Day after Army chief’s LoC visit, Pak troops kill jawan

A day after Army chief General Bipin Rawat visited the forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC), the Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian forward positions, killing a jawan, in the Nowshera sector of Rajouri district in Jammu division on Sunday. The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday, when Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire and fired indiscriminately on the Indian forward posts along the LoC in the Nowshera sector. The Indian Army troops immediately swung into action and retaliated in equal measure to silence the Pakistani guns.”In the exchange of fire, however, Sepoy Jagsir Singh was grievously injured and later succumbed,” said Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at the Northern Command.Hailing from village Lohgarh, Thakhran Wala, district Firozepur of Punjab, Sepoy Jagsir Singh, 32, is survived by wife Mohinder Pall Kaur, two daughters, and a son.”Sepoy Jagsir Singh was a brave and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” Colonel Joshi said. The ceasefire violation comes just a day after the chief of the Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat, visited the forward posts in Rajouri and exhorted the troops to continue to remain “vigilant and ever-ready”.Pakistan’s latest provocation also comes six days after the Indian Army troops, in a tit-for-tat action, crossed the LoC and killed three Pakistani Army men in Rawalakot sector of Poonch on Monday. The attack was carried out 48 hours after four Army soldiers, including a Major, were killed by the Pakistan Army on December 23.Meanwhile, figures presented in the Lok Sabha have revealed that Pakistan violated the ceasefire along the LoC in J&K 771 times, till December 10 this year, and 110 times along the International Border (IB) till November-end. Nearly 30 people, including 14 Army personnel, 12 civilians, and four BSF personnel, were killed in these ceasefire violations this year. Also, last year, 449 incidents of ceasefire violations were reported, in which 13 civilians and 13 security personnel were killed and 83 civilians and 99 security personnel were injured. The truce between India and Pakistan along the IB, the LoC, and the Actual Ground Position Line in Siachen glacier came into force in November, 2003.

RK Nagar bypoll: 4 big takeaways from TTV Dhinakaran’s stunning win

TTV Dhinakaran on Sunday won a stunning victory as an independent candidate from former Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa’s RK Nagar constituency. He made a rather audacious prediction after his win claiming that the ruling AIADMK government will not last more than three months. Dhinakaran’s win over AIADMK and DMK candidates have definitely added a new angle to Tamil Nadu politics and has clearly indicated that the churn which started after passing away of J Jayalalithaa is unlikely to stop anytime soon. Here are some of the big pointers from Dhinakaran’s Sunday surprise:Also readRK Nagar bypoll: Dhinakaran rises against all odds to stump rivals 1. Dhinakaran is here to stay:Battling corruption cases and collective might of AIADMK, it was perfectly possible that TTV Dhinakaran’s rebellion would have ended tamely. At the end of the day, Tamil Nadu is famously bi-polar and there is very little space for a third pole. However Dhinakaran by winning the prestigious RK Nagar battle has shown that he isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon. Whether he comes good on his promise to make a political earthquake in Tamil Nadu remains to be seen, but this election result has given him the political oxygen to fight another day. And for voters of RK Nagar, TTV Dhinakaran truly is the torchbearer of Amma’s legacy. Also readTTV Dhinakaran wins RK Nagar bypoll, DMK and BJP candidates lose deposit2. Troubling times for AIADMK: The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu is in a fragile state, with a very unstable peace deal between the OPS and EPS camp. Now, with the Dhinakaran camp scoring this major win, the fragile unity will be severely tested. It’s clear that large number of voters and foot soldiers have their allegiance towards VK Sasikala’s nephew Dhinakaran. Will the elected legislators also change their affinity sensing the groundswell of support for Dhinakaran. Will there be a beeline to join the list of 18 currently suspended MLAs who have pledged their allegiance to Dhinakaran? Will either of OPS or EPS group try to side with him? And the million dollar question of who the voters will finally perceive as the ‘real’ AIADMK? The jury is out on all these questions, but both O Palaniswami and E Panneerselvam have their task cut out for sure. 3. DMK in disarray: There are conspiracy theories floating around about DMK taking it easy and transferring votes to Dhinakaran, to stir the AIADMK pot. But it’s hard to believe that the party would ensure such engineering where it ends up losing its deposit. It’s embarrassing for the major opposition party in the state and would further make Stalin’s job difficult. DMK is yet to revive from its assembly poll defeat last year, but with Lok Sabha polls barely an year and half away, it doesn’t have too much time to regroup. RK Nagar may have been an one-off, a referendum about Amma’s true legacy which sidelined DMK, but the party would try to avoid such slip-up in the future. The 2G verdict has definitely come as shot in arm for DMK, and it remains to be seen whether it can leverage it politically. 4. BJP continues to be non-existent: BJP, despite its best efforts, continues to be a virtual non-entity in Tamil Nadu. And RK Nagar was no exception, with the party candidate getting even lesser votes than NOTA. The BJP at Centre has given tacit support to AIADMK in the state, but that hasn’t helped in the party’s growth in Tamil Nadu. As Subramanian Swamy said, it is time to fix accountability in Tamil Nadu. BJP and Amit Shah will probably need more than a few visits to fix party’s condition in the southern state.

