Bhendi Bazaar is undergoing a face-lift with old houses and narrow lanes being replaced by swanky high rise buildings. The neighbourhood was once known for being the den of India’s most notoroious criminal and underworld donDawood Ibrahim Kaskar.Dawood operated his unerworld circuit from his Pakmodia Street residence before he fled the country in late 80s.Across the street lived Dawood’s aide and fugitive gangster Chhota Shakeel in Ismail Building at Temkar Street. On November 14, this year, three Bhendi Bazaar properties of Dawood including the two-storied Shabnam Guest House building, six flats in Damarwala building and the restaurant Raunaq Afroz, also known as Delhi Zaika, went under the hammer. The Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) won the three properties in an auction carried out by the Ministry of Finance, under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (SAFEMA) Forfeiture of Properties Act.The trust was keen to buy the three properties for a redevelopment project carried out by them at Bhendi Bazaar. It is believed that Hotel Raunaq Afroz was one of the first properties purchased by Dawood after he took control of his smuggling business from Haji Mastan. The first and the third floor apartments in the Damarwala building belonged to Dawood’s ancestors.Even after Dawood left India in 1986, his mother continued to stay in Damarwala building. When Dawood’s brother Iqbal Kaskar was deported from Dubai, he lived in the building until August this year when the Hussaini building collapsed. Dawood’s other property — Shabnam Guest house, a double-storey structure in Yakub street was occupied by Dawood’s younger siblings — Haseena and Iqbal.”Bhendi Bazaar has always been in the news for having housed several gangsters of yesteryear. Various members of Dawood Ibrahim’s and Chhota Shakeel’s gang had connection with the area. The gangs still have their prominence in the locality. A lot of D-gang members stayed in the nearby area —Dongri and Mohammad Ali Road areas,” said a senior police official, requesting anonymity.

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Days after the arrest of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar and his two aides in connection with the extortion of a builder and a jeweller in Thane, the police have now come across Kaskar’s construction ‘business’ as well.According to police sources, apart from extortion, Kaskar is allegedly involved in a construction ‘business’ wherein he would threaten tenants to vacate their flats for redevelopment. The police on Friday had questioned Kaskar’s partner, a builder from Mumbai who would take contracts of construction work for redevelopment or development projects. The police said, Kaskar was allegedly in a sleeping partnership with the builder. The latter would use Kaskar and Dawood’s name to threaten landowners or tenants, and would take help of other aides of Kaskar to forcefully vacate their premises where he would carry out redevelopment. In return, the builder would give a commission or a profit margin to Kaskar in cash.”We have questioned the builder and it has been revealed that he was running a construction business with Kaskar. Although Kaskar had not invested in the business; he would get a large profit margin in every project. All the transactions were made in cash and we are trying to trace the money trail,” said a police officer. The police are also on the lookout for one RC Angadia, who on behalf of gangster Chhota Shakeel, would collect money from the fourth accused, Pankaj Gangar arrested in the case.Gangar would provide Rs 15 lakh to Angadia for Shakeel, who is in Pakistan, through hawala channels. The police suspects that Shakeel is also running a matka betting racket in Mumbai and other cities and the money would be sent by the accused as his commission in the business.”The Angadia operator and another middleman will be arrested soon. Our team is also in Bihar to look for two of Kaskar’s shooters and raids are being conducted at several locations there with the help of a Special Task Force. The shooters are hiding at the Nepal border,” said another senior officer.
<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>It was just another Monday at a house in south Mumbai’s Nagpada, where the occupants were busy watching Kaun Banega Crorepati and having biryani, when the Thane Police came knocking. In what could be the biggest catch for India, ex-encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma and his team detained Iqbal Ibrahim Kaskar, the younger brother of India’s most wanted criminal — Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. On the surface, it looks like a simple case of a Mumbai underworld criminal involved in an extortion racket targeting realtors and businessmen. But why would the police arrest Iqbal Kaskar is an old extortion case now?The answer lies in a special strategy adopted by India, reportedly formulated by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, which is targeted to corner Dawood.Iqbal Kaskar is a very strong link that can help New Delhi to unmask the D-Company syndicate. The younger brother of Dawood Ibrahim, number 5 among 11 siblings, is relatively less fierce than other Kaskar brothers. An HT report quotes a police official, who said that Kaskar was a ‘softy’ in the D Company who ran extortion racket solely on ‘merit’ of his surname.Iqbal Kaskar never went with Dawood and other brothers Anees and Noora to Pakistan. He migrated to Dubai in late 80s, where he used to sell electronic items in shops given to him by Dawood. After 9/11 attacks, when the security forces came down on the D Company, Iqbal Kaskar was deported to India in 2003.He was booked in two case but was released on bail in 2007. The police said that he was running the extortion racket from the home of his sister Haseena Parker after her death in 2014.As the latest reports suggest that Iqbal Kaskar was in touch with his brother Anees Ibrahim, the police may be able to prove the link between Kaskar and his brothers in Pakistan.Amid all this, another important link in the D-Company mystery is Chota Rajan.Once a great friend and partner, Chota Rajan is now an arch enemy of Dawood Ibrahim.Arrested in Indonesia in 2015, Chota Rajan may be helping Indian security agencies with such specific intel. He is providing much insight to the police to nab the second most richest gangster in the world after Pablo Escobar, an HT report said. With arrest of Iqbal Kaskar, Dawood Ibrahim must be having sleepless nights in his plush home in Karachi.
<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Thane Police on Tuesday claimed that in the past four years at least 20 builders, jewellers and businessmen from Mumbai and nearby cities were allegedly targeted for extortion money by Iqbal Kaskar and his aides. The police will now record the statement of these ‘victims’ of Kaskar in order to bolster their case against him.Speaking to DNA, a senior police officer, who is privy to the investigation of Kaskar’s extortion case, said, “Though the current extortion took place in 2016, Kaskar and his men are believed to have extorted as many as 20 builders, businessmen and jewellers from Mumbai Metropolitan Region to the tune of crores of rupees.”As per the officer, Kaskar used to operate smartly while targeting his victims. “Two of his henchmen, who are also accused in the current extortion case, used to meet the victims and would dial Kaskar’s number from their phone. They would then make Kaskar speak to the victims.”Since Kaskar used to drop Dawood’s name, too, while threatening the victims, the police are examining if Dawood had a role to play in the extortion threats issued by his brother. “If we get any concrete evidence against Dawood, then we would certainly add his name in the FIR as well. We are probing if calls were made and received from Pakistan by Kaskar and his men,” the officer said.As per the police, the biggest evidence in the current extortion case against Kaskar is that the group had forcibly extorted four flats and Rs 30 lakh in cash from a builder and one of the accused was found occupying the flat when the police searched it. A team of 55 police personnel headed by Senior Inspector Pradeep Sharma arrested Kaskar from his Nagpada residence on Monday night.
