140-year-old pocket watch, custom-ordered by Jamsetji Tata, to be auctioned on November 28

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>A rare 140-year-old pocket watch, custom-ordered by Tata Group founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, will be auctioned in Hong Kong on Tuesday for an estimated US $10,000- US $20,000 (Rs 6.4 lakh to Rs 12.8 lakh). The Patek Philippe pocket watch is an 18k pink gold timepiece and was gifted by Tata to English architect James Morris in 1890 in recognition of his work on the Tata family mansion, Esplanade House, in Mumbai. The watch is encased in a leather presentation box and is decorated with the architect’s monogram. The engraving on the back of the custom-made watch carries a dedication to Morris, in recognition of his “professional skill and of the care and attention devoted by him.”In an exclusive interview to WION, Thomas Perazzi, Head of watches at the Phillips Asia, said that during that period yellow gold was in vogue and commonly used but this watch used 18K Pink gold, making it a rare timepiece.Perazzi said three criteria – brand, its rare and complicated movement and backstory – determine the value of a watch both for collectors and auctioneers but the features of this rare Patek Philippe watch will always stand out as special. The Patek Philippe timepiece is a ‘repeating chronograph hunter case presentation watch’. “These pocket watches are fitted with a highly complicated movement, where you have 5 minutes repeater and chronograph,” he said. “It is a skill very few watchmakers had at that point in time”.Five-minute repeaters are sought after by fine collectors as rare masterpieces of precision mechanical engineering, he said. He said that the fact that it was owned by Jamshed Ji Tata and was a custom ordered time piece by him only adds to the watch’s value.”We don’t have records of Patek Philippe’s retail prices at that time. We can merely compare it to a present minute repeater price, which is over $300,000,” Perazzi said.
