From terrorist stronghold Sopore, musical duo makes it to Bollywood

From the separatist stronghold of Sopore to the glitzy world of Bollywood, Kashmir’s first music composer duo has come a long way.Nayeem Ashraf, 28, and Shabir Ahmad, 30 — who go by the name Nayeem-Shabir in the world of music — have created a place in Bollywood after struggling hard in Mumbai. The duo will be making their debut with Sarfira —a Bollywood movie — as music directors. “This is our debut movie. There are four songs in the movie, and all of them are being composed by us. This is our independent project which we have bagged after a lot of struggle,” said Nayeem. From singing in hotels, to assisting various music directors, the duo has done everything to find fame in Bollywood.”I was 20 when I moved to Mumbai. My hard work has paid off after 10 years. I was doing stage shows in hotels to survive. Music has been my passion since childhood, and I wanted to do something,” said Shabir.Nayeem received a formal training in music from University of Kashmir, while Shabir learnt guitar from Srinagar before receiving a formal training in Mumbai. Both hailed from Sopore and were struggling together in Bollywood. Their similar taste in music led them to working together. Before moving to Mumbai, Nayeem had created a niche for himself in Kashmir as well. He had composed two Kashmiri albums. He had also set up Sangam Music Group in separatist stronghold of Sopore. For Shabir, life was full of struggle. “I lost both of my parents few years back. My elder brother took care and supported me. I had to return back home. After a few years, I again moved to Mumbai to follow my dreams,” he said. After all of the struggle that the two have faced, now they are getting the notice of Bollywood for their talent. “We have two more projects in the pipeline. The work on these projects will start after few months,” Nayeem said.”After completing my graduation in Music, I moved to Mumbai in 2012. Life was tough. I met many music directors and learnt a lot from them. I assisted one music director for a Bollywood movie. It is only after a lot of struggle that we bagged Sarfira,” Nayeem said.

Reel-ing under Padmavati row, Santa season may usher in good luck!

Picture abhi baki hain…mere dost. Tiger Zinda Hain is expected to roar and set the cash registers ringing. After several weeks of slumped business in theatres due to Padmavati ban, film exhibitors and distributors have a sole hope on the upcoming Salman-starrer at a estimated cost of Rs 175-crore flick along with Akshay-starrer 45-crore Padman! The total business in December was expected to be more than Rs 500 crore with movies like Padmavati and Tiger Zinda Hai combined. Fukrey Returns has balanced things out a bit. The industry now has high expectations from Tiger…, said Ansh Rathore, a city-based film director who has worked on several Bollywood hits.“After Golmaal Again in October, there has not been any Bollywood blockbuster. There were hopes from Padmavati but it has not been released by censor yet. Two months later, our hopes only hang on Tiger Zinda Hai now,” said Sunil Bansal, film distributor, Yash Raj Films. The Bhansali productions film was expected to generate huge revenue for both exhibitors as well as the distributors, but has only resulted in disbalanced accounts.“This is the worst quarter in last five years for both distributors and exhibitors. Exhibitors are in a very bad shape. This is because the regular expenditures are fixed, whether the film is released or not,” said Kamal Mukut, film exhibitor, Mukutwalas.“About 50 per cent of the revenue is given to the exhibitor. I think Padmavati was expected to be around Rs 250 crore movie. About Rs 125 crore was expected by exhibitors across the country. The entire balance sheet of the quarter has been disturbed because the movie was not released,” he added.Furthermore, the exhibitors had to continue with the existing films and several lower budget films that were due to be released, during the three-week void. However, it did not result in a break-even.“The revenue loss from one film cannot be recovered from another film. Each film has a particular balance sheet. Existing movies had to be continued for few more weeks as a result. I was expecting a revenue of Rs 50 lakh through Padmavati in December. However, I have only earned Rs 7 lakh till now,” Mukut informed.Even local film exhibitors have not been spared from the overall brunt. They are also skeptical about releasing Padmavati in Jaipur due to continuous rukus created by Rajput Karni Sena.“We are in a great loss. We are experiencing a loss to the tune of Rs 7 to Rs 8 lakh per week from the beginning of December. We do not expect a break even of the loss that has already been incurred,” said an official from Raj Mandir Cinema.“The revenue loss from one film cannot be recovered from another film. Each film has a particular balance sheet. Existing movies had to be continued for few more weeks as a result. I was expecting a revenue of Rs 50 lakh through Padmavati in December. However, I have only earned Rs 7 lakh till now,” Kamal Mukut, film exhibitor, Mukutwalas said.ACTION!Movies running:Fukrey Returns- 3.5/5 *Firangi – 2/5*Monsoon Shootout – 3/5*Upcoming blockbusters-Tiger Zinda Hai – budget: Rs 175 crorePadman – budget: Rs 45 crore

Salman Khan set to push Nitin Gadkari’s e-cycles drive

You could soon see Bollywood superstar Salman Khan pedalling on the newly-built cycle track on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, promoting a healthy lifestyle as the brand ambassador of the government’s initiative to popularise e-cycles. Modi cabinet’s ‘go-getter’ minister Nitin Gadkari, a passionate advocate for electric vehicles, said the government wants to encourage cycling as a healthy mode of transportation. An e-cycle, which comes equipped with a small electric motor, can be used to cover greater distances than plain bicycles. “Salman Khan has discussed the issue with me. He is also looking into the aspects of manufacturing e-cycles. It will create huge awareness among the masses,” the road transport and highways minister told PTI. The ‘Being Human Foundation’ of Salman Khan, an avid cycler himself, is in talks with e-cycle manufacturers for a tie-up, sources said. The minister said some two to three years back when he started talking about environment-friendly fuel, people thought he was nuts, but now they are beginning to realise its advantages. “Bringing e-vehicles besides other environment-friendly fuel is my dream,” the minister said. Gadkari said the first leg of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which includes India’s first 14-lane highway, has a 2.5-metre wide cycle track and is set for launch any day now after being completed in record 14 months as against the scheduled 30 months. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 31, 2015 had laid the foundation stone of the Rs 7,566 crore expressway, saying it will bring people “freedom from pollution”, the way Meerut showed the way towards freedom in 1857. The minister said almost all new highways and expressways will have separate cycle tracks and people will be encouraged to use those for last mile connectivity, thereby benefiting them health-wise as well. “I appeal to the countrymen to use bicycles as much as possible. It has huge health benefits and will go a long way in minimising vehicular pollution. “We have already proposed to make cycle tracks on all major roads across the country, including on highways. I am doing this in my constituency Nagpur also,” Gadkari said. He said cycling is the best form of transport to curb vehicular pollution and the government will not lag behind in creating world-class infrastructure for it, matching advanced countries. “In five years, I think we will be at par with advanced nations,” he said, adding when people in countries like Netherlands could do this, why not those in India. The image of a smiling Prime Minister Modi sitting on a bicycle, an unusual gift from his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte, in June this year is still fresh in public memory. Rutte, 50, who usually pedals to work, had praised Modi for sustainable initiatives like ‘Clean India’ and ‘Make in India’. In Netherlands, known as the the flower shop of the world, cycling is a way of life with 18 million bicycles for just 16 million inhabitants, as per the Dutch government.

