Dera chief Ram Rahim acted like a ‘wild beast’, court observed during sentencing

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>On Monday, a special court at Rohtak prison compared Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh — who was convicted of rape last week, as a wild beast and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. “The court is of the view that when the convict did not even spare his own pious disciples and acted like a wild beast, he does not deserve any mercy,” special CBI judge Jagdeep Sharma said at the makeshift court in the district jail of Sunaria, Haryana, where the trial for quantum of sentencing took place. Sharma concurred with a Supreme Court observation that rape is not merely a physical assault; it destroys the whole personality of the victim. The two victims had put the Dera Chief on the pedestal of god and had revered him accordingly. However, the convict committed “the breach of gravest nature by sexually assaulting such gullible and blind followers.” He further intimidated them of dire consequences and as such did not deserve the sympathy of the court.

The court observed that the offence, and the manner in which it was committed must be taken into consideration. The idea behind punishing an individual is to create a deterrent not only for him but also for the society at large.
ALSO READ Full CBI statement explaining why Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh got 20-year sentence instead of 10Undue sympathy in such a case would do more harm to the justice dispensation system and impact the public’s confidence in the law. “A man who has no concern for humanity, nor has any mercy in his nature do not deserve the leniency of this court,” Sharma said.
ALSO READ Jagdeep Singh: Judge who sent Gurmeet Ram Rahim for 20 years in jailThe court also considered Singh’s wealth while imposing costs to the tune of Rs 15 lakhs. The victims would be granted Rs 14 lakh towards their compensation and rehabilitation. The court was of the view that showing undue sympathy in such cases would do more harm to the justice dispensation system and affect the trust of the people in courts. Apart from the rights of the victim, the collective conscience of the society must also be considered. “In a way, it is an obligation to the society which has reposed its faith in the courts to curtail evil,” the special judge observed. “The conception of mercy has its own space but it cannot occupy the entire accommodation.”“To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man’s injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man’s superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not greater courage? Without her man could not be. If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with woman… Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman?,” the order read, quoting Mahatma Gandhi. During arguments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the agency that probed the case, contended that the Dera chief committed sexual assault on the victims who treated him like their father and used to worship him as God. By committing this crime, he had shattered the faith and exploited his victims. The CBI further added that since the victims stayed on the premises along with the convict, the heinous crime committed was no less than custodial rape.CBI further contended that the convict was a very influential figure and must be sentenced appropriately to send a deterring message to potential offenders. Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim repeatedly cried, howled, whimpered and begged for mercy after a special CBI court on Monday sentenced him to 20 years in jail and fined him Rs 30 lakh for raping two of his followers in 2002. The court read out two sentences of 10 years in jail and Rs 15 lakh fine for each of the two cases. Both sentences will run consecutively. The order came two days after Ram Rahim’s conviction triggered large-scale violence and left 38 people dead in Haryana.