Yogi Adityanath ignores ‘Noida jinx’, visits city to oversee preparations ahead of PM’s visit

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ignored the long standing ‘Noida Jinx’ by visiting the most advanced city in the state, which is also part of the NCR region, on Saturday. Before leaving for the ‘jinxed’ city, the Chief Minister stated that he and his government do not believe in ‘superstition’. “My government is here to serve the people of the state than to believe in such superstitions. I would continue to work for the development of state even if I have to lose my chair,” said Yogi Adityanath. The Chief Minister visited Noida to oversee preparations and review security and other arrangements for the launch of the much-publicized Magenta Metro Line from Botanical Garden in Noida to Kalkaji. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the new Metro train on Sunday, to celebrate the birthday of the ailing former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Also readYogi Adityanath to break ‘Noida jinx’, will meet PM Modi on Dec 25 Jinx and superstition surrounding Noida began in 1988 when ex-Chef Minister late Veer Bahadur Singh visited Noida and lost his chair and elections. In 1989, the former Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari too lost his government after visiting Noida in the wake of controversial shilanyas near the disputed site in Ayodhya.Kalyan Singh was the third victim of the ‘Noida jinx’ when he too lost his government in 1993 assembly polls after visiting Noida. The BSP withdrew support from the Mulayam government in 1995 after he visited the ‘jinxed city’.Since then the superstition went deep in the minds of all subsequent Chief Ministers and they were wary and scared of visiting Noida for the fear of losing their governments. Be it Rajnath Singh, Mulayam Singh Yadav, or next generation politician Akhilesh Yadav, they all stayed away from Noida due to the jinx attached to it.Mayawati was the only exception when she had dared to break the jinx by visiting Noida in 2011 to inaugurate Dr Ambedkar Memorial Park. But she too lost assembly polls in 2012 within a year. Though Akhilesh had promised to visit but he refrained from visiting Noida during his tenure as the Chief Minister launching all related projects from his official residence 5, Kalidas Marg. When the 45-year-old BJP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was reminded of the ‘Noida Jinx’, officials confided that he laughed over it saying that his government’s priority was development of the state than to pay and heed to any superstition related to Noida. He said that he will break the jinx.On Saturday, he kept his promise and landed at Noida by a chopper around 3 pm. From there he straight away drove to the Millennium City where Sunday’s flag off ceremony of Magenta Metro line is to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

UP Police looks to ensure peaceful Christmas after Hindu Jagran Manch’s warning to Aligarh schools

The Uttar Pradesh Police today directed all district police chiefs to ensure that Christmas festivities go smoothly without any untoward incident, two days after the Hindu Jagran Manch warned Aligarh schools against celebrating the festival.ADG (Law and Order) Anand Kumar also directed all district police chiefs of the state to ensure the freedom of practising one’s religion is protected and appropriate action should be taken in this regard. “The Aligarh SSP (senior superintendent of police) and all district police chiefs have been directed to take strict legal action against those indulging in intimidation of any sort,” he said. This directive comes after the Hindu Jagran Manch, an RSS affiliate, issued a circular on Sunday, threatening the management of all Aligarh schools against celebrating Christmas saying, if they did so, it would be “at their own risk”. “The circular would be reaching all schools very shortly and we will decide a course of action on receiving their response,” Sonu Savita, city president of the Hindu Jagran Manch, told reporters in Aligarh on Sunday. Aligarh SSP Rajesh Pandey has, however, made it clear that the district authorities would not allow anyone to force any school not to observe or celebrate Christmas. Also readDon’t celebrate Christmas where Hindu students are majority: Hindu outfit warns Aligarh schoolsAll school managements have been assured that full security would be provided to them on Christmas and no one would be allowed to take law into their own hands, Pandey told PTI yesterday. Expressing concern over this, Praveen Agarwal, president of the Public School Development Society (Aligarh), said, “Each year we celebrate festivals belonging to all communities and this experience helps our children to play a responsible role as citizens of this country.”The Manch was in the news last month when it announced its decision to launch a “reverse love jihad” campaign by setting a target of 2,100 Muslim brides for Hindu men in the next six months under a campaign called “beti bachao, bahu lao”. Last year, the right-wing group launched its “anti-love jihad” and “save Hindu girl” campaign in Uttar Pradesh, where they planned to hold classes in all schools run by its parent organisation to “educate” youngsters about the “ill-effects” of marrying a Muslim.