Thanks to Narendra Modi govt, 10 crore farmers now have soil health cards

Gujarat elections apart, the Narendra Modi government is silently penetrating and empowering its core votebank — the peasants. In a blitz planned to be unveiled on World Soil Day on December 5, the Ministry of Agriculture will celebrate its feat of having distributed soil health cards (SHC) to 10 out of the 12 crore farmers in India. The ministry has roped in veteran Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar to feature in videos prepared to sensitise and ensure pan-India SHC usage. The actor, ministry sources said, didn’t take payment for the ad campaign. The SHCs have already covered 95 per cent of the total agricultural expanse of the country.Adding another feather to the Modi dispensation after the runaway success of such of flagship schemes as Ujjawala and Mudra, Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh would be launching a mobile app on Tuesday in Jhajjhar district of Haryana through which farmers will have access to all information on soil health cards. Ministry officials will travel the length and breadth of the country with smartphones and feed details of farmers and their crop patterns to the app; crops will also be registered. The results of the soil tests will be published on the app, which the farmers can refer to.”The ministry will be organising farmer sammelans at the districts level via the Krishi Vigyan Kendras. The agenda will be to popularise the use of SHCs by putting up hoardings and distributing leaflets across the country. News and television channels have also been roped in to spread the message,” the minister said.Singh also attacked the previous UPA regimes for neglecting soil health and agriculture, as such. “In the previous seven years, before we came to power, the UPA allocated Rs 75 crore towards soil testing. No one knows what happened to the fund. No parameters were set, neither were the states given any money. In the last three years of UPA, before the NDA came to power, there were just 15 soil testing labs; we have installed over 1000 more in the past three and a half years,” he said.Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in one of the editions of his ‘Mann ki Baat’ underlined the significance of the soil tests for agricultural growth, and the ministry has planned the health tests of the soils across the country to be a biennial exercise.

After Shashi Kapoor’s death, condolences pour in for Cong MP Shashi Tharoor

In a rather bizarre case of confusion over names, one major news channel announced the premature departure of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Congress MP Tharoor tweeted that condolence messages were pouring with people calling his office. He wrote: “We’re getting condolence calls in the office! Reports of my demise are, if not exaggerated, at least premature.”To the news channel, he wrote: “Thanks. No problem. Mistakes happen. Glad to be able to crack a smile at a tragic moment.”Bollywood veteran Shashi Kapoor breathed his last on Monday evening. Dhoom-inspired robber couldn’t roar his way out of cop’s net

A 31-year-old robber-cum-snatcher, who used to fly frequently to different cities to commit crimes — aspiring to gain notoriety by leaving a police record in every metro city — landed in the Delhi Police’s net recently.Senior officers said that the accused told police he was inspired by Bollywood blockbuster Dhoom and wanted to raise a similar gang to earn fame. The accused, Sagar, a resident of Mubarakpur in Aman Vihar, has more than 50 cases of robbery and snatching registered against him in different police stations of Delhi, Chennai, and various places in Maharastra. A loaded pistol and a stolen motorcycle was recovered from him.According to senior police officers, it was on November 30 around 11.20 am, when the Anti Auto Theft Squad of Rohini district received a tip off that Sagar would be travelling to Pritampura via Sector-22, Rohini.”A police was formed immediately and a trap was laid near Sector-22, Rohini. They intercepted a suspicious-looking man riding a black two-wheeler which didn’t bear a number plate. When the man failed to provide a satisfactory reason for the same, cops frisked him and recovered a country-made pistol. The scooter he was rising was also found to be stolen,” said Rajneesh Gupta, DCP, Rohini.”Earlier, he has also been lodged at a Maharastra Jail from 2010 to 2012. He said he was inspired by Dhoom. He used to live a lavish life and would commit crimes on stolen bikes. He would change his vehicles and his hideouts frequently to evade arrest,” the DCP said.

I did not intend to blame or shame the victim: Kirron Kher

BJP MP and Bollywood actress Kirron Kher’s unsolicited advice to a 21-year old gangrape victim has stirred a controversy. Kher, who represents Chandigarh in the Lok Sabha, on Wednesday had said that the victim should have been more cautious, applied common sense and not boarded the auto-rickshaw in which three men were already sitting. On Thursday she sought to clarify her statement, saying it was “only in the context of certain precautions” that women should take and that it was “not intended to blame the victim or shaming her”.”I want to tell this girl and all other girls that if you see three men sitting in an auto, you should not board it. I am saying this to protect the girls. We all have to be alert about such things. I am saddened by what has happened with the woman,” she had said.On Thursday she, however, cried foul blaming Congress for politicising her statement. “It is very unfortunate that in our country, every statement is politicised. I am a woman and a mother, and I have always spoken up for women’s rights whether inside Parliament or outside. I think giving a political colour to this is very unfortunate. I am only looking after the security of girls in the city,” she said.”I just said that the world is a bad place. We all, especially women, have to take precautions,” Kher said. “If the Congress wants to make an issue out of it, I cannot help,” she said.Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal had criticised Kher, saying: “I am amazed how she gave such a statement…it seems like a light take on a serious matter. Instead, she should say how she is going to make Chandigarh a safer place for women.”She also said that Chandigarh Police would provide transportation facility if women were unable to find a public transport. “You can dial 100. The police will then send a PCR to pick you up and drop you to your residence. So I think you should avail this facility. We also have smartphones with which we can click a picture of the number plate of the auto or of the drivers. We have to learn how to look after ourselves,” she said. The victim was allegedly gang raped by three men on November 17 evening after she hired the shared auto-rickshaw to go back to her paying guest accommodation in Mohali town, adjoining Chandigarh. The police has got the CCTV footage of the auto-rickshaw and its driver from a gas station in Sector 42 where the vehicle had stopped to get a CNG refuel. The Union Territory police so far has arrested the three men after over a week after the incident. The accused arrested included auto-rickshaw driver Mohammed Irfan, Garib and Poppu. Onr of accused Irfan had tried to commit suicide in police custody by stabbing himself with a glass that he broke in the lockup. The victim, who hails from Dehradun in Uttarakhand, had boarded the shared auto-rickshaw after attending her stenography class in Sector 37 here. The victim told the police that the driver took the vehicle to the gas station for refuelling and then turned towards Sector 52. He stopped the auto near a wild growth along the road and said that it had broken down. When the woman got out of the vehicle to take another one, the three men pulled her into nearby bushes and took turns to rape her.

