Noida sisters’ death suicide: Post-mortem

Post mortem reports of the two teengaged girls found hanged in Barola village, Noida, suggest that their death is a case of suicide, not murder. Preliminary investigations suggested this to be a case of honour killing.Following a complaint made by the father, the Gautam Budh Nagar police registered an FIR against three relatives, accusing them of killing his daughters, police said. The girls were found hanging outside their house in Barola village, Sector 49 on Tuesday morning. They were aged 13 and 18. According to post-mortem reports, which were out late on Tuesday night, death was caused by hanging and no other injury marks were found on the body.”Prima Facie, it looked like a case of suicide,” said Luv Kumar, senior superintendent of police, Gautam Budh Nagar. “Besides a mark from the noose, no other injury marks were found on the bodies. An FIR has been lodged against Ravi, his father and uncle under Section 302 for the murder, sections 504 and 507 of the Indian Penal Code.”The mother of the girls had said her elder daughter was in love with their distant relative Ravi and the two had eloped recently. They were coerced to return by their family.Police say that though the family insisted the girls were murdered, there were gaps in their narration of the sequence of events. It suggested that they were hiding some things. “The family said that the door of their one-room set was bolted from outside; they made no attempt to open it from the only window of the room — which is right next to the door. The phone which the father had broken a day earlier was also not found,” said a senior police officer.Neighbours said none of the family members responded despite the many of them shouting when the girls’ bodies were found. While the police is convinced of the suicide theory, they are now working out the reason behind the suicide. They had detained the father for questioning. “During interrogation, he said a few days ago, two men from Ravi’s family had come to their house, searching for Ravi. Then on Monday, the father broke his daughter’s phone in anger. The younger daughter was close to her elder sister,” a senior police officer said.

Expressway work hampered due to lack of security: NHAI to SC

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>No construction is being carried out in a 25 km stretch of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Ghaziabad due to protests by farmers and lack of police protection to the workers, the NHAI told the Supreme Court today. A bench, comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta, was informed by the counsel for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) that since the construction activity has been stalled due to the farmers’ protest over land acquisition, they might miss the deadline for completing the work. The 135-km long Eastern Peripheral Expressway envisages signal-free connectivity between Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gautam Budh Nagar (Greater Noida) and Palwal. “No construction work is happening as the obstructions continue. We are not able to do construction in the 25 km stretch in Ghaziabad as no adequate police protection is there. We may not be able to comply with the deadline,” the NHAI’s counsel said. However, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar said they had filed an affidavit and a status report on several issues, including land acquisition, and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh has apprised that there was no blockage on the stretch. The counsel appearing for the state also told the bench that police protection was given for the construction work. During the hearing, the bench agreed to the request of NHAI’s counsel that Ghaziabad’s senior superintendent of police should be asked to explain why no adequate protection was provided to the officials and workers at the site. NHAI had earlier told the court that construction work in the stretch was stalled as the UP Police has not given them protection despite the apex court’s order. The apex court had earlier asked the DGP of UP to provide security for construction work of the expressway as the work in the 41-km patch in Gautam Budh Nagar district was forcibly stopped by farmers who were staging protests at the construction site. The bench was informed that the farmers and villagers had forcibly prevented construction work in the stretch from December 25 last year and no steps were taken by the police despite the request to provide protection. Regarding the 135-km long Western Peripheral Expressway, which connects Kundli to Palwal via Manesar in Haryana, the apex court was informed that the stretch from Palwal to Manesar was ready and the portion from Manesar to Kundli was under construction. The court, which has been hearing a 1985 PIL filed by environmentalist M C Mehta on issues including vehicular pollution, had asked the Centre in 2005 to build a peripheral expressway around Delhi by July 2016 to decongest and de-pollute the national capital. The two expressways each around 135-km long were planned in 2006 following the Supreme Court order to form a ring road outside Delhi for channeling non-Delhi bound traffic bypassing the national capital.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)

Assault on Africans: NHRC seeks report from Guatam Budh Nagar

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The National Human Rights Commission today issued notice to the Gautam Budh Nagar administration over allegations that few locals have been “falsely implicated” in the case on assault on African nationals. The Commission took cognizance of a complaint by the residents of the NSG society that police “falsely implicated” some of the locals in the March 27 incident that sparked widespread outrage. The notices have been issued to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Gautam Budh Nagar and they have been given four weeks to submit reports in the matter. NHRC’s Director General (Investigation) has also been tasked with collecting facts pertaining to the issue. “According to the complaint by some residents of the society, the students and their parents, living in the NSG society, are being harassed in the name of the investigations,” an official statement said. The residents complained that while some “anti-social elements” assaulted a number of Nigerian nationals at a nearby mall, police have named 53 people who were “not even present” at the place of the incident. “Allegedly, the seven persons, arrested by the police in the matter were also not present at the site of the assault. They were part of the candle march and sitting at the Pari Chowk at the time of the incident a video recording of which is available with the police,” it said.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)

Assault on Africans: Withdraw cases against civic society

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Resident Welfare Association of Gautam Budh Nagar has written to the district authority to withdraw the cases registered against NGOs and social group representatives in wake of the attack on African students here. “Nigerians in the guise of students come here and indulge in narcotics smuggling. Police should probe this angle in detail and arrest those in the wrong. We respect the Nigerians as our culture talks about ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ (The guest is equivalent to God) but we cannot allow anyone to run a racket and ruin our children’s lives,” Sher Singh, RWA secretary general said. “We also condemn the assault on Nigerians. Our demand is that police should go through the CCTV footage and identify the culprits who attacked the African students. The FIRs against the civic society members is unjust, they should be withdrawn,” he said. “A thorough investigation should be done without any bias,” Singh added. Four Nigerian students were allegedly attacked recently by a group of Greater Noida residents who took out a candle-light march after a 17-year-old boy Manish died last week in the NSG Black Cats Enclave due to suspected drug overdose. Five persons have been arrested in this connection.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)

UP Elections 2017: Voter I-card empowers UP transgenders

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Armed with a voter I-card that recognises her as a transgender and empowers her as an Indian citizen, Amita Kumari’s struggle to be part of the political process — by posing as either a man or a woman — are finally over.Along with her, more than 100 transgenders in Gautam Budh Nagar district, in western Uttar Pradesh, are getting ready to vote for the first time in their lives when the Assembly polls Are held next month. And they are exultant.“Now, I have got a voter card which identifies me as a transgender. Now, I feel I am also part of the critical electoral decision making,” said the 21-year-old.It’s a victory not just for her and other transgenders in Gautam Budh Nagar, many of them living in dimly-lit homes in their village Hoshiyarpur in Noida’s Sector 51, but for millions caught in the gender binary and struggling to claim an identity of their own.For Amita and others, it began with Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate NP Singh approaching Basera, an organisation that works for the welfare of the transgenders, and suggesting that members of the community enrol for voter IDs before the elections.“We held two meetings with them and informed them about their rights and responsibilities in a democracy,” said Singh. The district officials also emphasised the concept of equality. It wasn’t a smooth sailing. Many transgenders didn’t have Aadhaar or ration cards. The fact is, activists say, there has been little on the implementation front even after the Supreme Court ‘NALSA judgment’ in 2014, which recognised the third gender and asked the government to design affirmative action policies for the transgender community. “We are considered citizens of this country only when election appears for the votes we hold,” said 22-year-old Vinita Kumari.
