Rationalist team spends night at West Bengal station listed as ‘haunted’ by Railways

A group of rationalists spent a winter night in the small obscure railway station in West Bengal’s Purulia district, which had been recorded as ‘haunted’ by the Railways, to bust the myth. The group found a few locals trying to scare them away from the station on Thursday night instead of any paranormal presence, a member of the rationalist group said today.Begunkodor station, located near the Ayodhya Hills and 50 km from Purulia town, had earned the distinction of being a ‘ghost station’ after 1967, the year its station master had reportedly died after seeing a white sari clad woman walking along the tracks in the night. The incident had caused passengers to desert the station and it had come to be known as ‘haunted’ in the Railways records.Begunkodor had been closed since then and was listed by Railways as one of its 10 ‘haunted’ stations in India. The station was reopened 42 long years later in 2009 by Mamata Banerjee during her tenure as the railways minister.Since then trains stopped at this obscure station and passengers used it only till 5 pm scared of encounters with the ghosts.A nine-member team of the rationalist organisation Paschim Banga Bigyan Manch, armed with torches, digital compasses and cameras, had camped at this station with police protection on Thursday night and busted the decades-old myth.Nayan Mukherjee, who led the team said, “We were at the Begunkodor station in Purulia district from 11 pm on Thursday night till the early morning hours the next day but there was no nocturnal activity.”He said the team did not see the ghost of a woman who is said to have committed suicide years ago or the apparition of the station master, who reportedly haunt the station. “We could only spot a snake in an adjacent well,” Mukherjee said.He said, the team had heard a peculiar noise from the darkness behind the station building deep in the night. “When we focussed the torch light on the surrounding bush at around 2 AM we saw four to five people, who appeared to be locals fleeing from the spot. We chased them for a while but they ran away.”The station was being touted by certain people for some time as a ‘ghost tourism’ spot to attract visitors. Some of the locals apparently scare them away with the noise and steal their belongings after they flee out of fear, he said. The digital compasses and cameras installed in the station compound by the team did not pick up any sign of paranormal activity, Mukherjee said. The Superintendent of Police of Purulia district Joy Biswas said the team had asked for police protection which was given to them.He said the police and the administration were aware that Begunkodor station was known as a ‘ghost station’ among the locals and had started night patrolling in the area recently. Efforts were also made to create awareness among the people over the public address systems.”I have asked the the superintendent of police to take necessary steps in the matter,” Purulia District Magistrate Aloke Prasad Roy said.

‘Policing’ on cloud

Technology is fast becoming a major tool to bring transparency in the working of several government departments. There have been several instances wherein the police have been accused of not being transparent while investigating a case, but now with the help of technology they are ensuring that their credibility is not doubted. In order to bring in more transparency, the state Crime Investigation Department (CID)- crime branch, has started a new initiative, one which not only strengthens the police’s conduct and transparency but will also put those people giving statements under scanner. For the past three months, the CID – CB has taken to video recording of statements of witnesses, accused and parties regarding different cases. In just three months since its inception, the CID officers have recorded a whopping 685 statements related to various cases being investigated by the branch.Highly placed officials said, “There have been instances wherein the investigating officers have been accused of tampering with statements of people. We record the statements under section 161 CrPC, but in court, a person can turn them down and claim that the cops tampered with it, thus affecting not only the case but even police’s credibility.”To uphold the state police’s integrity, the CID started video recording of cases. “We came up with the idea and took it ahead. Now all the cases being investigated in the CID are covered in this fashion. We provided smart phones to our officers and taught them how to record the statements on video. The video is so recorded that not just the person giving statements is seen but even the IO so that there is no allegation put on us later that a person gave a certain statement under pressure” said Pankaj Kumar Singh, Additional Director General – Crime. But what happens of the video after the statements are recorded? “As a person finishes his/her statements, immediately the video gets uploaded on the cloud. The service is provided by DoIT who provide security and other facilities for our data as well. No tampering of such a video is possible either at our end or at the other person’s end. Thus it is secure. Moreover, there is an additional feature. As soon as the video is uploaded to cloud, the concerned Superintendent (SP) and the Inspector General (IG) receive a text message which contains details of the case for which the video is uploaded and the name of person whose statements have been recorded amongst other details” the ASG informed. No statement changingAnd what happens when the case goes for trial? “When we file a chargesheet, we will mention that statements are available in video also. If any person changes statements in court, we can anytime produce those videos before the court to corroborate with our reports thus proving that the person was lying in court and not the police. Electronically recorded statements are admissible in court,” Pankaj Kumar Singh said.Contemplating to use it state-wideInterestingly, the department hopes that the newly adopted method would be implemented across the state. “We are studying the development and hoping this would be adopted in investigations in police station level, but we don’t see that happening before December. It will be taken slowly as first only a certain area of the state and certain crimes for example women related crimes would be covered. Then we would move to SC/ST crimes and so on,” an officials said.