Development without discrimination govt’s only agenda: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi to minority communities

To establish direct dialogue with the minorities, the Union minority ministry on Sunday held a “Progress Panchayat” at Kishangarh Bas in Alwar, Rajasthan. The initiative was launched in 2016 from Mewat in Haryana so that policies could be trimmed according to their needs and delivery of schemes could be ensured to encourage their mainstreaming.Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the Modi Government was “determined to development without any discrimination” and that “we have ensured that all sections of the society including Minorities are becoming an equal partner of development process”.Addressing the panchayat, Naqvi said that by defeating those people who wanted to disrupt the process of development, the government was following the path of “empowerment without appeasement” and “development with dignity” so that the “light of development” reached all the needy sections.Attacking the previous Congress regimes, Naqvi said the blockade of “loot lobby” from “power corridors” had ensured that each and every penny of the government money was being utilised for the welfare of the needy. “Some people are unable to digest the atmosphere of trust and development created by the Modi Government. These people are trying to disturb the atmosphere of development through their negative agenda. But, the Modi Government will not allow any destructive agenda to dominate our development agenda.”Naqvi said his ministry’s schemes such as “Hunar Haat”, “Seekho aur Kamao”, “Nai Manzil”, “Gharib Nawaz Skill Development Scheme”, “Nai Roushni” have proved to be an important step towards the skill development of minorities. In the past three years, these schemes have succeeded in providing job opportunities to more than 50 lakh people from minority communities.

These reforms have been pending for a long time,” the minister said.Speaking about the reforms in education system, Jaitley said, “We have one of the largest population which can be either asset or liability. There is a demographic difference in the world where population of some of the economies in the world is going down. India looks at this demographic difference as an opportunity to create trained human resources which will not only serve the Indian economy but those economies where population is going down.””Unlike in the past, today’s world has become highly competitive. In this competition, merit will take students forward than anything else. There is a huge space of excellence waiting for a talent in the society,” Jaitley said.

Assembly elections 2017: Headquarters empty but Congress confident

The Congress headquarters at 24 Akbar Road wore a somewhat deserted look on Sunday, while just a day before, it was bubbling with activity as Rahul Gandhi took over as the party’s new president. Most of the rooms were locked, with office-bearers and general secretaries preferring to make a beeline at the Tughlaq Road residence of the new president, who has been meeting delegations from across the country.A few members of the party’s media unit were seen overseeing the setting up of a giant TV screen to transmit results. Workers were still dismantling the huge tent that had been erected for the Saturday function. In the back lawns, some employees were playing cards while monkeys swarmed the premises to seek leftovers from the Saturday bash.DNA spoke to a number of leaders on the phone, who said that Rahul presided over a meeting in the morning to finalise preparations for the counting day.The media unit has put up a list of 69 spokespersons and panelists, who will be available to the media for reactions as the counting progresses.A worker at the canteen said no special preparations have been made for a victory. “As of now, no leader has told us anything. We will serve sweets to everybody but no special preparations are underway,” he said. The war room at 15 Gurudwara Rakabganj Road, under the supervision of actor-turned-politician Divya Ramya Spandana, has been augmented to show social media presence during the day.The unit is working closely with the party’s communication and research department. During the Gujarat polls, it was working overtime to ensure that Rahul’s campaign was captured well. A duty roaster was prepared according to his schedule, which had at least two social media team members present in advance. They worked as flying squads, making video clips, and clicking photographs to add dynamism to the election rally.Meanwhile, dismissing the exit poll results, Pramood Tiwari, a Congress leader from UP, said there was no question of the party sitting in opposition in either Gujarat or HP. “We are 200 per cent sure that we will form the government and not sit in the Opposition,” he said, putting up a brave face. He added that he himself visited the state and was sure that the exit polls would be proved wrong.

Shame! In India, 2 women harassed daily at workplace: National Commission for Women 2017 report

India may surpass first world nation in terms of economic growth, but when it comes to women empowerment, the Asian giant cuts a sorry figure. The latest numbers from the National Commission for Women report just proves the pathetic state of affairs.Sample this – two women were harassed at their workplace daily in 2017, with Uttar Pradesh topping the ‘shame list’.The women panel’s report for the year 2017 says that on an average, the NCW received 1.7 complaints per day, a Times of India report said on Sunday. The Commission got 539 complaints with maximum coming from UP, Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. But the panel feels that this is just a minuscule number, a tip of the proverbial iceberg as majority of victims still don’t report such matter either to the local police or to the Commission. In last four years, the Commission has received just 1,971 complaints. With #MeToo trending all this year in post Harvey Weinstein expose era, there has been a greater understanding among the women about this issue. Now, the stigma attached to such cases is giving way to women speaking openly about their horrifying experiences. The trend was also responsible for finally making the Indian Inc responsible towards the issue with the Corporate Ministry making it mandatory for all companies to make full disclosure on their compliance with the Sexual Harassment Act.It should be noted that this was a two-year-old demand by the Maneka Gandhi’s ministry, which was accepted only in 2017.

