Gujarat elections 2017: Rahul Gandhi’s soft ‘Hindu’ strategy a success

Gujarat elections saw a new avatar in the ‘janeu-dhari’ and ‘tilak’-sporting Rahul Gandhi, as he hopped temples to woo Hindu voters. During his unusual temple run, beginning with Dwarkadheesh temple, Rahul covered nearly two dozen temples across the state. His pilgrimages included the famed Somnath temple, which has been at the centre of political discord between Congress and BJP, as well as the Akshardham temple of the Swami Narayan sect that has worked as a bulwark for the BJP.He even visited a Navarati pandal in Chandi Bazar, Jamnagar. And when his Hindu branding was challenged, Rahul declared at Bahuchara ji temple, “Main Shiv ka bhakt hoon. Sachaai mein believe karta hoon. BJP jo bhi bole, main apni sachaai mein believe karta hun (I am devotee of Lord Shiva, and I believe in honesty. Whatever the BJP may say, I believe in my own honesty and truth).”By wearing Hinduism on his sleeve, Rahul perhaps forced even Prime Minister Narendra Modi to up his temple visits amid a punishing campaign schedule. To keep the BJP at bay on religious issues, Congress took every care to steer clear of its minority appeasement image. In none of Rahul’s rallies were there any Muslims on the dais, so much so that even Ahmed Patel was kept at a safe distance.Rahul’s temple visits also underscored the fact that the Congress now believes that it will have to reclaim its earlier ‘soft Hindu’ party image, and undo the damage inflicted by its anti-Hindu, pro-Muslim image. The future course of Indian politics might seen a more “Hindu” Rahul Gandhi. It would be interesting to know how Rahul, after tasting relative success in Gujarat, deal with the Ram Mandir issue.RAHUL’S NEW AVATARSome of Rahul’s pilgrimages included the Somnath temple, the Akshardham temple of the Swami Narayan sect, the Bahuchara ji temple and a Navarati pandal in Chandi Bazar, Jamnagar To keep the BJP at bay on religious issues, Congress took every care to steer clear of its minority appeasement policy. ‘Revolt against guardians if they insist on dowry,’ Sushil Modi tells youngsters

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Tuesday exhorted the youngsters to “revolt” against their guardians if they insisted on demanding dowry for marriage. The senior BJP leader made the fervent appeal to the youth on the sidelines of an anti-dowry campaign organised by a Hindi newspaper in the state capital here. The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar had launched a statewide campaign against dowry and child marriage on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.Modi had hosted the wedding of his son here in a simple way on December 3.Deviating from the tradition, Modi’s son’s wedding was held during the day and without any ornate arrangements, musical bands or feasts. All the guests were requested not to bring gifts and were given a packet, containing four laddoos, each.”Young men should show the courage and tell their elders that they will revolt if dowry is taken for their marriage. Such a bold step will put an end to this social evil, which afflicts the affluent and the poor alike,” Modi said.Delving into history, the deputy chief minister said, “Dowry was unheard of in ancient India. Girls used to choose their life partners through a swayamvar. In the memoirs of Megasthenes, we find no mention of dowry. Apparently, the society subsequently started believing that a good match for a girl could only be found in exchange for money. This has to end.”He also urged the women to play an important role in rooting out the evil practice of dowry.”An important role has to be played by the women too as they are at the receiving end of this. The habit of celebrating the birth of a boy and being unhappy when a girl is born needs to be given up. Girls must be brought up with care and given a good education, so that they become economically self-reliant,” Modi said.”Bihar is the land of Jayaprakash Narayan, who had called for a total revolution in the 1970s. We must strive to realise his dream and strike at the roots of social evils like dowry. This cannot be done only through laws, which have been in place for long. Public awareness is a must to bring about the desired change,” he added.

