accidents, the Minister, present at the Chennai Port, added.Ashok Leyland Managing Director Vinod K Dasari said the company had been exporting trucks to Bangladesh for 40 years using the road route and added that various issues, including congestion at the border and delay in crossing it had prompted them to think of an alternative following which the government suggested the sea route.”We do about 5,000 vehicles per year for Bangladesh. This is the first lot of 185 vehicles (through RoRo) and hopefully we continue to do more and use this as a route rather than the long (road) route,” he said. The cost-wise benefits of opting for the sea route were still being worked out, he said, adding “I hope it is more profitable and if profitable we will do more.” Meanwhile, a government release said that following the 2015 agreement between the two countries, transportation from Indian ports to Bangladesh ports “is being treated as coastal movement, making it eligible for 40 per cent concession on vessel-related and cargo-related charges.” “For coastal movement through RoRo vessels, 80 per cent concession on vessel-related and cargo-related charges are applicable in Indian Ports,” it said.Chennai Port started coastal RoRo service in August 2016 when 800 Hyundai cars were shipped on RoRo vessels from Chennai to Pipavav in Gujarat for local distribution, it said.”Initiatives like this are aimed at providing innovative logistic chain solutions under Sagarmala. The ultimate objective is to save logistic costs and time of transportation and boosting trade by making Indian goods competitive in international markets,” it added.

Later, the altercation turned violent and Kumar slapped Bhola. This left him feeling insulted and led to the plan to murder Kumar.”Bhola contacted the other two and invited Kumar to a party and went for a drive after getting drunk on October 10. After a while, an argument broke out between them and Bhola shot Kumar in his head. Later, they dumped the body in Bawana’s canal and reported his missing report at Ashok Vihar along with the family,” Dumbere said.

25 years of a ‘public movement’ called Zee TV

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Twenty-five years ago, India’s first private channel Zee TV started as an “illegal” entity — “illegal” because there was no rule or law in the country then that could tackle such a revolution. It started a new era of entertainment in the country, metamorphosed into infotainment and later branched out into separate news and entertainment channels. In essence, Zee TV became a “public movement.”The journey, as many early employees of Zee recall, has been that of progress, growth and constant innovation. As Rajya Sabha member and Essel Group Chairman Dr Subhash Chandra puts it in his tweet — today the channel is a household name as “viewers have made this private channel a public movement with their love and support.” He added: “Reaching entertainment to the homes of people — with this conviction in my heart, I had made a start.”Today, Zee has become a global media giant offering entertainment, news and information to 1.3 billion people in 173 countries in 19 languages. The brand is present across news, broadcasting, movies, music, live entertainment, digital and talent businesses, both in India and overseas. Its entertainment wing has more than 240,000 hours of television content and houses the world’s largest Hindi film library with rights to more than 4,200 movie titles across various languages.Punit Goenka, MD & CEO, ZEEL, said: “25 years back, on this very day, our Chairman, Dr Subhash Chandra launched our nation’s first private satellite television channel. The launch of ZEE way back in 1992, sparked the evolution of not just a company, but an entire industry in itself.” Turn to P4Some of the finest and most successful talents of the country started as part of this Zee ‘revolution’. Union minister for Information and Broadcasting, Smriti Irani, was a stringer with Zee TV 23 years ago. Stating that the channel had helped many people make their dreams come true, Irani said, “I was like any other reporter who used to send news to Zee TV. This group has been really lucky for me. It has shown several programmes on television that transformed people’s lives in terms of entertainment. ‘Zee Antakshari’ made people listen to music, ‘Hum Paanch’ made people laugh and ‘Teen Bahuraaniyan’ made people cry.”The story of how Zee TV started is interesting. In January 1991, a well-known personality in the advertising world, Ashok Kurien, and Dr Subhash Chandra were watching CNN and decided that they wanted to get into satellite television. They spoke to senior managers at Li Ka Shing’s Hutchison Whampoa, then the owner of Asiasat 1, the only satellite broadcasting into India and China, to form an equally-owned venture. The proposal was to be presented to Richard Li (Li Ka-Shing’s son).In his remarkably candid memoir The Z Factor – My Journey as the Wrong Man at the Right Time, Dr Chandra describes what happened next: “It was on December 14 1991 when Ashok Kurien of Ambience ad agency and I reached Star TV’s office in Hong Kong. There were ten to twelve senior and junior executives in the room. Richard Li, head of Star TV, was not there. So we waited awhile. It was like waiting for the king to come in and give his blessings. Richard walked in suddenly and sat opposite me. ‘OK, Indian channel… Hindi channel. Where is the money in India?’ Richard was very dismissive. ‘I am not interested in a joint venture.’ Most of us in the room, including his executives, were shocked. It appeared that Richard had already made up his mind about the futility of the project. So I addressed him directly. ‘Mr Li, if you are not interested in the joint venture, can you consider leasing the satellite transponder to us?’ ‘There is no transponder available for less than $5 million per year,’ Richard said. It was a haughty statement to put me off.’ ‘That is fine. I will pay $5 million!’ It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I did not realize the implication of what I had said…”Dr Chandra insisted the deal had to be signed there and then. Li, however, made him wait for two hours before refusing. Dr Chandra came back and started talking to the Russians, who had a satellite stationed over India. Li was intrigued enough to come to India in 1992. He then met Dr Chandra who took him to the Essel Propack factory. Its sheer scale and size made Li change his mind. In May 1992 he signed a deal with Dr Chandra and on October 2, 1992 Zee went on air, two years after the principal ‘revolutionary’ of the ‘Zee revolution’ had actually thought about it.

