In a first, solar power projects planned on dams

The Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MahaGenco) is planning to develop solar power projects on dams in its first such attempt in the state. These floating solar panels will do away with the need for the state-owned utility to acquire land to add capacity to its renewable energy portfolio and also reduce the evaporation of water from these reservoirs. The MahaGenco plans to develop solar power worth 250 MW capacity through this route. “We are planning solar power projects on dams and have initiated pre-feasibility studies. In the initial phase, these panels will be set up on our own reservoirs, such as the Irai dam at Chandrapur which supplies water to the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station (CSTPS), after which we can take up work on the irrigation department’s resources,” a senior MahaGenco official told DNA.The projects are likely to be set up in the public private partnership (PPP) route through tariff-based competitive bidding. The MahaGenco is also considering some dams owned by the water resources department, including those in Vidarbha and the Ujani dam at Solapur, for adding solar power capacity.A senior water resources department official said they were willing to allow the setup of such projects on dams as these solar panels will reduce evaporation and make more water available for end-users. “We are willing to give a 2,000 hectare water area (surface area of the dam) of the 34,000 hectare total water area at Ujani. This will be an experimental project,” said another official from the department. At present, the MahaGenco has 180 MW grid-connected solar power capacity, including 5 MW at Chandrapur, 125 MW at Sakhri in Dhule and 50 MW at Baramati. It has 10,580 MW installed thermal power generation capacity and plans to add further capacity largely in renewables. The new renewable energy policy approved by the state government aims at creating 14,400 MW of fresh grid-connected installed capacity in the sector by 2020.This includes 7,500 MW from solar energy of which the MahaGenco will undertake works on 2,500 MW with the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) contributing the rest. Of this 2,500 MW, the generation utility plans to add 500 MW on its own lands on EPC basis and 500 MW through the solar park at Dondaicha in Dhule. Around 1,500 MW will come through sources including the grid-connected solar agriculture feeder scheme for which letters of intent for 204 MW have been issued, solar lift irrigation schemes including 65 MW at Mor dam in Jalgaon and 60 MW Tembhu in Sangli and the floating solar panels on dams.FIRST OF ITS KINDMahaGenco plans to develop solar powere worth 250 MW capacity First plant to be setup on Irai dam in Chandrapur Dams located in Vidarbha, Ujani and Solapur being considered

Rlys revives plan to take Harbour route till Borivli

The space constraint in Mumbai, could force the railways to either build an elevated rail line or elevate the existing road outside Malad station on the west for ensuring that the Harbour line is extended all the way till Borivli. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has revived the old plan of extending the Harbour line further from Andheri to Borivli, which it had first proposed in 2007.DNA had on November 30 reported on the proposed extension of Harbour line till Borivali – Railways plan to integrate big-ticket projects; elevated corridor may go.By end of this month, the MRVC intends to extend the Harbour line till Goregaon, which will mean that people boarding trains from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) can now go till Goregaon. At present the authorities are working on the basic plan on how to extend the Harbour line till Borivli. “There is no land available at Malad and it is too congested on the west side as the station immediately opens up onto shops and the road,” said a MRVC official on condition of anonymity. This is the reason they are contemplating two things — either take the rail tracks at an elevation as the Harbour line approaches Malad with road going below it. Or ask the civic authorities to remove encroachments, shift shops and allow rail tracks to go all the way towards Kandivli. The officials said that the road can then be taken as a flyover for the vehicles to pass. At Thane, similar exercise has been done as the authorities have implemented Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme where the railway officials claim that there was sufficient space available for them. However at Malad there is space constraint for an elaborate elevated road to be constructed and that they will have to work out a proper plan. The railway planners stated that at Kandivali, there is space available on the west for the platforms to come up for the Harbour line. At Borivali station, the platform 1-2 can be used for the purpose of terminating trains on Harbour line. Once the Harbour line gets extended till Borivali it would mean that there would slow and fast corridors with two lines each, and at the same time work on 5th and 6th lines – meant for long distance trains – are also underway. The cost of this Harbour line extension till Borivali is yet to be calculated.Currently if a commuter wants to travel on the Harbour line to Navi Mumbai then he either changes at Wadala or catches a train that is going towards Panvel. However the number of trains on Panvel-Andheri/Bandra route is lesser in numbers. At present there are three different rail lines on the Mumbai suburban network – Western Railway runs train services on Churchgate-Dahanu route, Main line on CSMT-Karjat/Kasara and Harbour line on CSMT-Andheri/Panvel that is operated by the Central Railway.ELEVATED ROUTEUnder the plan, authorities will explore building either an elevated rail line or elevate the existing road outside Malad station, where space is a huge constraint

The BJP State President Mahendra Nath Singh, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dr Dinesh Sharma will also be there with Shah and Yogi Adityanath. Among projects which will be launched by them include Sainik School, a FM radio Station, three ITIs at Tiloi, Jagdishpur and Gauriganj and two Agriculture Science Centres. Shah’s visit was planned much ahead. It was due to this reason Amethi district administration had showed inability to provide security to Rahul on such a short notice. The Congress Vice-President during his three-day visit had alleged that BJP leaders were out to credit of worked done by him and the UPA government in Amethi. He showed a list of about a dozen projects whose foundation stone was laid by him but BJP was now trying to take the credit by inaugurating them on October 10. Rahul said that he had laid foundation stone for FM Radio Station, 200-bed hospital in Tiloi, Sanik School in Gauriganj, Rajiv Gandhi Civil Aviation National University in Fursatganj, new SAIL unit in Jagdishpur, Institute of Hotel Management and Central School.“They have nothing to showcase as their achievement so they are inaugurating projects launched by the UPA to misguide people of the country,” he alleged.“If Rahulji was so concerned about the people of Amethi then he should have ensured to get these projects completed during his government. Modiji not only lay foundation stone but also ensures that he inaugurates that projects,” reacted Vijay Bahadur Pathak, BJP State General Secretary to Rahul’s charge. After Amethi, Amit Shah plans to hold rallies in Azamgarh, Kannauj, Mainpuri, Badayun and Ferozabad to make a dent into Yadav-clan held Samajwadi Party parliamentary seats.