Samajwadi twist to Padmavati row: When Mulayam Singh Yadav’s ‘chhoti bahu’ Aparna Yadav did beautiful ghoomar

Even as the protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Padmavati’ refuse to die down, a new controversy has erupted over a dance performance on the movie’s hit song ‘Ghoomar’.On Wednesday, a video of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s younger daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav went viral. Being a Rajput she is dancing on such songs without caring for the sentiments of Rajput. We will send them the original Ghoomar song and other Rajasthani folk songs if they like it so much.’The viral video come days after one of the members of the Samajwadi Party announced a Rs 5 crore bounty on ‘Padmavati’ actor Deepika Padukone.Thakur Som, who is also an office-bearer of the Chatriya Samaj, warned the Bollywood star to leave the country or face beheading. “The role played by Deepika has hurt the sentiments of Rajput women. Eighty dishes and a royal table

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”The way to a man’s heart is through the stomach.” While this popular adage was initially used to refer to men it certainly holds true for women as well. True to form, all the stops were pulled out as Hyderabad’s premier hotel, the Royal Falaknuma Palace, geared up on Tuesday to provide a mouth watering menu to the US President’s daughter.Sources said that Prime Minister Modi, Ivanka and the 101 delegates were seated on the royal dining table — one of the world’s longest dining tables — for the formal dinner. And while the guest list was not revealed sources stated that a number of stars, which includes the Badshah of Bollywood — Shah Rukh Khan — dined alongside the Prime Minister and Ivanka.Coming to the menu, what was clear that India’s and especially Hyderabad’s finest cuisine was served up in a lavish five-course meal with close to 80 dishes being served. Among them were murg pista ka salan, sitaphal kulfi, dahi ke kebab, gosht shikampuri kebab, kubani ke malai kofta. As for the famous Hyderabadi biryani, it went without saying that it made a grand appearance. In fact, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao made a special point to mention it. During his speech at the GES, Rao insisted that none of the guests at the GES could leave without trying “Hyderabad’s signature dish.”Ivanka who came after the Chief Minister to make her speech must surely have heard what he said.Indian spreadHyderabad Mutton biryaniMirch Ka SaalanDigar MeethaSheek KebabHaleemDahi KebabGosht Shikampuri Kebab,Kubaani Ke Malai KoftaMurg Pista ka SalaanSitaafal KulfiAghaz (soup),Mezbab (appetisers)Waqfa (sorbets)Mashgool Dastarkwan (main course)Zauqe Shahi (dessert)Hyderabad ke Khususi dishes

GES 2017: For Ivanka Trump’s royal dinner, Nizami magic returns to Falaknuma Palace

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>As Hyderabad rolled out a red carpet for the grand welcome of the US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump, the shutter-bugs were busy in clicking this mother-of-three.The 36-year-old, who is also an advisor to the President of the US, made a classy statement in pearl embellished black jacket and fitted trousers on her arrival.Though known for her fashion forward style, Ivanka Trump chose a rather subtle and subdued look. The former model, who has built a fashion empire, chose a bright green outfit for the main event. The silk brocade dress, though brilliant in colour, looked tad too much for the elegant Ivanka Trump. And the absurd keyhole neck didn’t do any justice either. What worked was that the dress helped her to show off her slender frame.Talking about gender gap in entrepreneurship, Ivanka said, “Women still face steep obstacles to starting, owning and growing their businesses. We must ensure women entrepreneurs have access to capital, access to networks and mentors.” The packed auditorim burst into round of appluse in a heavily-guarded conference. centre.Later in the evening, a royal dinner was hosted for the President’s daughter, who is being treated almost like a state guest. At the Falaknuma Palace, a starry Bollywood contingent led by none other than Shah Rukh Khan will dine with Ivanka Trump. The guests will be served finest of the royal cuisines that include signature Hyderabadi dishes such Murg Pista Ka Salan, Dahi Ke Kebab, Gosht Shikampuri Kebab, Khubani Ka Malai Kofta and Sitaphal Kulfi.Ivanka Trump, who ran an eponymous clothing and jewellery business before becoming an adviser in the White House, has made women’s issues one of her main policy areas. The fact that no senior member of the Trump administration accompanied her didn’t deter Ivanka from giving a rousing speech.

A pistol and a stolen motorcycle was recovered from him.According to police officers, the accused landed in the trap when a special drive to curb the menace of auto lifting and snatching was initiated in southwest district by a team from the district special staff led by Sub Inspector Naveen Kumar. DCP South-West, Shibesh Singh said that various gangs active in the area were brought under the police radar and their modus operandi was analysed.”During this exercise the team received a specific tip-off that one criminal Deepak alias Pradeep, known as Sanju Baba in his friends circle — previously involved in several cases of chain snatching, auto-thefts and also wanted in eight cases of attempt to murder — is active in the district. It was learnt that the criminal would come to Ganda Nala road near Kakrola Mod on Saturday. Keeping this in mind, a trap was laid and the accused Deepak was arrested. One loaded country made pistol and a stolen motorcycle was recovered from him at the time of arrest,” the DCP said.Police said the accused is a permanent resident of Pataudi in Haryana. After getting released from jail, his brother Nitin started committing robberies and snatchings and a reward of Rs. 50,000 was declared for his arrest. He was also involved in criminal activities with his brother,” the officer said.Singh added that Deepak went to Mumbai in 2013 to start his dream career in films but ended up spending all his money without success. He returned to Delhi and became addicted to drugs which further pushed him into the crime-world.

Vice-President warns against violence, bounties

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Violent threats and rewards for physical harm are not acceptable in a democracy, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said on Saturday as he warned forces against undermining the rule of law, in comments that come amid widespread protests against movie ‘Padmavati’.The Vice-President also said that the one should not hurt people’s sentiments and warned against selective condemnation, though he did not directly refer to the yet-to-be-released Bollywood period drama.Speaking at an event in Delhi, Naidu said there is a new problem of people feeling that some films have hurt their sentiments, and this has led to protests. Some people go overboard and announce rewards, he said.Groups claiming to represent the Rajput community have protested and issued bounties for murder and mutilation of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and lead actress Deepika Padukone, and have also been endorsed by a section of politicians, for “distortion of history.””Whether these fellows have that much money or not, I doubt. Everyone is announcing Rs one crore reward. Is it so easy to have Rs one crore? This is not acceptable in a democracy,” the Vice-President said.Protesters say the alleged depiction of romance between legendry Hindu queen Padmini and Delhi Sultanate ruler Alauddin Khilji insults the Rajput community. The film’s makers have been denying the allegation.”You have the right to protest in a democratic manner, go to appropriate authorities… Protesters should protest lawfully, peacefully,” he said.He added, “You cannot physically obstruct and cannot issue violent threats. You have no right to take laws into your own hands. Let’s not undermine the rule of law.”The December 1 release has been deferred indefinitely by the makers and the highly anticipated magnum opus has been banned in multiple states, mostly ruled by the BJP.Naidu stressed that he was not talking about a particular film. He, however, mentioned some movies such as Garam Hawa, Kissa Kursi Ka and Aandhi, which previously faced protests.”At the same time, you don’t have the right to hurt the sentiments of others”, he, however, said, also warning against selective condemnation and said it was wrong to link controversies to religion.Historians are divided over whether Padmavati ever existed. The movie is based on an epic 16th-century poem, ‘Padmavat’, by Sufi Muslim author Malik Muhammad Jayasi.”India always believed in pluralistic traditions and ethos and never allowed narrow and bigoted views or practices to rear their ugly heads. While dissent is agreeable, disintegration is not acceptable,” Naidu said.”That is the bottom line and any attempt to undermine integrity and unity of India by forces inimical to growth of India must be nipped in the bud.”A trader’s body was found hanging in Jaipur’s famous Nahargarh Fort with “we don’t just hang effigies… Padmavati” scribbled on a nearby rock on Friday, potentially marking a grotesque turn in the protests.Trouble started in January this year when Rajasthan-based fringe group Rajput Karni Sena assaulted Bhansali on the sets in Jaipur. In March, unidentified people vandalised the movie sets in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district. Days after the movie’s trailer released, Karni Sena and other fringe Rajput groups came out on the streets to protest in hundreds.