Honey Preet and Vipassna: The women who control Dera Sacha Sauda now

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>From dusty, nondescript Fatehabad to sprawling campus of Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsa, Priyanka Taneja aka Honey Preet Insan has come a long distance.Honey Preet Insan, who has been the shadow of rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for past few days is likely to head Dera Sacha Sauda, the latest reports suggest. Her official page identifies her as ‘great daughter of an amazing father’.But how Honey Preet rose in ranks at the Dera is an intriguing story. It was in 1999 when Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh got Priyanka Taneja married to one Vishwas Gupta, a Dera follower, and gave her the name Honey Preet Insan. However, marital bliss eluded Honey Preet and she complained to Gurmeet Ram Rahim that her in-laws were harassing her for dowry. After 10 years of constant bickering, Honey Preet moved to the Dera along with her husband and Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh adopted both of them in 2009.This adoption helped Vishwas Gupta in his business and Honey Preet grew closer to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. But things took a strange turn, when Vishwas Gupta filed for divorce in Punjab and Haryana High court in 2011. In his plea, he accused Honey Preet of having an ‘illicit relationship’ with the Baba. He also accused the Dera chief of keeping his wife away from him. Soon, the court granted them divorce.Though Honey Preet is understood to be Dera chief’s successor, Ram Rahim had anointed his son Jasmeet as his successor after he was made an accused in the rape and sexual exploitation case in 2007.Her social media accounts describe her as “PAPA’s ANGEL, Philanthropist, Director, Editor, Actress!! Passionate to transform my Rockstar Papa’s directions into actions!”With over 5 lakh followers on her Facebook page, Honey Preet’s timeline is full of posts glorifying her ‘papa’.She has acted opposite him in movies such as MSG 2 and MSG- The Warrior Lion Heart.“This ‘Baap Beti ki Jodi’ has set a benchmark through hard work,” her official page talks about her cinematic triumphs.Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is married to Harjeet Kaur. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Dera Sacha Sauda mayhem, which left 36 people dead and over 250 injured, happened due to “political hesitation” and “politician procrastination”, said retired Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Parkash Singh. “It was Haryana government’s abject surrender to lumpen elements,” said Singh, who had earlier been assigned with the job of preparing fact-finding report on last year’s Jat agitation. Also senior bureaucrats in the Union Home ministry blamed the Haryana government saying it was complete failure on part of state government and the state administration willfully surrendered before the miscreants. Seeing the situation, they stated that there was no communication between the force on the ground and senior officers. “It looks like no instruction was issued from senior police officers to deal with the mob,” said a senior bureaucrat adding that everyone in the state administration is accountable for deaths.Speaking to DNA, Singh slammed the Haryana government and Centre for its inept handling of the mayhem. “It is not just a responsibility of the Director General of Police of Haryana. He does not act in vacuum. He operates within the limitation and directions of state government,” he said.He stated that police had failed to act under political pressure. “Everyone is responsible… the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and of course the Director General of Police.”After facing flak for the Jat violence, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had set up the fact-finding committee under Singh to probe the lapses.Singh said that during Jat agitation, it was complete “collapse” of state machinery and administration but during Dera Sacha Sauda mayhem it was “failure” on part of state machinery and administration. He further pointed out that the state was aware about that mayhem would happen but they failed to act.He also stated that now the police defend themselves saying the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC were issued. But these prohibitory orders had serious lacunae. The order only prohibited people from carrying weapons, there was no prohibition on the entry of five or more people. “They come up with defence that it was clerical error. It is just unacceptable,” he said.He said that he saw forces running away from a bunch of protestors. “I don’t know which force they belonged to, but I feel ashamed that these things continue to happen in the state even after a year. The other thing that needs to be investigated, apart from the ‘clerical error’, is the police’s running away from the scene. Dera Sacha Sauda followers weren’t armed with sophisticated weapons. I’m ashamed that the police have not changed at all in this one year”Prakash Singh is a retired IPS officer, who served as the chief of UP Police, BSF and Assam Police. More recently, he conducted an inquiry into the 2016 Jat agitation, based on which some officers were held guilty and punished for abetting riots.Singh said Khattar had asked him to stop working on his second report after the Jat violence that was to focus on police reforms and operational autonomy for the force. In his first report about the Jat violence, Singh had slammed the police brass and alleged an administrative paralysis. “The highest functionaries in the government failed to show the kind of guidance, direction and control” expected in a crisis, he had written.

