Bhendi Bazaar is undergoing a face-lift with old houses and narrow lanes being replaced by swanky high rise buildings. The neighbourhood was once known for being the den of India’s most notoroious criminal and underworld donDawood Ibrahim Kaskar.Dawood operated his unerworld circuit from his Pakmodia Street residence before he fled the country in late 80s.Across the street lived Dawood’s aide and fugitive gangster Chhota Shakeel in Ismail Building at Temkar Street. On November 14, this year, three Bhendi Bazaar properties of Dawood including the two-storied Shabnam Guest House building, six flats in Damarwala building and the restaurant Raunaq Afroz, also known as Delhi Zaika, went under the hammer. The Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) won the three properties in an auction carried out by the Ministry of Finance, under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (SAFEMA) Forfeiture of Properties Act.The trust was keen to buy the three properties for a redevelopment project carried out by them at Bhendi Bazaar. It is believed that Hotel Raunaq Afroz was one of the first properties purchased by Dawood after he took control of his smuggling business from Haji Mastan. The first and the third floor apartments in the Damarwala building belonged to Dawood’s ancestors.Even after Dawood left India in 1986, his mother continued to stay in Damarwala building. When Dawood’s brother Iqbal Kaskar was deported from Dubai, he lived in the building until August this year when the Hussaini building collapsed. Dawood’s other property — Shabnam Guest house, a double-storey structure in Yakub street was occupied by Dawood’s younger siblings — Haseena and Iqbal.”Bhendi Bazaar has always been in the news for having housed several gangsters of yesteryear. Various members of Dawood Ibrahim’s and Chhota Shakeel’s gang had connection with the area. The gangs still have their prominence in the locality. A lot of D-gang members stayed in the nearby area —Dongri and Mohammad Ali Road areas,” said a senior police official, requesting anonymity.

The police on Friday had questioned Kaskar’s partner, a builder from Mumbai who would take contracts of construction work for redevelopment or development projects. The police said, Kaskar was allegedly in a sleeping partnership with the builder. In return, the builder would give a commission or a profit margin to Kaskar in cash.”We have questioned the builder and it has been revealed that he was running a construction business with Kaskar. Although Kaskar had not invested in the business; he would get a large profit margin in every project. All the transactions were made in cash and we are trying to trace the money trail,” said a police officer. The police are also on the lookout for one RC Angadia, who on behalf of gangster Chhota Shakeel, would collect money from the fourth accused, Pankaj Gangar arrested in the case.Gangar would provide Rs 15 lakh to Angadia for Shakeel, who is in Pakistan, through hawala channels. The police suspects that Shakeel is also running a matka betting racket in Mumbai and other cities and the money would be sent by the accused as his commission in the business.”The Angadia operator and another middleman will be arrested soon. Our team is also in Bihar to look for two of Kaskar’s shooters and raids are being conducted at several locations there with the help of a Special Task Force. Recently, Dawood’s security has also been stepped up by fifty percent to counter any surprise attack. This has been revealed by Iqbal Kaskar–brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim–who has been arrested in an extortion case by Thane police. Dawood has changed his hideout four times in Pakistan since 2014 as he fears Narendra Modi government is making all efforts to arrest him, claimed Iqbal Kaskar during the interrogation. Dawood still remains in touch with his family members, but never talks to them on phone, revealed Iqbal. Dawood’s men keep him updated about his family, and whenever required, Dawood goes all out to extend help to his family. India has repeatedly raised the issue of Dawood hiding in Pakistan, but our neighbour has always refuted the charge. Iqbal Kaskar has revealed many details about Dawood and his illegal business operations. According to Iqbal, his brother Dawood has got involved with drug cartel of Mexico. Dawood is heavily investing in drugs these days and making all efforts to extend his roots in Latin America and African countries. He has already forged an alliance with local drug suppliers in these countries, revealed Iqbal Kaskar.Earlier, the Thane Police on Tuesday claimed that in the past four years at least 20 builders, jewellers and businessmen from Mumbai and nearby cities were allegedly targeted for extortion money by Iqbal Kaskar and his aides. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>It was just another Monday at a house in south Mumbai’s Nagpada, where the occupants were busy watching Kaun Banega Crorepati and having biryani, when the Thane Police came knocking. In what could be the biggest catch for India, ex-encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma and his team detained Iqbal Ibrahim Kaskar, the younger brother of India’s most wanted criminal — Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. On the surface, it looks like a simple case of a Mumbai underworld criminal involved in an extortion racket targeting realtors and businessmen. But why would the police arrest Iqbal Kaskar is an old extortion case now?The answer lies in a special strategy adopted by India, reportedly formulated by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, which is targeted to corner Dawood.Iqbal Kaskar is a very strong link that can help New Delhi to unmask the D-Company syndicate. The younger brother of Dawood Ibrahim, number 5 among 11 siblings, is relatively less fierce than other Kaskar brothers. An HT report quotes a police official, who said that Kaskar was a ‘softy’ in the D Company who ran extortion racket solely on ‘merit’ of his surname.Iqbal Kaskar never went with Dawood and other brothers Anees and Noora to Pakistan. He migrated to Dubai in late 80s, where he used to sell electronic items in shops given to him by Dawood. After 9/11 attacks, when the security forces came down on the D Company, Iqbal Kaskar was deported to India in 2003.He was booked in two case but was released on bail in 2007. The police said that he was running the extortion racket from the home of his sister Haseena Parker after her death in 2014.As the latest reports suggest that Iqbal Kaskar was in touch with his brother Anees Ibrahim, the police may be able to prove the link between Kaskar and his brothers in Pakistan.Amid all this, another important link in the D-Company mystery is Chota Rajan.Once a great friend and partner, Chota Rajan is now an arch enemy of Dawood Ibrahim.Arrested in Indonesia in 2015, Chota Rajan may be helping Indian security agencies with such specific intel. He is providing much insight to the police to nab the second most richest gangster in the world after Pablo Escobar, an HT report said. With arrest of Iqbal Kaskar, Dawood Ibrahim must be having sleepless nights in his plush home in Karachi.

However, Kaskar breached this condition of this bond, after which he is likely to face externment. The Dongri police had initiated a process of preventive action on May 26, 2015, against Kaskar after which a bond was signed by him on October 20, 2015, before Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Dongri Division, Mangesh Pote. A case of extortion was registered against Kaskar at JJ Marg police station after the complainant alleged that Kaskar demanded Rs 3 lakh as extortion.”In 2015, we had received a complaint against Iqbal Kaskar after which we decided to initiate the process of preventive action against him. Kaskar had signed the bond fearing externment from Mumbai jurisdiction,” said Pote.”He was told to deposit Rs 20,000 as bond and a surety in which he assured good behaviour and no indulgence in criminal activities. But now we can proceed to initiate the process of externment against Kaskar,” added Pote.YP Singh, Former IPS officer, said, “The Mumbai Police can extern Kaskar under section 55 of Bombay Police Act and can also send him behind bars for violating the bond signed by him. Moreover, the Thane Police should file separate cases against Kaskar on complaints given by the builders of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai,” said Singh.

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Delhi High Court today directed the Centre and the Delhi Police to re-evaluate the threat perception to Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha chief Swami Chakrapani, who was in news for burning a car that purportedly belonged to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Chakrapani has approached the high court seeking a direction to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the police to restore the ‘Z’ category security cover provided to him last year after four person were arrested for planning an attack on him, but was withdrawn on June 28. Taking note of the circumstances, Justice Vibhu Bakhru said, “The government and the police are directed to re- evaluate the threat perception and provide security cover as they consider necessary.” Regarding Chakrapani’s allegation that the decision to withdraw his security was malafide and politically motivated, the court said it was not examining this issue and it expected that the police go into it independently. The court said that the police shall share with Chakrapani its decision and the extent of security to be provided to him, so that if he was dissatisfied with it, he would be at liberty to arrange private security cover. Advocate Rajesh Raina, appearing for Chakrapani, argued that the decision to withdraw the security cover was illegal and without any justification or any intimation to him. He said it was withdrawn in an arbitrary manner without any reason and alleged that it was done due to some political vendetta against the Hindu mahasabha chief as he has been vocal against the government on various issues. He sought a direction to the authorities to restore the ‘Z’ level security and provide better security in the light of the “lingering threats to the life of petitioner from global terrorist Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel as well as his henchmen thereby protecting the life, limb and property of the petitioner”. The counsel claimed that Chakrapani was receiving threats from gangsters Chhota Shakeel, members of Dawood Ibrahim’s gang and that he was not able to move freely without security cover as he has become vulnerable to attacks. It was alleged in the plea that the police apprehended certain persons were engaged to assassinate him and it warned him to be alert. Chakrapani, who won the car at an open auction in Mumbai on December 9, 2015, had publicly burnt the vehicle purportedly belonging to Dawood Ibrahim in Ghaziabad. He was provided ‘Z-category’ security, consisting of round-the-clock cover by commandoes and pilot and escort vehicles during travel, in June last year after four persons were arrested for planning an attack on him.