AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala said the Chandigarh Police comes directly under the Union home ministry and they are trying to protect Haryana State BJP president Subhash Barala and his son. He demanded an answer from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah why the BJP leader and his son were being “protected”. “The Union home ministry, which directly controls UT Administration and UT Police of Chandigarh, is conspiring to hush up the entire matter so as to protect the Haryana State BJP president and his son. “Will Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah answer to the nation as to why BJP state President and his children are being protected in this fashion,” Surjewala said. He also accused Chandigarh Police DSP Satish Kumar, probing the case, of changing his statement within hours, allegedly at the behest of the Central government. The Congress also released three videos of the DSP’s statement and the woman narrating the incident. Surjewala said the police was saying that the footage of CCTV cameras, showing the stalking incident was not available. “Even before you have registered a case under correct sections, the CCTV footage has gone. Does it not show that the Union government is giving diktats to protect the Haryana BJP president and his son?” he said. He accused the BJP of adopting double standards, saying when a similar incident happened involving the son of a senior minister in Haryana government a few years ago, the current Home Minister as the then National BJP President had demanded his resignation, which the Congress had accepted. “Why double standards are being adopted by the BJP is a question that the country wants the Prime Minister, BJP President and others to answer,” he said. The Congress leader also asked if the BJP government and the UT Administration answer as to how all those CCTV cameras have stopped functioning and how all the CCTV footage had gone missing. “Is that the transparency that Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks about? And we have also released the video of the girl in question and this young girl has clearly said that she has stated so before the Magistrate in a statement under 164 and she is saying so again on camera that there was a clear cut unequivocal attempt to abduct her. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Pressure is mounting on Mehbooba Mufti-led government to give free hand to Jammu and Kashmir police and withdraw security of moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq following the lynching of deputy superintendent of police Mohammed Ayub Pandith outside Jamia Masjid.”Jammu and Kashmir Police is one of the best police force in the country. They are very brave. They are showing restraint while dealing with the people. The day they will lose their patience it will become very difficult. They are showing maximum restraint because they are dealing with their own people. But how long will it continue?” said Mufti. The Chief Minister further said that few days ago, the SHO and five other policemen were killed and now the deputy superintendent of police, the ones who were present there to protect the people were lynched.”He had gone to perform his duty. It is shameful act. God forbid if their patience wears out, those days will return when people will be running away after seeing a gypsy moving on the road. I want to say to the people that we still have time to mend our way,” she said.Mufti’s remarks came against the backdrop of mounting anger and growing clamour in the police department for giving free hand to the force to deal with the militants, stone pelters and anti national elements in Kashmir.”We are asked to exercise restraint in a situation where on one side there is a militant and on the other there is stone pelter. Our political bosses are always concerned about the situation, caring little about our safety,” said a police officer.Meanwhile PDP’s alliance partner BJP also condemned that the lynching of the DSP Mohammed Ayub Pandith and said that it is heart rending as he was killed by the same people who he was trying to protect,.”Henchmen of some people derive sadistic pleasure by lynching and killing others just to appease their bosses sitting across the Line of Control (LoC). The government should reconsider the decision of providing Z-security to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, whom the slain DSP was guarding”, said Khalid Jehangir, BJP spokesman.”His death is a tragedy and the manner of his death a travesty. May the people who lynched DSP Pandith burn in hell for their sins”, tweeted Omar Abdullah, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister..National Conference spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu went a step further and demanded withdrawing the security of Mirwaiz. “I say this strictly in my personal capacity and J&K police should immediately withdraw the Z security cover for Mirwaiz”, he said.Prominent Shia leader and Jammu and Kashmir Sports Minister Imran Reza Ansari wondered how Mirwaiz could preach on the pulpit when a human is lynched.”How can one preach on the pulpit while a fellow human is lynched to death in the compound of the same mosque. I wonder what was being preached”, he said.Meanwhile, police is not