He also did not go to Delhi on being summoned by party vice-president Rahul Gandhi for a meeting to discuss the crisis in Bihar after the collapse of the Grand Alliance. The Congress had dismissed the reports of a possible rift in the party’s Bihar unit, saying that such allegations are being made since the Janata Dal United (JDU) severed all ties with Mahagathbandhan.

Delhi High Court orders govt for info after newborn dies

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>A day after the death of a newborn girl child due to unavailability of beds at three major hospitals in the city, the Delhi High Court issued an order to the Health Department and Delhi government to make available the information regarding bed occupancy and other medical facilities online.A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari also took note of a report highlighting difficulties faced by patients on the facilities available in the hospitals.”Perhaps if this information was readily available to the family of the newborn, the life of the child may have been saved.”Given the availability of websites and internet connectivity, it would appear justified if all information in this regard especially the position of bed occupancy at a particular point of time is made available to the public at large especially, patients and their attendants, to obviate distress to them and also to ensure availability of the best medical assistance at the earliest,” the bench said.Activists lauded the bench’s decision stating that the newborn’s born was a violation of basic rights under the Constitution”This is a clear violation of the Article 21 — Right to Life. If this is the case in Delhi, then imagine what people are facing outside. Infant mortality is anyway an issue in India,” said Advocate and social activist Ashok Aggarwal.