Shiv Sena pursues growth plan, gears up for solo fight in next elections

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Shiv Sena is slowly and steadily pursuing its plan to spread its presence in all 288 assembly and 45 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra before taking a final call to go solo in the elections slated for 2019. Even though the saffron party is sharing power with the ‘’big brother’’ BJP in the state since December 2014, the Shiv Sena is stepping up its attack against the government on a number of issues taking the space of opposition too. The party president Uddhav Thacleray at the recent meeting with the senior leaders has told the cadre to warm up for further strengthening the organisation at the grassroots to take on mighty BJP.Party MPs, legislators and senior leaders have been assigned district and region wise responsibilities to counter BJP’s strategy to penetrate upto the booth and block level. Thackeray is personally keeping an eye on organisational work and he has been in constant touch with the district chiefs. Thackeray has already completed Marathwada tour and will visit Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara between November 24 and 26. These districts, where BJP has made sufficient inroads while weakening the hold of the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party.Notwithstanding the setback in the recent civic and local body elections in which BJP has gained a top slot, Shiv Sena has made it amply clear that it will raise issues faced by common man and encash unrest due to demonetization, Goods and Services Tax, technical glitches in the implementation of much ambitious farm loan waiver scheme, rising farmers suicides and their plight due to low prices for agriculture produce and more importantly curb on development expenditure following paucity of funds.Shiv Sena leader, who is engaged in pursuing party’s roadmap for consolidation, told DNA,’’ Party president Uddhav Thackeray has been quite clear that despite efforts to corner Shiv Sena especially by BJP it will continue to raise issues faced by people. This has been time and again proved be it the issue of amendment to the Land Acquisition, changes in Labour Laws, rehabilitation of farmers affected by Mumbai Nagpur expressway or by Metro rail and other infrastructure projects in Mumbai and rest of Maharashtra. Shiv Sena voiced their concerns and made government to make necessary changes.’’ He informed that Thackeray will conduct similar tours in rest of Maharashtra ahead of next assembly and parliamentary elections.Meanwhile, Thackeray has told BJP that the Shiv Sena will not compromise on nomination of former Shiv Sena leader and chief minister Narayan Rane during the election to the state legislative council slated for December 7. Besides, the party will continue to oppose Rane’s induction in the state cabinet as he has rebelled against Shiv Sena and also attacked the party supremo Bal Thackeray.Rane recently quit the Congress party to float his own outfit and extended support to BJP. He is now NDA partners.

MLC polls: BJP cosies up to Shiv Sena for support

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>While the gloves are off for the state legislative council elections, the BJP is trying to solicit the support of their junior ally, the Shiv Sena for their candidate. On Thursday, revenue minister Chandrakantdada Patil and education minister Vinod Tawade met Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray at his residence, Matoshree, in Bandra east. Shiv Sena leaders said the council poll was on the agenda of the meeting. The July 7 by-election has been necessitated after the resignation of Narayan Rane from the Congress, who has formed his own front, the Maharashtra Swabhimaan Paksha, and is waiting in the wings to be inducted in the state cabinet as BJP’s ally.A senior Shiv Sena leader said that while there were no chances of them supporting Rane in case the BJP declared his nomination, their senior ally could not take them for granted when it came to the Sena’s support in the council polls. “Much of this depends on the candidate to be fielded by the Congress and NCP. The picture will be clear only then,” he added, while stating that the Shiv Sena would not stake claim to the seat.Polling in the elections takes place through secret ballot, which raises the spectre of cross-voting and horse trading.

Pune: Painter arrested in connection with the sexual assault and murder of two-year-old girl