ruling out questioning Mirwaiz in the lynching case of DSP Mohammed Ayub Pandith.Suffering continuesUnder fire for failing to control the situation, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday called for the institutionalized dialogue process to get out of the difficulties and bloodshed.”People of Jammu and Kashmir have been the worst sufferers of hostility between the two countries and despite four wars contentious issues could not be resolved. Majority of people in the Sub continent want peace and resolution of issues between India and Pakistan and any step in this direction would be a contribution towards this silent majority”, Mehbooba said.Pitching for state specific Confidence Building Measures to restore the faith of people, she said time has come to open historic routes across LoC to boost cross border travel and trade. “We should move ahead and take benefit of even the opportunities emerging in our neighbourhood also”, she said while suggesting partnership with the upcoming CPEC to exploit the State of its strategic position vis a vis South and Central Asia. Asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the will and determination, Mehbooba said the present government at the Centre has a decisive mandate to take any bold decision. “Stitching the Alliance (with BJP) was a difficult decision but it was done to get the State out of its present difficulties and problems. It’s an experiment of different nature. Failure on this count would have far reaching consequences at the national level”, she said. Mehbooba regretted that the dialogue and reconciliation in the State lost its momentum after 2005 after late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed demitted office of the Chief Minister. “The present crisis is the result of the same adding the spirit of wide ranging public outreach as adopted by the then Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee needs to be restored and carried forward”, she said.

Some people spread false rumours that he was from some agency when he was performing the security duty. He was dragged and beaten till he died. His weapon was also snatched,” he said.A pall of gloom has descended on the Pandith household at Nowpora in the old Srinagar city. A grieving wife, an inconsolable daughter and distraught son are unable to come to terms with the brutal lynching of their dear one.In fact, the family was preparing to celebrate Eid as the officer’s daughter, who is pursuing MBBS overseas, had specially flown to Srinagar to join the festivities.”It was first time he was posted in Jamia Masjid. He has been known to the people in the area given that he was duty officer in Zadibal police station in mid-nineties. He was so down to earth that he would never travel in an official vehicle,” said Mohommad Abdullah Pandith, brother of the slain officer.Born in Nowpora in April 1960, Pandith completed M Com and LLB before joining the police department in 1990 as a sub inspector. After completing his basic training in 1992, he was posted in Pulwama district.”The officer served as SHO of different police stations. He was promoted as DSP in 2013. During his career, he has served different wings of district police, railways, vigilance and security in different capacities. He had received many appreciations for his work and conduct,” a police spokesman. Some initial reports said that the moderate Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was inside the mosque and continued with his sermon when the officer was being beaten to death. Farooq, however, denied that he was present in the mosque at the time of the incident. “I reached the mosque at 12.15 am while the incident had happened before that,” he said.Condemning the incident, Farooq said, “Mob violence and public lynching are outside the parameters of our values and religion. The violence that the state has wreaked on us is largely responsible for this kind of brutality, as the police is being used against the people in the most brutal way which leads to brutal reactions,” he said.J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti warned the people of severe backlash if the police loses its patience.”What can be more shameful than this (lynching of the officer). I want to say that J&K Police is one of the best police forces in the country, they are brave but they are showing maximum restraint (while dealing with the law and order situation) because they feel that they are dealing with their own people. But, for how long?” she asked.National Conference working president Omar Abdullah also condemned the incident. “I am personally anguished and devastated by this tragedy. That this happened on the most auspicious night and outside Jamia Masjid is shocking,” he said.”Such heinous elements are the enemies of Kashmiriyat and humanity and should be given the sternest possible sentence as per the law of the land,” he added. With agency inputs