SoBo’s first cycle track to open on Dec 3

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The proposed first cycle track in South Mumbai will become operational from the first week of December. The start point of 11-km long cycling track is the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) at Marine Drive, which will end near the Bandra-Worli Sealink.Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner of A ward of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said, “We have finalised December 3 to start the cycle track, and it will be open every Sunday initially.” He added that the common public can access the track every Sunday from 5.30 am to 10 am.”The BMC has received necessary permissions from concerned departments like Traffic and Heritage. “For a cycle track, the traffic department’s permission is necessary as traffic needs to be controlled as per the need,” said Dighavkar. During his monthly meeting, Mehta had asked all the ward commissioners to enlist roads where a cycle track can be developed. “The cycle track will promote a healthier habit and also reduce the carbon footprint,” said another civic official from A ward. The BMC is also working to rope in Bollywood actor Salman Khan to encourage maximum people to use the cycle track. However, the final decision is yet to be taken.

Vasundhara Raje burns ‘disputes’ with Rajputs in Padmavati jauhar

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The protest against Bollywood epic Padmavati has more than what meets the eye. It carries political connotation rather than just being a social dissent. It’s a point on which Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje has got an opportunity to show her solidarity with the royalties of Rajasthan and the Rajput community of the state. Raje didn’t miss it. She announced banning the release of this flick till the objectionable scenes are removed. This created a sort of bridge between royalties and Raje, which had developed fissures after the episode of Raj Mahal Palace last year when Jaipur Development Authority had take on the Jaipur Royal family by locking the Palace gates. It was then suspected that JDA had acted on the instructions of chief minister, that had created a ‘gulf’ between the royal family and Raje. That time all the royal families of Rajasthan rallied behind Jaipur Royals showing their solidarity against the ‘Maharani of Dholpur’. Even Karni Sena, a social outfit of Rajputs, carried protests against the government forcing it on the back foot. Diya Kumari of royal family despite being in her team of MLAs looked standing against her own government. The locks were later opened but that could not unlock the strenuous relationship, both of them sneaked into. The widespread protest against Padmavati just came up as a convergence point for royalties and Raje. All royalties including Jaipur Royal family put up a strong protest against screening of the film in Rajasthan. Raje echoed their voice of dissent. On this point, Raje, royalties and Karni Sena – all appeared to be on the same platform sending out message that Raje still has the favour for Rajputs. The harmony which Raje has shown for the royalty issue may win her back the confidence of Rajput community, which had cast a doubt on Raje’s role in the encounter of Anandpal Singh, a dreaded gangster from Rajput community. The ‘encounter’ of Anandpal , who was on the run, had united the Rajput community against Raje’s government. The community, which comprising around 8% of total population has a decisive role in the fate of few constituencies, especially in districts like Sikar, Churu, Jhunjhunu and Nagaur. The anger of Rajputs forced Raje to refer the encounter case to CBI for investigation, which was later turned down by the central investigating agency. Now that Raje has openly sided the community’s protest, BJP can win some political points, a year before elections. The door which seemed closed, now looks ajar giving the party the opportunity to woo back Rajputs to its fold.

Bhansali has gone overboard with artistic licence: Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>As protests against Padmavati movie are spreading across the nation, Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur has also jumped into the fray.Calling that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has gone “completely overboard” with artistic licence, Shriji said: “In February I had very clearly made my thoughts known in an interview in Mumbai that the film had not attained this kind of notoriety.”However, he called the manhandling Bhansali unfortunate and said: “We cannot condone such acts because they are not right and I said it then also.” “As far as the movie was concerned, as long as the Bollywood producers don’t distort the history of our family it should be alright. I said that I had similar the experience of when the serial Maharana Pratap was filmed. The living conditions in Mewar that whether during Maharana Pratap or Rawal Ratan Simnghji’s times were not depicted faithfully,” said Shriji. He said that Bhansali claims that he has shown great respect to Rajput pride and sensibilities.“I cannot comment without seeing the picture. However, the opulence shown in the trailer shows that the filmmaker is oblivious to the actual conditions that prevailed. Mewar was never a rich state and due to frequent attacks had to maintain a huge army. All the state money went into upkeep of the army, and not into providing Maharanis with huge palaces or wealth,” Shriji said.On the issue of Jauhar shown in the film, Shrijji said: “My feeling is that an issue like Jauhar was far too sensitive to be displayed on a cine screen without total understanding of what a Jauhar is. It’s not a game, it’s not a joke. This movie is a very ‘nindaniya’ (condemnable ) reflection of ‘naari asmita’ (female pride) of Chittor,” he further said.‘Janta Curfew’ on December 1In protest against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial film Padmavati, the Dharohar Bachao Samiti has announced “Janta Curfew” in Jaipur on December 1. The convener of the committee, Bharat Sharma, told that on December 1, the city of Jaipur will be completely closed. Only medical services will be kept out of the lock. Apart from this, Government-Private Offices, shops, school-college, bus and all other services will be closed. Many Hindu and Social organizations have supported the Band. It will be full successful off.

Padmavati row: UP organisation announces Rs 5 crore reward for beheading Deepika, Sanjay Leela Bhansali

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>After Karni Sena, now Chatriya Samaj in Uttar Pradesh has announced a reward of Rs 5 crore to anyone beheading Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone.Demanding a ban on Padmavati, Thakur Abhishek Som, an office-bearer of the Chatriya Samaj has announced a reward of Rs 5 crore to anyone beheading film Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone who played the character of Padmavati in the movie.Thakur Som, who is an active member of the Samajwadi Party, warned the Bollywood actress to leave the country or face beheading. He had also threatened the Director Sanjay to withdraw release of the controversial film or be ready to face the consequences.“The role played by Deepika has hurt the sentiments of Rajput women. No Rajput woman dances in public. Director Sanjay has no knowledge of history of Rajputs in the country. He has distorted historical facts and should be punished,” stated Som.