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Three days after the incident of sexual assault and murder of a two and half year-old girl, Pune police managed to nab a 23-year-old man doing painting jobs from Satara district on Tuesday. According to police, the man knew about the arrangement of the house where girl’s family stays from where he had picked up the girl. The arrested person has been identified as Ajay alias Babalu Rameshwar Chaure and he does painting work at different sites in Pune. According to police, Chaure had left the city after committing the crime and he had taken shelter in Satara district. Police officials stated that till few months back, Chaure was staying in the same building in Dhayari area where crime took place and he knew about the arrangement of the house. “Nowadays he was staying in Narayan Peth area but he would often go to the Dhayari area to meet his friends. During his visits to the area, he came to know about the girl’s family,” additional commissioner of police Ravindra Sengaonkar said. According to Sengaonkar, on day of the crime, Chaure had come to the Dhayari area where he had alcohol with his friend. He said, “On the night of October 21, Chaure and one of his friends staying in Dhayari consumed alcohol. After consuming one bottle, his friend left the spot while Chaure went to the liquor shop to buy one more bottle. He was drinking the liquor on the road only while walking when he reached near the building where girl’s family stay.””He approached the house and since he knew the arrangement of the house, he managed to sneak into the house and picked up the girl while she was sleeping next to her mother,” Sengaonkar added. According to the statement given by Chaure to police, he took the girl to an under-construction site which is located 70 meters away from the girl’s house and he sexually assaulted the girl before strangulating her and throwing her body into thick bushes. During the investigation, police interrogated nearly 40 to 50 people staying in the same vicinity. During the interrogation, police also questioned Chaure’s friend who was present with him on the day of the incident. “While questioning his friend, we got some clues about Chaure who was present in the area on that night. CM making min progress cards to decide on cabinet reshuffle

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>As the state government celebrates its three years in office on October 31, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has prepared a progress card for every member of his council of ministers. These progress cards will decide the cabinet reshuffle.Fadnavis had issued letters to all the ministers asking for five achievements of their departments, five such decisions that have benefited people the most.Sources told DNA that after receiving these reports from all the ministers, Fadnavis asked his team of experts to analyse how far these decisions have brought about changes in the lives of people. On the basis of this analysis, Fadnavis has prepared a progress card of his ministers. A senior leader said that factors such as the minister and department’s image in the public, accountability to people, quick response at all levels, and image perceived through media reports, also influenced the progress cards. The reshuffle is expected to happen in November, after Fadnavis completes three years in office.Sources within BJP said that many ministers who did not visit the BJP state head quarters soon after becoming ministers are now frequently seen at the BJP office. The progress card categorises the ministers in three categories based on their performance. The ministers who have poor performance or whose departments were in the headlines for negative reasons would be cut to size during the reshuffle.Meanwhile, a possible induction of Narayan Rane has sent shock waves through Shiv Sena, BJP’s biggest alliance partner. So far, Shiv Sena has chosen to ignore Rane whenever a question regarding him is posed by the media. The same was evident when Sena ministers met Fadnavis after the stampede at Elphinstone Road station and when Uddhav Thackeray addressed a press conference. However, Rane’s induction seems certain as Fadnavis stated last week, “Rane would be given due respect during the reshuffle.”A minister of state considered to be close to Fadnavis is seen at BJP state headquarters in Nariman Point these days. A minister whose department constantly attracted negative headlines has also been spotted at the BJP office recently. A few aspirants who have been MLAs for more than two terms were also seen at the BJP headquarters frequently.WHILE IRON IS HOTSources within BJP said that a few MLAs are lobbying via the party route and have been meeting party president Raosaheb Danve whenever he visits the party office. According to party insiders, the machinery is busy developing effective ways to communicate to the people on the Fadnavis government and party’s performance over the past three years.

She died in 1971, leaving behind her son Jayakumar and daughter Jayalalithaa as successors, she said.Deepa claimed that her father got married after her grandmother’s death and lived in a joint family with his wife, children as well as his sister (Jayalalithaa) in the same house for a long time.Later, for the sake of convenience, the family had to move to the present residence at T Nagar here, she said.Deepa further submitted that Jayalalithaa died last year on December 5 leaving behind her (Deepa) and her brother as second class legal heirs to succeed to her entire estate, that also includes the Poes Garden residence of the former chief minister.Deepa said she was shocked by the government’s decision to convert her aunt’s Poes Garden residence into a memorial. Palaniswami had on August 17 announced his government would convert Jayalalithaa’s ‘Veda Nilayam’ residence into a memorial.”The press release of the chief minister (making public the decion) is without any basis and he (K Palaniswami) has got no locus standi to issue it with respect to a private property which lawfully belongs to me and my brother,” she said. The petitioner alleged that officials of the revenue and tourism departments are surveying the property in a haste “which is nothing but illegal”.