Cops book Dera chief spokesman for sedition

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Haryana Police on Sunday booked Dera Sacha Sauda’s Chief Spokesperson Aditya Insaan for sedition and waging war against the State following orders from the Punjab and Haryana High Court that had directed cops to investigate news reports stating that he had instigated crowds in Panchkula on Friday.”Guruji (Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh) ka sir kaatne ki baat ki jaati hai. In logon ko boycott kiya ja raha hai yahan. Kaha ja raha hai ki ye dusre darje ke naagrik hain. Aapko wo haq nahi milenge. Aap ghatiya ho. Aap neech ho. Kya inko jeene ka haq nahi hai?” Aditya Insaan had reportedly said while talking to the media in Panchkula’s Sector 4 on Friday, even as thousands of Dera followers sitting behind him looked on.An hour before Ram Rahim was pronounced guilty on rape charges by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court in Panchkula, Aditya Insaan had met thousands of Dera followers sitting on roads, awaiting the verdict. He had blamed the media for running a trial that led to the Dera chief’s conviction.Minutes later, mobs went on the rampage and 36 people were killed in widespread violence, arson and police firing.”If reporters stand by their reports, the police must register an FIR,” the court had directed the Haryana government, adding that the law must take its own course. When asked by the media why followers did not return home after the Dera chief’s appeal a night before the hearing, Aditya Insaan had said it was a culmination of suppression of the last 15 years. An ophthalmologist who studied at AIIMS and now heads the eye bank of one of the largest hospital chains operated by the Dera, Aditya Insaan had invoked incidents from the past and blamed the media, “Humein kaha jaata hai, ki ye log manhoos hai. Ye log behuda hai. Ye log ghatiya hai. In logon ko desh ki aabo-hawa mein, iss savindhan ke andar barabari ke haq se jeene ka adhikar nai.”When asked, if his words will end up instigating the followers, he had said, “Understand the pain that Dera followers bear.””There are under-privileged persons, old women, children sitting in gatherings and they are being told, ‘Ye yahan baithe kyun hai? Inko jeene ka haq nai hai.’ Some people are saying that the police will use pellets at them. Are they pelting stones at the Army like they do in Jammu and Kashmir? Are they helping militants escape?” Aditya Insaan had asked. He has been associated with the Dera for the last two decades.

These coins, engraved with the words ‘Dhan Dhan Satguru Tera hi Asara, Dera Sacha Sauda Sirsa’, can then be used by the customer to buy items at the ‘Sach’ shops later. In case a shopkeeper does not have any change at his disposal if a customer pays Rs 100 for an item that costs Rs 70, the latter may have to make do with three plastic tokens of Rs 10 value each . The Dera campus is spread over nearly 1,000 acres and is a township on its own, with schools, a sports village, a hospital and a cinema hall. Shopkeepers who run ‘Sach’ shops near the Dera headquarters have a different colour code for such plastic coins.

India imposes curfew as "godman" faces rape verdict

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>A northern Indian town imposed a curfew and ordered thousands of followers of a self-styled “godman” to home as he headed to court on Friday for a decision in a rape trial that has raised fears of mass unrest. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the head of a social welfare and spiritual group, commands a following that he claims in the millions, many of whom have been in the streets since Thursday, protesting his innocence. Singh, a burly, bearded man who has scripted and starred in his own films, is accused of raping two women followers in a case dating back to 2002 at the headquarters of his Dera Sacha Sauda group in the town of Sirsa. The town ordered an indefinite curfew to stop his followers from gathering but thousands had already left for the town of Panchkula where a court was due to give its verdict. Singh drove in a convoy of cars from his Sirsa headquarters to the court down a deserted highway, accompanied by hundreds of police. Ram Niwas, a senior government official, said mobile internet services had also been suspended in the states of Haryana and Punjab to stop people from spreading rumours and causing unrest. The army was on standby. In 2014, the attempted arrest of another guru on murder charges ended with his followers attacking police with clubs and stones. Singh denies the rape charge against him and called on his followers through a video message to remain peaceful. “We all must respect the law and maintain peace,” he said. Indian godmen can summon thousands of supporters on to the streets at the drop of a hat. Their systems of patronage and quasi-religious sermons are hugely popular with people who consider the government has failed them. But few are as controversial as Singh. Besides the rape charges, Singh is also under investigation over allegations that he convinced 400 of his male followers to undergo castration, allegations he denies. A variety of reasons have been given for why the men agreed to castration, including promises of becoming closer to god. Singh’s two films, “Messenger of God” and its sequel, include sequences in which he fights off villains and tosses burning motorbikes into the air.(This article has not been edited by DNA’s editorial team and is auto-generated from an agency feed.)