The CPI(M) has in turn, accused BJP and RSS of resorting to violence and denied the involvement of its government and leadership in political killings. The murder of the activist in November promoted BJP President Amit Shah to ask Kerala CM , and asked what his government was doing to “curb criminal elements” in the ranks of his CPI(M).Shah blamed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for the political killings in the state and said that “More than 120 BJP and RSS workers have been murdered in Kerala so far. Act against terror in haste, V-P M Venkaiah Naidu tells UN

Asserting that commitment to human rights is a part of Indian culture, and that India has respected the rights of others since time immemorial, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu asked the world community, especially the UN, to take firm action against countries who indulge in terror and rights violation as a “state policy”.Asserting that Indian government, be it the present one or the earlier ones, believed in peaceful coexistence, he said some countries with terrorism as state policy are aiding, abetting and funding terror.”I hope that UN security council will complete consultations at the earliest and come to a conclusion to take firm action against terror, else peaceful coexistence will become difficult,” Naidu said.”We all believe in Sarve Jana Sukhna Bhavantu, that is, all people should live together peacefully, and we believe in the principle of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam, that the entire universe is one family. Even the so-called discussion on civil rights and minority rights are not guaranteed simply because of Constitution, but because they are in our DNA,” said Naidu.Naidu was speaking at a function held by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to commemorate the World Human Rights Day at Vigyan Bhawan on Sunday.Naidu said secularism, which was included in the Constitution at a later date, is ingrained in our DNA from the beginning.Conceding that there are definitely some incidents (of human rights violation), Naidu said they need to be condemned, isolated and dealt strictly by the government and meted out punishment to act as a deterrent.Terming caste and communalism as major challenges to Indian democracy that have potential to disrupt peaceful coexistence in the muti-cultural and multi-religious Indian society, Naidu said these challenges are sometimes exploited for personal, political and sectarian gains which needs to tackled.Naidu also took a dig on human rights organisations who come out to protect terrorists who kill others and then come and seek their human rights.

NGT slams Delhi government, asks why Kotla match held

India’s top environment court pulled up the AAP government on Monday for inadequate action on pollution and criticised authorities for holding the India-Sri Lanka Test in the city despite bad air quality. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had sought a comprehensive action plan on ways to deal with severe air pollution. On Monday, the Delhi government sought more time, but the tribunal said the report must be filed within the next 48 hours. On Sunday, the match being played at the Feroz Shah Kotla had to be halted for 17 minutes after Sri Lankan players complained of poor air quality. Their coach Nic Pothas said players vomited, and oxygen cylinders had been kept in the dressing room.”Every newspaper has been carrying headline that air pollution was going to be higher this week. Still you took no action. Even the players were playing match wearing masks. You should have not held the match if the air quality was so bad. Are people of Delhi supposed to bear this?” the NGT said.It said that the pollution in the city has already reached alarming levels yet the government was adopting a lackadaisical approach in dealing with the situation.”Where is your action plan? Why have you not submitted it? What can we do if you keep on changing everybody? It’s not our problem if people don’t want to stick to you. You keep on doing meetings but tell us a single action or step you have taken in the last four days to combat air pollution,” the NGT said.(With PTI inputs)

Hardik Patel case: NCW team to meet aggrieved girl

The National Commission of Women (NCW) on Sunday said they were dispatching a team to Surat headed by acting chairperson Rekha Sharma to investigate the alleged sexual exploitation of a woman by PAAS leader Hardik Patel. A representative of the women’s body said they received a complaint from a person whose name was not disclosed by the NCW.”The girl herself is not the complainant in the complaint sent to NCW. However, the complaint contains personal information about a girl who wishes to talk to the Commission confidentially as she is scared to come forward,” said the representative, adding that Sharma will talk to the media once the team has spoken to the girl and investigated the matter.”There had been a viral sex CD featuring PAAS convenor Hardik Patel on social media. It seems that due to such behaviour by Hardik Patel, the sentiments of people of Gujarat have been hurt. I feel that both the women in the CD have been promised of post and money and have been sexually exploited,” read the complaint. The complaint also mentions audio clips of a woman that has allegedly gone viral on social media in which the woman says that she fears defamation and has hence refrained from coming out.The complaint further states that as Hardik Patel has termed the CD fake, FSL testing of the CD should be done to test its authenticity and to safeguard “voter’s interest” as with the upcoming elections, people need to know if Hardik is a rapist. This is the second complaint against the videos of Patel that went viral. A Delhi-based lawyer Gaurav Gulati had also registered a complaint to the NCW to carry out legal action.