When ‘mutton soup’ got in the way of Telangana woman’s perfect crime

A 27-year-old married woman was last week arrested along with her lover for allegedly killing her husband and hiding the crime. The two had devised an elaborate plan to get away with the murder but a bowl of “mutton soup” exposed their crime. Revealing the shocking facts unearthed during the investigations, Police said the woman’s paramour, after the murder, actually set himself on fire to pose as the dead husband. The two had even planned to get a plastic surgery for the lover Rajesh after burning his face. Explaining the sequence of events, a senior police official said, “The woman was married to one Sudhakar Reddy and has two children from the marriage. She was in a relationship with one Rajesh. The two got together and killed Reddy on November 27 and disposed his body in a forested part of Mahabubnagar district.”The murder happened in Nagarkurnool, police said. The woman, M. Swati is nurse at a private hospital in the town. The accused, Rajesh, police said, then poured kerosene on himself suffering burn injuries to his face and upper body.”She lodged a complaint with police stating that a group of four persons attacked her “husband” at their house and poured petrol on his face and other parts of the body and set him on fire. She then shifted him to a hospital in Hyderabad as her husband Reddy,” Nagarkurnool Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent of Police Laxmi Narayana said. However, the officer said, relatives of Reddy told hospital authorities that the man undergoing treatment as Sudhakar Reddy was somebody else. Apparently, the Reddy family grew suspicious after Rajesh refused to eat mutton soup. The hospital served mutton soup to burn victims and when the staff brought a bowl of it to Rajesh, posing as Sudhakar, he refused to have it saying he is vegetarian. The family was shocked as they knew that Reddy was a a non-vegetarian. Their suspecion only grew with the change in his behaviour. When they started asking him some questions including the identity of some relatives, he stopped speaking and instead tried conversing in signs. The family’s suspicion was conveyed to the police which interrogated Swati. The woman readily confessed to the crime and told the police that they had dumped her husban’s body in a forest area. “The woman said that she along with Rajesh had hit Sudhakar Reddy with a sharp edged object on his head and then strangled him to death. They later dumped his body in a forest after setting it on fire,” the officer said. The police officer said that the woman confessed that she got Rajesh admitted in the hospital by passing him as off her husband as the two later planned to live together. The police recovered Reddy’s body in a highly decomposed state from the forest in Mahabubnagar. Both have been booked on charges of murder, he said, adding that Rajesh has not been arrested yet as he is undergoing treatment for his burn injuries.(With PTI inputs)

Thane forest dept needs trained vets

While the leopard that ventured into a preschool in Andheri East on Sunday was rescued successfully by the same evening, the incident has exposed the lack of trained wildlife veterinarians that plagues the Thane forest department. While the leopard entered the preschool’s premises around 7 am, the rescue was completed only around 6.30 pm — after a eopard rescue team from SGNP led by Shailesh Deore, Superintendent Lion and Tiger Safari and Dr Shailesh Pethe, Veterinary Officer, SGNP, reached the site. The reason for the delay was that the Thane territorial team does not have a trained wildlife veterinarian to tranquillise and carry out a rescue operation, thus they had to wait for the SGNP team that was returning from Chalisgaon after being called in for another leopard rescue operation.“What would have happened if the SGNP rescue team was still stuck in Chalisgaon or the leopard escaped from the area which is far from a forest? This incident highlights the pressing need for Thane territorial forest department to strengthen its rescue team as the cases of human-animal conflicts have been increasing in its area and it is evident that the SGNP team cannot do everything single-handedly,” said a wildlife activist.Pawan Sharma, Honorary Wildlife Warden, Thane said, “The number of human-animal conflict cases in Thane’s jurisdiction have been increasing and apart from that the vet could also help in taking care of the animals that are rescued or seized by the anti-poaching team.”Currently, the SGNP leopard rescue team ends up travelling far and wide as it is the only team that has a wildlife vet.