Rajasthan burns in Padmavati’s jauhar, may lose charm of Bollywood

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>During 90s, Kashmir was burning. Army was deployed everywhere in the state. Exotic locales of ‘Paradise on land’- once a regular feature in Bollywood movies in those days – were under the shadow of guns. Movies – which had to be shot in snow clad locations what Kashmir would offer – found its new destinations. Switzerland for big budgets and Manali for others. Bollywood easily found alternative. But Kashmiris could not get an alternatives source of revenue, which a film shoot would generate right from a taxi driver to exchequer. Ultimately who was at loss – Bollywood or Kashmir? This could happen to Rajasthan as well. The state may not be passing through such extremism, but confidence of film makers have shaken after incidents of some violent protests in Rajasthan. In 2008, when Hrithik-Aishwarya-starer Jodha Akbar was shot at various locations in Rajasthan, there was not much opposition over the shoot. But when movie was getting released, social groups in the state created vandalism and banned the movie in Rajasthan. It was not enough. In January this year, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was assaulted on the sets of his movie Padmavati at Jaigarh Fort near Jaipur. The attack on the National Award-winning filmmaker by members of the caste-based organisation had forced the crew to cancel the shoot and return to Mumbai. Now with Padmavati in for release, again social groups are getting into action – protesting vigorously and demanding a complete ban on release of the movie in Rajasthan.Filmmakers flock to Rajasthan state for its beauty, heritage sites, colourful music, dance and craft traditions, and ease of acquiring shooting permissions. “If Bollywood faces such kind of protests in Rajasthan, it may find an alternative in Gujarat for forts and palaces and Dubai for desert. People of the state will only suffer,” said Srinivas Rammurthy, a production manager. The state government, which envisages a film city in Rajasthan, should come forward to negotiate such situations. The law and order situation should not be compromised letting an impression that Rajasthan is not the place for film shooting.“Protests will only complex the situation. Films are the best way to promote tourism. If shootings stop happening in Rajasthan, it will hamper tourism and ultimately revenues for one and all including the government,” said a tourism department official.Boycotting a movie will have more impact than staging violent protests. The epical movie Jodha Akbar could not hit screens in Rajasthan, but it created waves across the globe. Violent protests against the content of movie had very little impact on its fate. “Protests will help in promotion of movie. It will become hit. People will go to watch objectionable content. But Rajasthan will lose. Not only its face but also revenue and trust of Bollywood,” said Rajendra Singh, a volunteer of social group.Filmmakers flock to rajFilmmakers flock to Rajasthan state for its beauty, heritage sites, colourful music, dance and craft traditions, and ease of acquiring shooting permissions. “If Bollywood faces such kind of protests in Rajasthan, it may find an alternative in Gujarat for forts and palaces and Dubai for desert.

Global citizen Priyanka Chopra eligible to vote in upcoming UP civic polls

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>She might have left this town some 17 years ago after winning the Miss World title, but Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra is still a voter in Bareilly and eligible to exercise her franchise for the upcoming urban local body polls. The names of Priyanka Chopra and her mother Madhu Chopra are present in the voters list and recently a complaint in this regard was filed by a resident of Kuwarpur here. When the names of the actor and her mother were included in the voters list of Mumbai, where the family shifted, her father late Col Ashok Chopra had informed the district administration about it through a letter in 2012, but their names were not deleted, officials said.Additional district election officer Abhijit Mukherji said that since the actor no longer lived in the city and her house near the city railway station has been locked for long, a report was sought from the block level officer. Mukherji said that a survey is conducted before each election to check for duplication of names of voters who have shifted elsewhere.”It was perhaps by mistake on the part of the block level officer concerned, who prepared the fresh electoral rolls for this election. We will take action against those responsible for this error,” he said. District election officer R Vikram Singh said the names of persons not living in the town for long should not be in the voters list. It is also a matter of investigation as to how her name appeared in the list, he said.

After Panama Papers, Amitabh Bachchan’s name appears in Paradise Papers

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>After his name appeared in the Panama Papers, veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan’s name has appeared in the Paradise papers as well. According to the report by ICIJ, in collaboration with The Indian Express, Bachchan became a shareholder of a digital media company in 2000. However, it is not clear if the shareholding was disclosed to the Reserve Bank of India, as at the time all investments made abroad by resident Indians required RBI permission. This changed in 2004 after the Liberalised Remittance Shceme was introduced.Appleby records Bachchan and Silicon Valley venture investor Navin Chaddha as shareholders of Jalva Media Ltd on June 19, 2002. The company was set up in Bermuda on July 20, 2000 and dissolved in 2005.The company was launched by four Indian entrepreneurs in California in January 2000, with the Indian arm – Jalva Media India Pvt Ltd – being set up in February 2000. Congress hits back, says rank only for ‘metro ease’

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Taking exception to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments on his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh, the main Opposition Congress said on Saturday that while preparing its Ease of Doing Business index, the WB took into account the parameters in only two metros — Delhi and Mumbai — while ignoring the vast countryside and other cities.Describing Modi’s reference to Dr Singh as highly uncharitable, party spokesperson Kapil Sibal said if the WB had taken into account the plight of Medium and Small Enterprises (MSME), its findings would have been much different. He suggested that instead of relying upon rankings and rhetoric, the Prime Minister should go to the ground and the reality will “starkly stare in his face”.”Has the WB taken MSME’s plight into account? What the WB has studied is called the creamy layer of business, located at the top end of the pyramid,” Sibal said. He added that instead of rejoicing over the Ease of Doing Business report, the PM should find some time to study India’s position in world health and hunger index as well.”Having failed the Indian economy due to sheer ad-hocism and inexperience, the BJP government is clutching at straws to stay afloat even as it sinks the economy and hurts trade and businesses,” he added.Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi also urged the government to listen to small traders about the Ease of Doing Business. He described demonetisation and GST as “twin torpedos” that sunk the entrepreneurs. The WB report has come at a time when the Congress was planning to milch anti-incumbency factor in the Gujarat Assembly elections and it has left the party squirming. The party has now repackaged its campaign, using sarcastic terms for economic reforms — including the catchy ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ for GST — and releasing spoof videos of Bollywood blockbusters to further hammer in the economic disruption theme.