Despite being warned of being barred from travelling by flights for the offence, Narayan allegedly threatened the duty manager, saying: “I will somehow reach Mumbai. If I do not strip you of your underwear, my name is not Aditya Narayan.”The actor, who was travelling with a group of five people on flight 6E 258, was finally allowed to board the plane after he apologised to the crew, airline officials said.According to a statement issued by the airline, the group was carrying an excess baggage of 40 kilos, for which they were charged around Rs 13,000.”He refused to pay the amount to the female check- in staff member and said that he will pay not more than Rs 10,000 for the excess baggage and also used unparliamentary language with the female staff member,” the statement read.Airline officials also added that Narayan pointed a finger at the duty manager and even hurled abuses. “When politely asked to be civil and not use such language as there were other passengers and female staff members present, he started shouting even louder and used abusive words which we are refraining from mentioning here,” it added.Several witnesses also said Narayan calmed down after he was told that such behaviour could result put him into the list of flyers barred from boarding jets. Narayan’s friends, who are also believed to have intervened, asked Aditya to apologise, following which they were handed over the boarding cards. However, Narayan did not respond when DNA tried to contact him.A new regulation issued by the Civil aviation ministry last month mandated that unruly passengers could be banned from flying for a period ranging from three months to two years or more. The extent of the ban will depend on the quantum of the act of the passenger.

Instead of staying unemployed and consuming country liquor, the youths can join the army where they will get rum to drink and good food to eat.” Praising the Dalits for their fighting spirit, Athawale added, “Dalits are known to be fighters and they can contribute towards bettering the Indian Army. There is a misconception that people joining the army die early. In reality, more people die in road accidents or due to heart attacks than while serving in the Army.” Athawale also spoke about the recent tragedy at Elphinstone railway station tragedy where 23 people lost their lives in a stampede where he demanded strong action against the guilty railway officials. “The tragedy has taken place due to the lethargic attitude of the railway officials. There should be a judicial inquiry in the mishap and the guilty railway officials should be given strict punishment.”While demanding action against railway officials, Athawale ridiculed opposition parties stance of opposing the Bullet Train. “Their stance of not having Bullet Train in the country is not right. While the improvement is needed in the infrastructure of local train, there is also a need of Bullet Train.”Being a part of National Democratic alliance (NDA) when Athawale was asked about the likelihood of Narayan Rane’s new party allying with NDA, he said, “Narayan Rane’s party will definitely be a part of NDA and the ally will make NDA even stronger.”

Narayan Rane’s allegations are ‘devoid of facts’: Ashok Chavan

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –> Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan today said that the reasons cited by senior leader Narayan Rane for leaving the party were “devoid of facts”.Rane, who often targeted Chavan while expressing his resentment about the way Congress treated him, today announced that he was quitting the party.”I came to know through television channels that Narayan Rane has decided to leave the party and resign from party posts. Whatever reasons he gave are devoid of facts. I wish him luck for his future assignments. I will put forth the facts in due course,” Chavan told PTI.While announcing his exit from the Congress earlier in the day, Rane said that Chavan did not have “any qualification” to be the state unit’s chief and accused Chavan of conspiring against him.AICC chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said in Delhi that the former Maharashtra chief minister’s move was “intriguing” as it came a day after what he called levelling of allegations against Rane by a BJP leader over his alleged connections with Dawood Ibrahim.Rane also accused the Congress of reneging on the promise of making him the chief minister when he joined the party 12 years ago after leaving the Shiv Sena.Reacting to the development, Shiv Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe dismissed Rane’s earlier claim that her party had invited him to return to its fold.”I do not have any clue if any offer was made at all. But it is improbable that someone approached him and he declined,” Gorhe told PTI.”From what I know about how our party functions, any person in Sena will not do anything without a green signal from (party chief) Uddhav Thackeray,” she said.Despite the late Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray making him chief minister, Rane forgot history and continues to criticise Uddhav Thackeray, she said.Meanwhile, as speculation is rife that Rane may join the BJP, the ruling party said it was an occasion for the Congress to introspect.”People are not happy with the organisation. The Congress is on the verge of destruction. If senior leaders are quitting the party for not being treated properly, the party needs to introspect,” said Atul Shah, state BJP spokesperson.NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik, on the other hand, hit out at Rane, calling him hungry for power.”The Congress gave him a ministerial berth and made him a member of Legislative Council. When his party is out of power, this greedy man, who cannot live without power, is knocking on BJP’s doors. The question is whether the BJP will accept him or will he become another Shankersinh Vaghela,” Malik said.