Tihar jail authorities face court heat for not following order

Tihar jail authorities are once again under scanner with a Delhi court issuing a bailable warrant against the jail superintendent of Central Jail 1 for failing to comply with the orders of the court to get an undertrial prisoner treated at a government hospital.Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Pandey issued the warrant after he found that neither the Superintendent appeared in the court nor did he move any exemption. Instead, he submitted a report signed by the Deputy Superintendent of the jail. The court had sought a report on the health of Surender Singh, who had moved an application for issuance of directions to the Superintendent for providing necessary treatment to him as he was suffering from mental problem and piles.“Today, neither the jail superintendent has appeared nor any application for exemption is moved. Even the report has not been forwarded by the concerned Jail Superintendent. Issue bailable warrants against the Jail Superintendent no 1 in the sum of Rs 10,000 with one surety of like amount to be served through the Investigating Officer (IO) for December 11,” the court said.On November 28, the court had called for a report after getting the accused checked up in a government hospital. The court while calling for the report held, “UTP’s generally complain about not providing of proper medical treatment/food in the jail. The court has many times brought the facts of negligence in discharge of official duties to the notice of Worth DG (Prisons) but no noticeable improvement is seen.“Jail Authorities are reminded that they are being public servant, are only caretaker/custodian of the UTP’s on behalf of judiciary. They are supposed to give proper medical care, treatment and food to the inmates. It is seen that despite directions, orders of the court for proper upkeep and providing medical facilities to the inmates are not been complied,” the court said. However, no report was received on the next date of hearing, i.e, November 30 till 3 PM which irked the court. Directions were issued to the Superintendent to appear in person on the next date of hearing. The next date of hearing is December 12.REPORT SOUGHTThe court had sought a report on the health of Surender Singh, who had moved a plea for issuance of directions to the jail for providing him treatment

Hundreds of BJP workers staged a dharna at the Civil Lines police station here, seeking an FIR against District Magistrate Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod, while holding him responsible for the party’s defeat in the just-concluded mayoral polls in Aligarh. While the saffron party had swept the urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh, winning 14 of the 16 mayoral posts on offer, Aligarh was one of the two seats where it lost.Angered by the defeat of their candidate from this “BJP bastion”, the irate workers of the party blamed the district authorities for the names of nearly 90,000 voters allegedly missing from the list and staged the protest last night. Also readUP civic polls 2017: BJP’s Sanyukta Bhatia creates history, becomes Lucknow’s first woman mayor in 100 yearsBJP leader Manav Mahajan said the city unit chief of the party, Vivek Saraswat, had given an application for lodging a report at the Civil Lines police station on November 29 in this connection and also apprised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the state election commissioner of the matter. For nearly five hours, the protesting BJP leaders were involved in a heated exchange with senior district officers at the police station, after Station House Officer Javed Khan expressed his inability to file an FIR against the DM and ADM (city). Also readUP civic poll win a prelude to 2019 Lok Sabha elections: Yogi AdityanathOn December 1, the day the votes polled in the urban local body elections were counted, BJP leaders had demanded a recounting after it became clear that party nominee Rajeev Kumar was going to lose by a margin of over 10,000 votes from Aligarh. The DM, however, had refused to concede to the demand and BSP candidate Mohammed Furqan was declared elected.Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajesh Pandey said there was no provision for filing an FIR against the DM in such matters and added that the complaint of the BJP leaders was forwarded to the district election officer and State Election Commission.

Himanta Biswa Sarma says cancer is ‘divine justice’, Chidamaram blames comment on party switch

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has kicked up a storm with his remarks that some people suffer from life-threatening diseases such as cancer because of sins committed in the past which he called “divine justice”.The comments sparked sharp reactions in the political circles and among cancer patients.”God makes us suffer when we sin. Sometimes we come across young men getting inflicted with cancer or young men meeting with accidents. If you observe the background you will come to know that it’s divine justice. Nothing else. We have to suffer that divine justice,” Sarma said at a function organised for distribution of appointment letters to teachers here yesterday.”In this lifetime or in our previous life, or perhaps my father or mother… perhaps that young man did not do but his father has done something wrong. It is mentioned even in Gita, Bible about the outcome of one’s actions. No point in being sad… all will get the outcome of this life’s actions in this life only. That divine justice always will be there. Nobody can escape the divine justice that will happen,” he said.Attacking Sarma over his comments, former Union Minister P Chidamabaram said ‘that is what switching parties does to a person’.Reacting to Chidamabaram’s comments, Sarma wrote: “Sir, please do not distort. Simply I said that Hinduism believe in karmic law and human sufferings are linked to karmic deficiency of past life. Don’t you belief that too? Of course in your party I do not know whether Hindu philosophy can be discussed at all.”Reacting to the comments, Congress leader Debabratta Saikia today said, “It is unfortunate that the health minister has made such a remark on cancer patients hurting their feelings. As he has made the remark publicly, the minister should also apologise for it publicly.”AIUDF leader Aminul Islam asserted that the health minister made this remark to cover his failure to control the spread of cancer in the state.”He has given up, he can’t control,” he said. Some cancer patients said they were saddened by the health minister’s remarks at a time when it is an established medical fact that there are scientific reasons and various other parameters responsible for the disease.State-run Dr B Barooah Cancer Institute’s Medical Superintendent Dr B B Borthakur sought to downplay Sarma’s remarks.”I don’t think the minister made the remark on scientific basis but in a social context as I understand. I don’t think it is a matter to be made into a controversy. It is not a matter to be given so much importance,” he told PTI.