"Development" missing from JMC general body meeting agenda

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>As usual General body meeting of Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Thursday is, likely to be stormy. It is highly unlikely that development or public related issues would be discussed in tomorrow’s meeting because the sole agenda for the meeting is sanitation system in the city. The last meeting too had similar agenda. So far, every general body meeting has remained inconclusive but this time not having development issue in the agenda is quite surprising. It’s been three years but projects taken up in the first two meetings are yet to take shape on ground.Notwithstanding the agenda, the councilors are expected to create ruckus over personal issues as they will have nothing else to discuss.Mayor Ashok Lahoty who was publicly rebuked by UDH minister Sri Chand Kriplani over poor sanitation system in the city is, likely to be target of not just opposition Congress councilors but from his own party members. It’s been nine months but he has failed to constitute committees, which is a major cause of dissent among BJP councilors. On the other hand, the Congress held a meeting to discuss issues to corner the Mayor and came up routine issues like poor sanitation, street light and sewer system. However, the Mayor has cited code of conduct as reason for not having development issues on the agenda. “There is election in ward 76. The state election commission has given permission to discuss only sanitation matter. Even Prime Minister and chief minister have focus on sanitation. This is main work of the JMC so we will discuss sanitation in the meeting,” Lahoty said.Unfortunately, every general body meeting of the JMC is being marred by pandemonium. the voters elected BJP board hoping that having same party at all levels of the government would iron out differences and expedite development work but so far they have been let down. Even the opposition seems to prefer ruckus over real issues.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Harishankar passed an order under exceptional circumstances and directed the SOL executive director to allow the youth to submit his admission application for BA (programme) course. “Considering the exceptional circumstances and that September 16 and 17 were holidays, we are of the view that Rishab Sharma deserves to be granted exception and should be permitted to apply for admission to BA course for the current academic year, if he applies within three days,” it said. The court’s directions come after Sangita Ashok, widow of Ashok Kumar Sharma, came to the court seeking help for the admission of her son. The denial of admission had pushed her son into depression, she had said. Meanwhile, the court also asked the woman whether she had seen the broken memorial of which she had shown the picture to the Acting Chief Justice. “Have you seen the memorial? <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Over 10 days after the brutal murder of a seven-year-old student within its premises, the Ryan International School in Gurugram re-opened on Monday, only to be shut again till September 25. There was heavy security deployment at the school to prevent any untoward incident. Confirming the report, Gurugram’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) Vinay Pratap Singh said:”The Ryan School in Bhondsi will be shut till Friday. Classes will resume on September 25. Safety concerns will be addressed till then.” Meanwhile, the accused in the case, bus conductor Ashok Kumar, was produced in the special POCSO court in Gurugram, along with the Ryan International Group’s northern zone head and Human Resource head. In the court, Kumar reiterated that he was forced to confess to the crime.”Ashok said he was being framed. He also told the judge that he was pressurised to sign the confession statement,” his lawyer Mohit Verma said.Earlier on Sunday, the victim’s parents vehemently opposed the re-opening of the school. “The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is yet to take charge of the probe and visit the crime place, as well as sanitise the school premises. At this stage, opening the school will not be a wise decision,” child’s father Varun Thakur said, adding that the re-opening of the school could lead to “tampering” of evidence. The DC, however, denied such claims and said: “The entire crime scene has already been sanitised.”Meanwhile, fear and anxiety continued to grip students and parents on Monday, with very few children turning up for classes.PINTO BAIL PLEAThree Ryan International School trustees submitted a fresh bail plea in Punjab and Haryana High Court, which will be heard on Tuesday
Founder Augustine Francis Pinto, Managing Director Grace Pinto, and their son, CEO Ryan Pinto had moved the Court on Saturday, but their anticipatory bail plea could not be admitted following the Court’s objections

Wholesale onion prices crash 50% in auction after I-T raids

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Wholesale onion rates at the Lasalgaon market went up for auction on Monday and prices crashed by over 50 percent. The auction started five days after Income Tax raids on seven biggest traders last week.According to traders at the Agriculture Produce Market Committees at Lasalgaon, Pimpalgaon and Vashi, onions were sold at Rs 800-Rs 1,200 per quintal as opposed to Rs 2,400-to-Rs 2600 per quintal ten days ago.”Total quantity of onion at Vashi APMC was 17,920 quintal on Monday. The rates were down by more than 50 percent on Monday. The old stocked onion will be disposed of by end of this month. From mid-October, there will be fresh stock,” said Ashok Walunje, an onion trader from Vashi.Traders had imported 300 containers from Egypt in a bid to get good rates. “Each container carried 12 tonnes of onion and cost traders Rs 16 per kg. Wholesalers were expecting to get margins of Rs 8 per kg at least, but the raids killed their hopes and they have been forced to sell at lower rates,” said a trader, requesting anonymity.”While rates crashing by 50 percent is good for a common man, it’s not really good for the farmer. We are not opposed to the government taking action against unscrupulous traders, but the farmers should not be made to suffer,” said Nanasaheb Patil, chairman, APMC, Lasalgaon.”Government has also listed the onion in the essential commodities list. If the government is really serious about controlling spiralling prices, it should offer minimum support price. Looking at the current input cost, it should have a MSP of Rs 2,000 per quintal,” Patil added.