Ghoomar blooper: Deepika gyration gets boot in Raj

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Ghoomar song from Deepika Padukon-starrer Padmawati has been seen over a crore times, but in Rajasthan, it is drawing flack for the shoddy presentation of the graceful traditional dance form. The exponents of the dance form, historians, and even women in general are appalled at the way Ghoomar has been depicted in the song.Ghoomar is traditionally performed by veiled women; though this is one aspect that has changed with times; but the costume worn by Deepika is facing severe criticism as the traditional poshak (costume) worn by women performing ghoomar totally covers the body. There is no display of skin. While Bhansali’s ghoomar has ample skin show.Further the ghoomar has slow graceful movements, mainly hand movement. There is no jerky waist and bust movement that Deepika is shown doing.According to senior historian Dr R S Khangarot, “This is imaginary. The song shows a durbar and ghoomar is performed in a zenana (women’s quarters). Queens never gave such performances. Further ghoomar is a dance form of western Rajasthan and chittor is in South. Ghoomar is an aristrocratic dance, for ladies, within the ladies and for entertainment; definitely not for public show, said Khangarot. “Just using the word ghoomar does not make it Ghoomar. A choreographer can teach steps, not grace. Grace is inherent and is passed across generations. We learn ghoomar by watching our mothers and grandmothers dance,” said Kirti Singh Chauhan, who teaches ghoomar.Reema Sankhla a trained proffessional dancer is equally critical. “This is not ghoomar !! It is a Bollywood masala mix. Where is the maryada, the sophistication and simplicity that is inherent to ghoomar ? I have never seen such a Ghoomar. Bhansali is only playing to to the gallery.”The objections are fast and furious there is objection to the lyrics too. The women sing the ghoomar song for their husbands. There is respect for the performers (dholis and in the Bollywood style dholna) but showing Deepika portrayed as queen Padmini dancing for ‘dholna’ is also not being taken well well.“History should not be distorted. Filmmakers work on basis of secondary sources of information and add spice as per imagination. Rajasthan is more about oral traditions, but it does not get respect in films,” said Omkar Singh Lakhawat, chairman Rajasthan heritage development and management authority.“There is no authenticity or feel. Highly disappointed to see the Bhansali version of ghoomar,” said Vinita Bhardwaj, a businesswoman who loves dancing ghoomar. “What he has shown is a Bollywood version of Kalbelia and chari dance (with metal pot and burning fire on head) The gyrating movements are like the rustic Kalbelia song, said Bhardwaj. If the protests over portrayal of Padmawati were not enough, Bhansali has landed himself into a new ghoomar of controversy.

WATCH: Raj Kapoor’s popularity in 2017 strong indication of Indo-Russia ties: MEA in Periscope interaction

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>One rarely expects a discussion on the weighty issue of Indo-Russia ties to feature iconic Bollywood actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor in the staid world of diplomacy. But the Ministry of External Affairs wants to break the mould, as part of which it launched a social media interactive session, ‘Ask the Spokesperson’, today.MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar held a nearly 20-minute-long session on ‘Periscope’ where he fielded a volley of questions thrown up by viewers, ranging from ‘Is SAARC dead?’ to recruitment in the Indian Foreign Services. On the stalled SAARC process, Kumar said a meaningful progress will happen only when there is an atmosphere of trust and security and an environment “free of terror”.Asked about India’s ties with Russia, he underlined how Raj Kapoor continues to be popular there, which is reflective of the “time-tested relationship” between the two countries. His somewhat unconventional take on the issue was in line with the stated objective of the initiative, which is essentially making people aware of the “nuances” of foreign policy.”The idea is to explain to the common people the nuances of foreign policy. To give replies in very simple terms. PM Modi has a very large chest but a very small heart: Rahul Gandhi

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday lashed out at PM Narendra Modi, saying that he had a ‘very large chest’, but ‘a very small heart’.While addressing the PhD Chamber of Commerce, Gandhi also accused Finance Minister Arun Jaitley of behaving as if everything was fine. “Businesses are drowning, but Mr. Jaitley has the nerve to go on TV every other day saying things are just fine,” he said. The Congress vice-president also criticised PM Narendra Modi for announcing GST and demonetization without a concrete plan. “PM fired double tap – two quickly, close shots (Demonetisation,GST) to ensure target is down, which crippled our economy,” Gandhi added.Gandhi also criticised PM Narendra Modi’s ‘lack of trust’. “Business runs on a psyche of trust. Trust in this governmentis dead. PM and government are convinced every single person is a thief,” Gandhi said in his speech, adding that one develops trust by listening to each other. “Today there is no one in govt ready to listen to the pain of our people,” he added.Gandhi also said that while he was in support of Start-up India, it could not be accompanied by Shut Up India. “It is imperative for the government to listen to you, trust you and believe in you,” he said. The Congress vice president also asked the Centre why it was treating SMEs in the fight against employment with ‘such little dignity.’ “SMEs are the backbone but get very little support. Nobody else has bandwidth to take on Chinese and beat them at their game,” he added.Earlier, he targeted the government on Twitter. With a rhyme in colloquial Hindi and a dig at Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today mocked his claims on the economy, holding that it was in the ICU and “Dr Jaitley’s” medicines were ineffective.Continuing with his attacks on the government on Twitter, Gandhi said, “Dr Jaitley, the economy is in the ICU because of noteban and GST”.He also tweeted a doggerel, “Aap kehtey hai aap kissi sey kum nahi/ magar aapki dava mein dum nahi (You claim you are no less than the others, but your medicines have no strength).” The Tweet came a day after Jaitley retorted to Gandhi’s barb on the new tax regime, which the Congress leader had likened to a Bollywood villain.”Those who are used to the 2G scam and the coal scam will naturally have objections to a legitimate tax programme,” Jaitley said.Gandhi, while campaigning in Gujarat, had dubbed the GST “Gabbar Singh Tax”, recalling the villain from the 1975 blockbuster ‘Sholay’.He had also attacked the government on GST by referencing the Bollywood character’s dialogue to say it was a tax that coveted people’s earnings.Earlier in the day, the Congress vice president on Thursday took another dig at finance minister Jaitley and the Goods and Service Tax and demonetization.Taking to Twitter, Gandhi said, “Dr Arun Jaitley, demonetization and GST have put the economy in the ICU. You may say that you’re no less than anyone else, but the truth is your medicine has no strength.”With PTI Inputs

May the farce be with you: Rahul Gandhi takes down Arun Jaitley with Star Wars barb

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>After Gabbar Singh Tax, Rahul Gandhi returned with yet another barb against the Narendra Modi government, this time inspired by the Star Wars series. The Congress Vice President took to Twitter and slammed Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over the GDP numbers.Quoting a tweet by the Press Information Bureau, Gandhi said, ‘May the Farce be with you.’The tweet referred to a classic Star Wars dialogue ‘may the force be with you.’ The ‘may the force be with you’ phrase originated in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and has continued to be a classic part of Star Wars stories ever since. On October 22, at a rally in poll-bound Gujarat, Gandhi scion had renamed the landmark tax reform by the Modi government and called it Gabbar Singh tax.The phrase derived from the name of biggest Bollywood villain Gabbar Singh from the 1975 classic Sholay. The Congress Vice President had said the GST has brought lakhs of small traders to their knees, a charge that the Opposition has been levelling against PM Modi as part of a composite takedown of his handling of the Indian economy.