Gauri Lankesh shot dead: CM Siddaramaiah calls it ‘assassination on democracy’, journalists demand immediate probe

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday condemned the death of senior journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh and said it “is an assassination on democracy”.”Absolutely shocked to learn about the murder of renowned journalist Gauri Lankesh. I have no words to condemn this heinous crime,” Siddaramaiah tweeted.”In fact, this is an assassination on democracy. In her passing, Karnataka has lost a strong progressive voice, and I have lost a friend,” he added.Meanwhile, Bengaluru deputy commissioner of police MN Anucheth confirmed that Lankesh was killed around 8-8:15 pm at her residence in Bengaluru’s Rajarajeshwari Naga.Anucheth said that the number of assailants is not very clear, but three people are suspected to be involved in this.He said that Lankesh succumbed to multiple bullet wounds on her body.Lankesh was the editor of the Gauri Lankesh Patrike, a magazine described as an ‘anti-establishment’ publication.Last year in November she was convicted of defamation and was sentenced to six months in jail, after she ran a piece in 2008 that Prahlad Joshi, a BJP MP from Dharwad, and Umesh Dushi, also of the BJP, found objectionable. However, the court also granted her bail and allowed her to appeal to a higher court.Meanwhile, President of the Press Club of India (PCI) Gautam Lahiri lamented the death of journalist Gauri Lankesh and deemed it as a “sad day for democracy.”While speaking to ANI about the murder, Lahiri said, “As the President of the Press Club of India, I think that it is a sad day for democracy and freedom of press. A journalist who exposed the wrong doing of the country was shot dead. It is difficult to accept this as a journalist.”The PCI President urged the journalists around the country to come together in support of the murder. “I think all the journalists would come together and protest, and demand the arrest of the culprit,” he said. He demanded that the government should look into the matter and punish the culprit. He said, “The government should explain how this happened. They should book the culprit without further delay.”The moment the news of Lankesh’s murder broke out many fellow journalists, activists and celebrities expressed their shock and anger over the incident.”What happened was highly despicable. I expect the government of Karnataka to order an immediate probe and find the guilty and punish them,” journalist S. Venkat Narayan told ANI. Lauding Gauri’s effort and contribution in the field of journalism, Narayan said that the former was a secular, fearless journalist.”Lot of local politicians had filled case against her. The point is if one does not agree with what a person is writing, then he/she has the right to go to the court and challenge her and seek justice in judicial manner,” he said.Referring to the killing of activists like Kaliburgi, Govind Pansare, Narendra Dhabolkar and now Gauri Lankesh, another journalist Deepak Tiwari said that such incidents are not acceptable in a democracy.”This is something that is not acceptable in a democracy, where we stand for free voice and freedom of expression. All journalists like us support journalists fighting for freedom of expression,” he said.Tiwari said that the way Gauri was crusading the politics of communalism in the country is appreciable.Senior journalist Mallikarjun Siddannavar also criticised the killing of Lankesh and said, “She was very talented and had journalistic ideology. Killing was a very cruel act. The people of Karnataka and all the journalists condemn this act.”