Chhattisgarh ‘sex CD’ row: CBI to take over probe involving journalist Vinod Verma

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The CBI will soon take over the probe into the Chhattisgarh “sex CD” row allegedly involving a state minister, agency sources said today. The agency, they said, has sought case documents from the state police as it has now received the notification from the Department of Personnel and Training, a prerequisite for the central probe agency before registering a criminal case. The Chhattisgarh government had recently recommended a CBI probe into the case, where senior Journalist Vinod Verma was arrested by the state police sometime back. The BJP-led state government had accused the opposition Congress of hatching a conspiracy.Chhattisgarh Revenue Minister Prem Prakash Pandey had said his party has already stated that the CD was fake and even a local TV channel in its report mentioned that it has been tampered with. The matter seems to be a “political and criminal conspiracy” and, therefore, it was decided that the premier investigation agency should probe it, Pandey had said while announcing the state government’s decision.Pandey had said the recommendation to the CBI for the probe has been made on six points including inter-state conspiracy in making the “fake” CD, a high-level technical examination of the alleged video, funding to make it and political and criminal conspiracy. The alleged sex video had sparked a political row in the state with the Congress and the BJP trading charges over the issue. The matter came to light when Vinod Verma was arrested by the Chhattisgarh Police last month from his Ghaziabad residence for suspected blackmail and extortion related to a “sex CD”.According to the Raipur Police, a case of blackmail and extortion was registered at the Civil Line police station here following a complaint by one Prakash Bajaj who said that he “was being harassed over phone by an unidentified caller who told him that he had a CD of his master”.Raipur Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Shukla had claimed that about 500 “porn” CDs, Rs two lakh in cash, a pen drive, a laptop and a diary were seized from the journalist’s residence, who was picked up at 3.30 AM from Mahagun Mansion Apartments in Indirapuram by the Chhattisgarh police team with the help of the Ghaziabad Police.

More than 150 ambulances were pressed into relief and rescue work that was affected by a huge ball of dust that rose after the 500-MW boiler (power generating unit) exploded. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Lucknow, Balrampur and Allahabad. All burn units in adjoining districts have been put on high alert. About 20 workers with serious burns were shifted to Lucknow.Among the injured are four assistant general manager-rank officials. Three of them, first shifted to a private hospital in Lucknow, were being flown to Delhi. One injured died in Lucknow’s civil hospital where eight had been admitted. Medical Superintendent Ashutosh Dube said all of them had 80 to 90 percent burns and are in critical condition.Eyewitnesses said that the explosion was so powerful that the employees had little chance to save themselves. “I heard a deafening sound and saw fire. We will certainly fix responsibility and initiate action against anyone found guilty,” he said.A 32-member team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has reached the plant to supervise relief and rescue operations. A high-level team of NTPC — India’s biggest power utility — rushed to the site to ascertain the cause of the blast and help the local administration in relief and rescue.Initial reports suggest that the blast occurred due to high pressure in a steam pipe of the boiler, said Rae Bareli sub-divisional magistrate Alok Kumar. Fire engulfed the entire Unit 6 where about 200 workers were on duty. CRPF and police jawans have been deployed at the plant which has been sealed to check any unauthorised entry.Unit 6 was commissioned recently. It was still running on trial. NTPC has ordered an inquiry. “We do not rule out any human error,” said an NTPC official.Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on a three-day tour to Mauritius, asked officials to ensure effective relief and rescue operations, besides best medical facilities to the injured. The state government announced Rs 2 lakh for the families of the dead, Rs 50,000 for those seriously burnt and Rs 25,000 for the injured. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, who have been acquitted in the murders of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, are likely to walk free from the Ghaziabad’s Dasna jail after the prison authorities receive the court order, the jailer said today. The Talwars have been lodged in Dasna jail since November 2013 in connection with the twin murders.”We have not received the court order as yet. We will release them once we get it,” Dasna Jail Superintendent Dadhiram Maurya told reporters. He said there were two methods to complete the process of releasing a prisoner from jail.”Either the Allahabad High Court sends its order copy directly to jail authorities or it is sent through the CBI court concerned which awarded them life sentence,” he said. The Allahabad High Court had yesterday acquitted the Talwars in the case, saying neither the circumstances nor the evidence was enough to hold them guilty. The verdict ends, at least for now, the nine-year ordeal of the Noida couple who were sentenced to life by a Ghaziabad CBI court on November 28, 2013 for the double murders that not only transfixed but also shook the nation with its element of filicide. With the acquittal, the central question in the bizarre mystery resurfaces – who killed the 14-year-old girl and the 45-year-old man.”There is a strong possibility that (the) incident was caused by some outsider,” a bench comprising justices B K Narayana and A K Mishra had said, upholding the Talwars’ appeal against the CBI court verdict.