<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Congress today expressed serious concern over the “worsening situation” in Kashmir after a DSP was lynched and asked the government what policy it has for the state which saw jawans and policemen dying every other day. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi termed the lynching as “horrific”, saying the incident marked a new low in the state. He lamented that the state had gone back several decades due to the “complete failure” of the PDP-BJP combine there. “The brutal lynching of Deputy SP Md Ayub Pandith marks a new low. Pained beyond words at the horrific incident,” he said on Twitter. “Heartbreaking to see J&K being pushed back several decades because of the complete failure of the PDP/BJP government,” he tweeted. Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad also condemned the brutal killing of deputy SP Mohammed Ayub Pandith and said it was against Islam and humanity. “It is a shameful act. Killing a person in the holy month of Ramzan is condemnable. Such thing is against both the Islam and the humanity,” Azad said. At the AICC briefing, Congress spokesperson R P N Singh said, “There is complete breakdown as far as law and order is concerned, as far as internal security is concerned. It seems that the Government has no policy, has no kind of action plan and seems that it is not moved by what is happening in J&K.” He said the situation in Kashmir was worsening as even forces and policemen are lynched. “A DSP is lynched in the heart of Srinagar which is extremely frightening. Is there any Government? Is there any rule of law? What kind of security scenario is this when security personnel are being lynched in the heart of the city,” he said, adding one can understand the situation today. Singh said there is complete breakdown in internal security as far as J&K is concerned. It is extremely unfortunate that so many times condolences have to be read for our brave-heart Jawans who are being martyred every day and so are policemen now. “How many more Jawans are going to be martyred, how many more Policemen are going to be martyred. We just saw in the last one month that over 17 policemen have been martyred in J&K. More than 208 Army personnel have been martyred in J&K alone,” he said, adding that there have been terrorist attacks on military establishment where civilians have died. “Where is this Government and where is its Nationalism? Does this Government feel that J&K exists and needs attention? We see no urgency, no movement, no political will as far as this Government is concerned,” he said. The Congress leader asked whether the government has shown any seriousness in discussing the deteriorating situation in J&K, both internal as well as external threat perception, and has a meeting of CCS been convened. “It is something that shakes the very foundation of the Constitution of this country. It shakes the very faith in the Government responsible for protecting our Borders, our people,” he said. Singh said this government talks much about nationalism and asked whether what was happening in Jammu and Kashmir is the nationalism they talk about. “It is matter of concern that anti-social elements and lynch-mobs are having a free-run under this government. The Congress takes this very seriously,” he said. The Congress leader said everyday jawans, policemen and innocent citizens were martyred but the Prime Minister does not find time even to even regret these incidents. “Is this nationalism and is this the ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’ that they talk about,” he asked, adding that the Congress party views this seriously and will raise this issue and seriously try and corner this government. “If anybody tries to attack India, the Congress party will strongly stand against it,” he said. Singh said the country is safe only as our armed forces are doing their duty diligently.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for state government, had then said that the post-mortem report belied the claim of the victim’s father that he was shot by policemen from point-blank range. On August 12, 2016, the apex court had ordered exhumation and autopsy of the body of Shabir under the supervision of the district and sessions judge. Rohatgi had assured the court that the probe would have the highest level of transparency and the authorities would leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of the case. The court had given liberty to the district and sessions judge of Srinagar to have the assistance of officers of his choice for the impartial exercise of carrying out the autopsy and exhumation. The apex court had observed that it was a serious matter and such a situation should be handled with a humane approach and extreme sensitivity. It had earlier stayed contempt proceedings initiated against the senior superintendent of police and inspector general of police (Kashmir Range) for not lodging an FIR against the policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), allegedly involved in the killing of Mir. It had also issued notice to Mir’s father on the plea of the Jammu and Kashmir government. The chief judicial magistrate, Srinagar, had on July 18 directed the SSP to file an FIR against DSP Yasir Qadri and others on an application of Mir’s father. Later, contempt proceedings were initiated by the CJM for non-filing of the FIR against the police officers in connection with the incident. The family of the deceased has contested the state’s plea, claiming the killing to be a separate incident which had nothing to do with the FIR registered by the police.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)