Lalbaugcha Raja goes to Karachi

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The visual of crowds thronging the famous Lalbaugcha Raja is commonplace for most Mumbaikars. But, for the Hindu Maharashtrian community in Karachi, getting a replica of this Ganesh idol is a way to celebrate their tradition and tenuous link with their home state. The Marathi-speaking population of Karachi, which stands at 800, have installed a smaller replica of the idol at Shri Ratneshwar Mahadeo Temple in the city’s tony Clifton area.”We would watch the images and videos of Lalbaugcha Raja and Andhericha Raja on Facebook, the internet and television and feel deeply about it. We thought we too should have a replica of Lalbaugcha Raja in Karachi as Karachicha Raja,” said Vishal Rajput of the Shri Maharashtra Punchayat, an organisation of Maharashtrians in Karachi. He noted that the idol, originally made in India, had been sourced from Dubai by the Gaikwad family in Karachi. This was the first time that the Lalbaugcha Raja was making it to Karachi’s shores, he said, adding that the idol was immersed on Saturday, complete with dancing by community members.”Ganapati idols are made in Karachi as well. Apart from Maharashtrians, other communities too celebrate Ganeshotsav. The government supports us and provides us security,” Rajput said, adding there were around 35 to 40 Ganapatis in Karachi. The Ganesh festival is also celebrated at Ganesh Math Mandir in Dholi Khata, the Swami Narayan temple, Delhi Colony and Jinnah Madrasi Hindu Colony. In undivided India, Karachi was part of the Bombay presidency and had a thriving Maharashtrian community of around 25,000 members. The festival was celebrated for the first time in the city during the pre-Independence times by the late Krishna Naik at Mahadeo temple in Clifton. The city had two Marathi medium schools. Its first government school was named after Narayan Jugannath, a Maharashtrian. While few traces of the authority of Maharashtrians remain in Pakistan — the Marathas under Peshwa Balaji Bajirao’s brother Raghunathrao had spread the suzerainty of the Maratha empire till Attock in the mid-18th century.

Clerics divided on UP govt’s order to madrassas to videograph

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The decision to record Independence Day celebrations in madrassas (Islamic Schools) of Uttar Pradesh for the first time has evoked a mixed response from Muslim clerics. While one section of Muslim clerics is of the view that it will enhance “transparency and trust”, another feels that the “unusual order” questions the patriotism of the minority community. The Uttar Pradesh government recently directed all madrassas to hold celebrations on Independence Day and videograph the event, according to minority welfare minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary. According to an official circular, on Independence Day, flag hoisting and recitation of the national anthem should take place at 8 am. Following this, tributes should be paid to the martyrs of the freedom struggle. Students will sing songs on nationalism and will be told about the history of August 15 and freedom fighters, it said. Besides, cultural programmes will be organised on the theme of national unity, along with sports activities. Sweets will be distributed at the end of the session. The circular asks minority welfare officers to direct all madrassas to ensure that Independence Day is celebrated with zeal and all programmes mentioned in the directive are organised. Reacting to the directive, All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahli said the community has been celebrating Independence Day since 1947 in madrassas, hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem. “What is the intention behind the order?” he wondered. “If you (the UP government) have issued the same order and directives for all the schools, colleges and edcational institutes, then we have no objection. If it is only for madrassas, then it seems to be an unusual order. If it is only in madrassas, does it mean that our patriotism is being suspected?” he told(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)

SC to hear Asaram Bapu’s bail plea in Gujarat rape case

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –> The Supreme Court will today hear the plea filed by self styled accused godman, Asaram Bapu, in connection with a rape case registered against him in Gujarat. Earlier in April, the Supreme Court had asked Gujarat trial court to consider Asaram Bapu’s case urgently and finish the trial in a time bound manner. In another case registered against him, the apex court had earlier dismissed his bail plea in a Rajasthan harassment case, where a teenager had accused him of sexually assaulting her during celebrations in a village near Jodhpur ashram. The Jodhpur Police arrested Asaram on August 3, 2013 and since then, he is in prison. The apex court had in October last year sought the Centre’s response and five states on a plea seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI) probe into the alleged murder of children through black magic and attacks on ten witnesses in Asaram’s rape cases. Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai, has also been named in connection with a rape case registered against him by the Gujarat state. Sai was arrested for allegedly raping a Surat-based woman who was his father’s disciple between 2002 and 2005.