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, quoting an information received from the Iraqi intelligence sources, said that they may be lodged in a jail in Badush in northwest of Mosul. While Mosul was recently liberated by the Iraqi forces, Badush remains under the ISIS control. She said that the Iraqi foreign minister Ibrahim al-Eshaiker al-Jaafari, who is visiting India on July 24, may come with some more information about the abducted Indians.Briefing family members of the abducted men, who are mostly from Punjab, Swaraj said that the information was gathered by the Minister of State for External Affairs, VK Singh, who rushed to Erbil in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq – the closest major city to Mosul. He had held a series of meetings with senior Iraqi officials, including many in Baghdad.Earlier reports had suggested that ISIS terrorists had lodged the Indian workers at a church in Mosul. But there was no trace of them after the city was liberated by Iraqi forces recently. “We remain engaged at a very senior level with the Iraqi authorities,” External Affairs spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.VK Singh left only next day when Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi declared victory over the ISIS in Mosul. Since then he has met Kurdish leaders in Erbil and Iraqi leaders, including foreign minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, deputy foreign minister Nazar Khairallah, national security advisor Faleh Al-Fayyad and the secretary-general of Iraq’s council of ministers Mahdi Al-Alaq in Baghdad.Swaraj said that VK Singh was told that Indians were deployed at a hospital construction site and then shifted to a farm. The court for Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act cases had last month convicted Salem and five others in the case. The court is now hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence. Seeking a lesser punishment for his client, Salem’s lawyer Sudeep Passbola said there was no evidence that Salem was a part of the conspiracy, nor was there any evidence that he attended the meetings where the blasts were plotted. There was nothing to show that he was even in contact with the masterminds of the conspiracy, advocate Passbola said, adding, “Salem played a very limited role”. Salem was not acting at the instructions of main conspirators Dawood Ibrahim, Tiger Memon or Mohammed Dossa (all of them absconding), the lawyer added. It cannot be said that Salem was in a “commanding position” (among the blasts accused) just because he later absconded, the lawyer said, adding that the former gangster did not know why the arms and ammunition were being transported. He learnt about it at a later stage, the lawyer claimed. According to the CBI, Salem was involved in transporting arms and ammunition which were smuggled into India prior to the blasts. The arguments will continue tomorrow. The special TADA court had on June 16 convicted six people and acquitted one in the case. In the first set of trial in connection with the 1993 blasts case, the court had convicted a hundred accused. The trial of Salem and others was separated as they were arrested later.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)

Besides him, the other persons who have been convicted are three retired government servants — Jayashree Dattatray Rahate, Deepak Natvarlal Shah and Lalitha Lakshmanan. Rajan is lodged in Tihar Jail here. The other three persons, who were out on bail, were taken into custody after the verdict was announced. The court had on March 28 reserved its judgement in the case in which Rajan allegedly procured a fake passport in the name of Mohan Kumar with the help of the three government officials. Lakshmanan had approached the high court to transfer to Bengaluru her trial in the case but the petition was rejected on January 9 on the ground that a district court here could also hear the matter. During pendency of the plea, the high court had ordered a stay on pronouncement of verdict in the case by trial court. However, the high court later rejected the plea. All the four persons have been convicted of offences under sections 420 (cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 467(forgery of valuable security or will), 419(cheating by impersonation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and section 12 (offences and penalties) of the Passport Act. Organisations like ‘Hindu Govansh Raksha Samiti’, ‘Swarajya Hindusthan Pratishthan’, ‘Bajrang Dal’, ‘Sanatan Sanstha’ participated in the protest, wherein they shouted slogans against Pakistan by holding banners in their hands. Hindu Jan Jagriti Samiti demanded that Pakistan should rather dare hang the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, and Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim who is hiding in that country. “Pakistan has always resorted to oneupmanship while dealing with Bharat. Jadhav’s case is an example of this. His case was purposefully heard in a military court so as to refuse him an opportunity to defend himself, and the decision to hang him was taken,” said Samiti spokesperson Uday Dhuri. He said Jadhav was a patriot who had served as an officer in Indian Navy. “Pakistan should rather show the courage to apprehend and hang the Lashkar-E-Taiba co-founder Hafiz Saeed or infamous goon Dawood Ibrahim, instead of hanging Jadhav,” Dhuri demanded. He said, “If Pakistan still ignores our concerns, then India should stop Sindhu river water and close embassies in both the countries to teach Pakistan a lesson.”(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)