Gujarat Elections 2017: GST is ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’, harming businesses, says Rahul Gandhi

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –> Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today dubbed the Goods and Services Tax as ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’, naming it after Bollywood’s iconic villain as he fired a fresh salvo at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the sweeping tax reform and demonetization. As Gujarat headed for Assembly polls, Gandhi also said that the state is “priceless and can never be bought”, a day after Patidar leader Narendra Patel claimed in Ahmedabad that he was offered Rs 1 crore to join the BJP, a charge rubbished by the saffron party. Gandhi brought up the issue of GST while highlighting the hardships it caused to people during a rally that marked the formal joining of OBC leader Alpesh Thakor into the Congress as part of the opposition party’s strategy of broadening its political and social base to take on the BJP which has been in power in Gujarat for nearly two decades.”Their (Centre’s) GST is not GST. GST means Gabbar Singh Tax. This is causing a loss to the country. Small shopkeepers are finished. Lakhs of youths have gone unemployed. But they are still not ready to listen,” Gandhi told the rally of Thakor community in Gandhinagar. Late Amjad Khan portrayed the character of dacoit Gabbar Singh in the Bollywood blockbuster ‘Sholay’ and immortalised him as the scariest villain in the Indian cinema.Stating that the GST, in its present form, is not what the Congress had conceived, Gandhi said that although his party had warned the government about the adverse impact of the new tax regime (in the present form), the Modi government acted against its suggestions. Gandhi also asked the government to change the new tax system by making it simpler. Gandhi also mocked Modi over demonetisation announced by him on November 8 last year. “Don’t know what happened, on November 8, Modiji says that this Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes, I do not like them, so from 12 at night, I am going to scrap it. Ha Ha Ha,” he said. “He hit the axe, and for the first 2-3 days he could not understand what happened,” he said, adding that “the prime minister only realised his mistake after 5-6 days”. “Narendra Modi ji ruined the economy of the entire country,” he alleged.Gandhi attacked Modi and the BJP while latching on to the bribery allegation made by Narendra Patel, an activist of the Hardik Patel-led Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS). Gandhi said thousands of youths in Gujarat, belonging to all castes, will not remain silent now and their voices cannot be “suppressed” or “purchased”. Narendra Patel, within hours of joining the BJP, alleged last night at a press conference that he was offered Rs 1 crore by the BJP and was given a token amount of Rs 10 lakh.”This Gujarati voice is not an ordinary voice. This voice of Gujarat cannot be silenced or suppressed. You can offer any thing, (Rs) one crore, (Rs) 10 crore, (Rs) 50 crore, (Rs) 1000 crore, entire budget of India, entire money of the world, (but) this Gujarati voice cannot be purchased,” Gandhi said. “In the past also, there were attempts to suppress this voice. British tried to suppress Gandhiji, first in South Africa, then in Gujarat and India. But the voice of Gujarat drove out that superpower from the country,” he said.Earlier in the day, Gandhi tweeted to say that Gujarat is priceless and can never be bought. “Gujarat is priceless. It has never been been bought. It can never be bought. It will never be bought,” Gandhi said on Twitter. The BJP has rubbished Narendra Patel’s charges and said it was a “drama” staged at the behest of the Congress. “All these allegations are false. It was a drama (enacted) by Narendra Patel at the behest of Congress,” Gujarat BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said.

Here’s why Congress got trolled for paying tribute to Kishore Kumar on Twitter

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Social media is tough and unforgiving, and Congress – a late entrant is finding that out the hard way.On Friday, the Indian National’s Congress handle tweeted out a tribute to evergreen Bollywood singer, the late Kishore Kumar on his death anniversary. They wrote on Twitter: “We pay tribute to Kishore Da, the voice of almost every Bollywood hero for over two decades, on his death anniversary.”However, Twitterati, who seldom forget, were quick to point out Congress’ tumultuous relationship with the Bollywood singer. In fact, Kumar had been banned during Indira Gandhi’s Emergency by Indira Gandhi’s I&B Minister VC Shukla. Close to Indira Gandhi’s son Sanjay, Shukla had banned Kishore Kumar’s songs from All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan from May 4, 1976 till the end of the Emergency for refusing to perform at a Congress rally in Mumbai. So,when INC’s Twitter handle tweeted out a tribute to the singer, Twitterati were quick to give the grand old party a history lesson.

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>A documentary on the issue of deterioration of Rajasthani Cinema titled Lost Cinema: Rajasthani Cinema, wins the Best Script title at the Educational Video Competition organised by Consortium for Educational Communication, a centre under University Grants Commission of India, in Himachal Pradesh. The documentary was created by Priyadarshini Choudhary, a journalism student who hails from Tonk district and is a former student of a Jaipur-based private university. Choudhary was given Rs 25,000 along with a trophy as an award by Acharya Devvrat, Governor, Himachal Pradesh at the state university.”My film mainly talks about how Rajasthani cinema flourished as an industry at a point of time, especially during the 90s. The artists who worked during the era are now setting a benchmark in Bollywood as well. But scenarios have changed now. I have described the reasons for its decline,” Choudhary said. One of the major reason for the slump shown in the film is the lack of budget and inability of the state government to provide appropriate support for the industry to flourish. This is also shown in comparison to the support given by other states of the country to the regional cinema.”The other reasons include lack of ideas and proper scripting, mainly because artists are not working as seriously as they should in this field. Similar issues have been showcased in the film,” Choudhary added.Choudhary is aiming to pursue a doctorate in Journalism and Mass Communication and wants to pursue her career in documentary and film making. The competition had 43 entries from across the country, which was judged by a jury panel and entries were filtered at various levels. Lost Cinema was the only entry from Rajasthan which was selected for review.

Safety is priority of the Indian Railways; there is no limit to the rail safety fund: Piyush Goyal

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The government will “very soon” float a global tender to procure tracks for modernising the railways, which can create a million jobs within a year through various areas across its ecosystem, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said on ThursdayHe further said that safety will be priority for the railways and there would be no limit to funding it.The comments of the new railways minister come after a spate of rail accidents in the last few month leading to loss of lives.”I have diverted all available tracks to track renewal so that we can make the existing tracks safer. We are looking to go in for global procurement of rail tracks…this will help fast track the doubling of lines and new projects,” he told reporters at the India Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF).Asked by when the global tender for tracks modernisation would be floated, Goyal said “very soon, it’s under process”.”There is no limit to safety expenditure. Safety will be the priority of Indian railways. I have also categorised pedestrian foot-over bridges, platforms, entry and exit points as safety items.”I have turned around 100 year old tradition which used to consider all of this as amenities,” he said.He further said that monetising the real estate assets as well as fast tracking some of the existing investment plans would generate a lot of employment opportunities in the railways and the ecosystem around it.”My own sense is, may not be directly jobs in railways, but certainly through engaging people and working in variety of areas across the ecosystem, not less than a million jobs can be created in less than 12 months — only railways and ecosystem around the railways,” Goyal said. The government’s moving aggressively on the rail track and safety maintenance programme alone would create 2 lakh jobs, he added.Besides, leveraging the amount of railway real estate by monetising those assets will help to generate resources without burdening passengers.”If I look at the amount of investment in pipeline and activate that, it will create 2-2.5 lakh jobs in existing projects,” Goyal said.He said India has huge investment potential but a change in mindset is required to transform the country.Goyal said that with sectors like coal, power showing turnaround, it’s the turn of the railways now.On the need for the country rebranding itself, he said the narrative of India is changing.”Over the years India was well known for yoga, Ayurveda, cricket or Bollywood. Narrative is changing, Brand India is being built. India is being now recognised as a country which is honest in its dealings, where technology drives growth,” Goyal said.Stating that mega-structures cannot be built on a weak foundation, he said if India has to prepare itself for global challenges of tomorrow, there is a need to develop a framework that will ensure decades of prosperity.”I think there is no better place in the world today to invest in, no larger market than the Indian market and there is no pole which is going to be more important than India,” he said.

Short film on Kashmir’s hospitality takes social media by storm

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Forget stone pelting and enjoy Kashmir’s famed hospitality.A short film showcasing the hospitality of Kashmir has taken the nation and social media by storm. From Bollywood actor Alia Bhat to famous filmmaker Karan Johar to common man, the 5.4-minute film has been shared by who-is-who on the Twitter and Facebook. The video has clocked two million views on the face book page of Jammu and Kashmir Tourism department in less than 48 hours. It has notched 19,207 shares while 1,899 people have commented on this video.Entitled ‘The Warmest Place on Earth’, the short film has been produced by Jaibeer Ahmad and it brings to fore the hospitable, warm and spiritually rooted nature of the people of the otherwise restive Kashmir valley.”People have received it very well. I am thankful to all the people — Bollywood personalities, journalists and other renowned personalities — who have liked and shared it. Inshallah (God willing) It will be the turning point for the tourism sector in Kashmir,” said Mehmood Ahmad Shah, director of tourism Kashmir. What encapsulates Kashmir’s traditional warmth is the musical track running in the background amidst stunning visuals of the valley. The lyrics of the track ‘Sahibo’ has been written by 2010 IAS topper Dr Shah Faesal who is currently the managing director of J&K Power Development Corporation. “It is my small contribution to this amazing song,” said Dr Faesal.Sung by Mudasir Ahmad and Vibha Saraf, the song has been a value addition to the short film which is being an elixir to revive the fledgling tourism of Kashmir.”We wanted to do something more . Apart from the beauty of place what touches us is the hospitality. And that is the memorable experience. We picked it up. And the response of the film has been enormous,” said Jaibeer Ahmad, the filmmaker.Post Burhan Wani killing unrest has cost the hotel industry Rs 1,100 crore. Curfews, hartals, stone pelting and encounters have shaken the confidence of the tourists who have given Kashmir a miss after the killing of Burhan Wani on July 8 last year.Figures reveal this year around 7.9 lakh tourists visited Kashmir this year. They include over 2.6 lakh Amarnath yatris who visited the cave shrine this year. Last year 11.27 lakh tourists visit Kashmir most of them before July 8 when Burhan Wani was killed.Official figures reveal that the tourism sector suffered a loss of Rs 3000 crore due to the unrest in 2016. Official data reveal that around three lakh tourists had visited Kashmir between July 2015 and September 2015. The footfalls of tourist however were reduced to trickle in the corresponding period of the 2016 because of the post Burhan Wani killing unrest.”When recently Amarnath Yatris were killed by some enemies of peace, people thronged hospitals to donate blood and even took to streets to condemn the heinous crime. Similarly last summer a Shikarawallah lost his life while saving his guests. These are the empirical evidences of this hospitality,” said Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Hitting out at Rahul Gandhi for breaking the “well-laid tradition” of not speaking against the government on foreign soil, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today said the Modi government does not need a certificate for its performance from the Congress vice president. He also had a dig at Gandhi, saying it took him years to understand that Congress lost power due to its “arrogance”, and for that he had to go all the way to California for the realisation.”Rahul Gandhi is breaking the well-laid tradition of Indian polity –that is when you go abroad, you don’t speak ill about the government,” he told reporters here.He was asked to respond to Gandhi’s criticism of the Modi government at an event at the University of California in Berkeley in the US.”We used to go abroad at the height of corruption by Manmohan Singh government, but we never spoke like this. We were muted despite international outcry,” the Law minster said.He said the BJP does not expect the Congress leader to appreciate its work. But at the same time, the government does not require a certificate from the opposition party.”Can Rahul Gandhi appreciate us? We don’t want a certificate of our performance from Rahul Gandhi — a person who is not ready to accept that his party has lost elections in a big way. It took him years to understand that Congress was arrogant and to accept that he had to go to California,” he said taking a swipe at the Congress leader. In his speech in the US, Gandhi criticised Modi, accusing him of divisive politics and causing “tremendous damage” to India’s economy with “reckless and dangerous” decisions like demonetisation and GST.He also argued that India was being run by dynasties and cited the examples of Samajwadi Party, DMK and even Bollywood.

Car import case: HC directs Sushmita Sen to appear in court

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Madras High Court today directed Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen to depose as a witness before a trial court here on September 18 in a case related to import of a luxury car in alleged violation of foreign trade policy rules. Disposing of a petition by Sen challenging a witness warrant issued against her by the Economic Offences Court, Justice R Suresh Kumar directed the court to take up the case after concluding hearing of emergency and calling matters and complete her cross examination on the same day itself. He also directed the police to give adequate protection to the former Miss Universe and her belongings during her appearance in the court. In view of the direction to the actress to appear in the lower court, the judge cancelled the warrant. Earlier, Justice Suresh Kumar had on July 20 stayed the warrant and directed the economic offences court not to execute it till the next hearing of her petition. The case had been registered by the Customs Department and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) after it was found that the luxury car Toyota Landcruiser, bought by Sen, was imported by the seller Haren Choksey ‘misusing’ the provisions of Transfer of Residence (TR rules) of the Exim policy. Later, it was found that the car was imported by alleged mis-declaration of the chassis number, year of manufacture and the value. Though the car was a 2004 model, it was declared as manufactured in 1998 to evade customs duties. On January 24, 2006, the DRI had seized the vehicle under the provisions of the Customs Act, following which Sen voluntarily deposited Rs 20.31 lakh as differential customs duty. The economic offences court had issued the witness warrant against Sen after she failed to appear in court in June.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)
